Title: Frank Loves Ahearn
Post by: jrod06 on July 01, 2009, 01:02:48 AM
Overheard a convo at the OOD today between frank and I believe a large donor on the phone. To sum up Frank has wanted to play at least one game in Ahearn the past two years but was shut down by weefer and his minions. But since Frank and Mr. Currie are bff's currie is now on board and trying to get this set up.
Frank says he has heard all about all the historic games and homecourt advantage ahearn had and wants to experience the atmoshpere himself!!

Thoughts?   :ksu: :ksu:

Sure I have some thoughts.

To get "Ahearn Magic" means you have to pile about 6,000 people on cramped wooden bleachers that were literally built on steel frames prior to the start of every season around the court.  If you actually got to "sit" down during a game you noticed straight off that you had about half an ass cheek worth of space.  You also have to pile people into the steel balcony that people stomped on during games making more noise.

The Fire Marshall is never, never, never going to allow that now.   So why even bother to waste the money . . . if they were truly serious they'd just raise the money to totally renovate Ahearn and move the men's basketball program over there.   That way Debbie can have Bramlage all to herself.

The next argument will be the dumbass Keitzman point . . . well, they could sell 5,000 tickets at $125 a pop . . . hey that's great, but while 5,000 people in Ahearn with its $hit acoustics will be loud, it won't be anywhere close to what real "Ahearn Magic" was.   So why bother??

On 2nd thought . . . play the game, charge $125 a pop and see what happens.   If they sell all the tickets that they'll likely be allowed to sell, than take that as a clear indicator that plans to renovate Ahearn and move the men's basketball program back there should commence immediately.

Let the Volleyball Program and Women's basketball team have Bramlage.   Build a new indoor track and let that double as an auxiliary practice gym for womens basketball and volleyball when Bramlage is in use for things like Landon Lectures.   Turn Ahearn into a men's basketball only facility.

Wasn't old enough to do the Ahearn thing. I do like the way it looks on the outside though. Makes me think of Hoosiers for some reason. Nonetheless, OOD can be quite fierce itself, we just need to fill it more often to build up that reputation.

there aren't 5K people that will pay $125 a pop. it's a stupid idea pumped by stupid, old-ish ksu'ers who were the same stupid young ksu'ers who complained about ahearn and got us into the OOD in the first place.  the cost to renovate ahearn so that it could handle at least 10-11K (wtih some sort of level of comfort) absolutely has to be more expensive then enhancing the OOD.  Instead of trying to recreate the past, why not figure out ways to enhance the OOD.

Plz put in a good word to Frank to put in an a/c in both the gyms. tia.

And instead of playing an actual game in ahearn they could try and do the madness in manhattan there but the parking garage would have to be finished and they would have to open it up for that.

also I think OB should have the spring game at memorial stadium once would be awesome.

Just want to take credit for this idea (j/k). I did send a lengthy e-mail to Currie a few months ago explaining all of the benefits of playing a "throwback" game on Ahearn. I would be amazing!!!! :woohoo:

Took the words right out of my mouth!

How about a game against a lesser team as well, like Fort Hays?

From a financial standpoint, if we're only going to get 6,000 for this game and 8,000 for a game like XU -- if playing in Ahearn increases ticket sales by at least 10%, it's a positive.  From an AD's perspective it's about getting butts in through the door and charging as much as you can to maximize/optimize income.  If playing in Ahearn does this, then I support it.  If shelling out/investing in OoD is better, let's do that.

I would rather we spread the students section out (not to just the ends) and sold seez tix for sections 19-20-21 and charge $500/$750 per seat (similar to the rates for sec 18).  Also, I would split the seet zones so that rows 1-10 have to pay more than rows 11-on.

For one game?

To complicated. GA whole section. Students spread out.... tards fill in. Students force everyone to stand. Hellious game.

Now, who would be the Mike Man?

this is horrible idea for many reasons, but first off anyone who thinks sell 5k tix for $125 a pop to a lesser opp. and we could have an "atmosphere" of any kind is retarded.  old crusty men that are typical chairbackers would get first chance, buy them up, sit on ass all game mute, bitching about everything.

Seems like it would be pretty expensive to set up bleachers and establish concessions and a ticket facilities (although that pretty much sucks at OOD) for just one game.
Would get a lot of media attention, however.
Someone should find the dusty old EMAW to rehang.

Think of it as a way to up the facilities for multiple sports, one that would also accomodiate VB. Im not a VB guy, but that's how I would pitch it to the AD and boosters. That place is pretty full during Punt the cvnt, and could be used for several events like that if it was rennovated.

LOL . . . good one.

They were so desperate to trump K-State's Ahearn Fieldhouse, and Phog Allen was so pissed off that K-State had the political clout to get the steel to build Ahearn Fieldhouse (in a time when the US was recoving from steel shortages from World War II production and also involved in the Korean War) . . . that they conned the state into calling Allen Fieldhouse a National Guard Armory.

No BS on this from the horses mouth, and since I have spent just as much time this summer in Ahearn as OOD I can vouch that it looks amazing in there. and as far as structurally, I had to walk the catwalk and it was just fine.
On the tickets I have no clue, didnt get to stick around to here nething about that.( had to actually go work  :yuck: )

Being a younger EMAW'er I never got to experience an Ahearn game, so I would like to see what it is all about.

You wouldn't be able to anyway.  Ticket preferencing for a game like that would go to donors first and then be crazy expensive for the rest of us who might be able to get a ticket unless they did it for a no name team, and then what is the point?  And it would not feel like the old days at all.  Part of the old days feeling was the familiarity with the home venue and the caliber of teams that played there and plain old tradition.  One game is not going to bring it back.  If it was one less cat basketball game I got to go see I'd not be happy about it.

Lotta dudes chiming in on this thread that have probably never actually attended a game at Ahearn.  Sounds like something fun to do for one game, so why not?  Seems like there would be a pretty nice buzz going on the week leading up to it.  Also, if they did decide to go throw-back uni for the game, that would give us tons of photoshopping ideas to waste time on for awhile...  Provided they didn't just break out the lavenders again.

I was thinking a garbage title d-1 tournament like the chicks put on with teams like Ark State and Lipscom.  Maybe put one decent team on the opposite end of the bracket for the Bram game.

Would get a lot of media attention, however.

it's a retarded idea, unless this is true.

if they could take a ooc game, get a dece opponent and get it on espn using the ahearn angle, then it would be worth it.

Agree completely.  That or have an AND-1 sponsored Street ball non-con in Rucker Park or something.

I know people who never saw a game in Ahearn want to know what it was like, and people who did see a game there miss what it was like, but let me burst your bubble now — it will never be like that again... we would never be able under todays building and fire codes to have the same setup of fans as we did 30 years ago, it just won't happen. If we ever did have a real game there, everyone would just be disappointed that it didn't match memory or imagination.

Also, there is significant EMAW on the way next week  :peek:

plus they'd have to make their mind up soon ooc games go on sale like end of the month

This sparked an interesting debate over some convo I overhead. Though it would be a massive pain in the ass to set up a one game event in Ahearn, and a nightmare to get another team to agree, I believe it can be done and if FM and ADJC are onboard then I believe it would be worth it.

An to all the ones who say Ahearn is a dump, have you never been to a KSU V-ball game? The crew does a spectacular job in setting up movable bleachers and have a full snack tray. Including fountain drinks. Anyways if I here anymore about this topic I will repost tia.

I've got a better idea.  Move the women's team to Ahearn.  They can have all the "Ahearn magic" to themselves.

Take the retired women's jerseys there too.  They need to GTFO of the OOD.

this would have to be a long term project (10-11 or 11-12 season) no way it happens this year

LOL . . . the real irony here is that K-State wants to build a new basketball practice facility, and the Ahearn Gym right off the Fieldhouse has 3 full sized basketball courts.

Boot everybody else out, renovate the thing, and just hand it over to the men's basketball program.   Move all the Dance and Leisure crap out to the Rec Center, let Estroball and Volleyball have Bramlage . . . knock yourselves out ladies.

The natatorium . . . Wally Judge's private pool house o' fun.

Just to play Devil's Advocate . . . but it was more cost efficent to build a new arena, particularly when they discovered they couldn't build the new arena as originally proposed and abandon a facility that was a basketball classic that was essentially only in need of a few million dollars in renovations??

Makes sense to me. Think of it this way, rather than drive from campus to the OOD, just breeze on over to the bball complex between classes. Sure, the stuni might lose some business, but such a facility, with a b.a. lounge would be awesome!!!!  This would only help recruitment. Kentucky recruits hella good players to a crap hole.

At 1986 prices . . . $17.5 million dollars could have done one hell of a renovation on Ahearn.

People say, "we'll they could have never put any suites or loge boxes in Ahearn" . . . well, go look what they did at the Old Barn at Minnesota and get back to me.

It's water way under the Bridge now . . . which is why I personally feel like any large scale effort to find a way to put 7,000 people in Ahearn, or less, which is all I personally think the Fire Marshall well let them do for some "throw back" game= is a waste of resources unless it's going to generate some serious revenue.   How about they just take the money they're going to spend on something like that, and repaint the court at Bramlage, and to go towards other much more needed things.

Yep.  It's all about the revenue stream.  If cost to make necessary renovations/changes < additional ticket revenues + donations that absolutely will not be given for any other campaign + value of additional publicity, then it's worth doing.
