Title: HBBIQ Discssion Thread
Post by: steve dave on June 26, 2009, 09:29:27 AM
I'll start it off.

1) Is Denis Clemente good or what?  I can't decide.  Obviously great sometimes but his disappearance at times is discouraging.
2) I love it when our team is just bombing 3s.  Gonna be honest, I'm worried about not having a confirmed dead eye 3 bomber on the team.  I like saying "FOR THREE" so obviously this is a pretty big concern for me.
3) Thoughts on the conference?  Gonna be pretty tough imo.

1.  Good, not great.  He's like Larry Reid, if every so often Larry Reid morphed into DJ Augustine.

2.  "Fools gold."

3.  Certainly tough.  Thank god for the warm, fuzzy, security blanket of the Nortards.

I have very high BBIQ, so I will participate.

1.)  Will be better with low post players that can rebound his ridiculous running shots.

2.) Even if we just hit a short jumper, say "For Three!" anyway. Will you get you lots of attention in the stands.

3.) Very tough. Legit teams that can win conference: EMAW, UT, OU and OSU.

Yosh brings up a good point re. the nortards.  Wild guess:  Everyone talks about how great of a job Doc is doing because he manages to "scrap" by with a few wins with his no talent having roster.  Really looks to be a great year for the "big 3" nortards.  Could be the break through win in Lincoln that our team so desperately needs.

Ell guy brings up a good point re. how much I like Denis' runners.  Love those.

(1) Above good, not great.
(2)  I am skeptical about the "we have low post players so now we're going to shoot better from 3" talking point.  I mean, sure, you're probably going to get some better looks, but you still have to be good enough to hit them, and the guys that can do that (Fred and Buchi) are gone.  I don't expect Jake or Denis's 3pt % to jump up all that much this year.
(3)  Conference breaks down like this, imo:  ku, then a battle for 2nd-4th b/t UT, A&M, OSU, battle of 5th -7th b/t MU, OU, KSU, battle for 8th-12th b/t the rest.  KSU could sneak up into the 2nd -4th battle since it has A&M, UT, and OSU at home this year.

UT, A&M, OSU

Yeah, but we get NU/CU/ISU twice each.  I mean, that's 6 wins there barring hilton or doc magic biting us in the ass. Would be terribly disappointing to end our unpresidented first round bye streak while fielding a team this strong.

Better inside game helps guards . . . we will have guys who can finish in the lane.

nother question . . . if Dom Sutton can actually get more shots to start falling (I think the dude has horrible luck shooting myself) how much of a monster will he be . . . and will Big 12 refs finally give this guy a break for god's sake???

1.  http://kenpom.com/team.php?y=2009&team=Kansas%20St.

2.  shooting lots of 3s is more important than hitting a really high %.  seriously.  so, pullen is good at that.

3.  the 2008-2009 big east of the 2009-2010 midwest.

We will definitely finish higher than A&M, and probably OSU because we get the Nortards. We also play both at home so I don't see why we shouldn't finish higher than both.

A&M and OSU played in the south last year (and KSU played in the North) and still managed to finish in a tie with us.  The north, imo, won't be as tardish as normal.  ISU won't be as bad as they were last year.

If there was a Mensa for BB fans, I'd be its president.
1. Needs consistency. Third year in the program, second year as starter should make a big diffence in this regard. But still the fastest player in the league. Would love to have on the bigs have an Ed Nealy type outlet pass.
2. Yeah, best 3-pts shooters left. A concern.
3. Schedule lines up well for us. EMAW year.

imo a big factor this season will be whether or not the freshmen guards can come in and take every single one of c merr's minutes away.  If they struggle and c merr gets Fred Brownish mins. it's going to suck.

1) Clemente = good. Nothing else to say. Dude is legit. Could be better at D but he can drive and dish with the best.

2) I dont think KSU will need to bomb threes this year. With Judge/Kelly/Lou/Samuels, one of them is bound to be good offensively. Thats also some good depth. Three's wont be needed at such a redic rate.

3) ku and UT for 1st. Not going to give it to the Koo. UT will be far better then they were last year although they dont have a whole hell of alot of depth down low. KSU, OSU, A&M, OU, baylor will be fighting for whats left. Pretty typical. But, overall, the level of talent throughout the league will be, on average, higher then its ever been or damn close to it. Should be an awesome year. BigXII = Best conference in NCAA next year.

You know he is good, even when his shot isn't falling he is helping our team in other ways( defense, setting up teammates, punching opponents, egging on opposing crowds.) And yes his runners will lead to some monstrous putbacks by WJ.

2) I love it when our team is just bombing 3s.  Gonna be honest, I'm worried about not having a confirmed dead eye 3 bomber on the team.  I like saying "FOR THREE" so obviously this is a pretty big concern for me.

"FOR THREE"  is truly one of the top shelf showings of EMAW.  I think we will still bomb it at a pretty high rate.  Having guys on the block like Kelly and WJ will free up more open looks from outside.  I miss Fred Brown already.

3) Thoughts on the conference?  Gonna be pretty tough imo.

Yes, it will be tough but no tougher than usual IMHO.  Really, KSU is the additional tough team, and we dont have to play ourselves.   Obviously UT and ku are going to be Final four caliber and I think KSU is the thrid best team on paper.  I think we steal at least one win out of the three games vs those teams.  After that ATM and OU are going to be pretty good, though ou will have quite a fall off without BG.  ATM is going to be solid but if I remember correctly they lost a key guy or two the they expected to have back.  The rest of the Big 12 is  MU will fall off hard and the rest of the nortards will continue to be the downies of the Big 12.  TT will be better but still suck. Baylor and OSU are enigmas and could either be good or suck IMHO.  I think OSU is a better bet to be good than BU.

Also, catzacker your conference predictions are  :jerkoff:

I never have liked Clemente. If he can add a dribble drive kick or the ability to pass to our bigs down low while cutting in to the lane than he will be much improved. He's going to flourish in the up-tempo situations as long as the big men are willing to follow him down the court.

The 3 is going to be a huge question mark. Pullen is going to be the best player on the court. He'll have to step up on the defensive end, though. As long as someone can stretch the defense out so people can't collapse in the lane and clog it we'll be in okay shape. Hell, even a mid-range game can fix this issue.

The conference is going to great. It's going to be one of the best conferences in the country. Easily.

Not at all his problem.  If he could clean up the turnovers he'd be fantastic.  This year I expect him to be better because he has more options in scoring.

Love Clemente when he is on, hate him when he is off.  At the end of the season he did stop shooting if he was cold (Pullen should take note).

Question: Does McGruder have the 3 pt range to become an elite outside threat or is he going to be more of a slasher ala Dom Sutton?

I feel we challenge for the top half of the league.  UT will be tough with the guys that return, Dexter Pittman scares the crap outta me.

Big 12 will be one of the top 2 conferences this year.
