Going to NYC for four days next week for the first time. :ohno:
What should I do besides the obvious (Empire State Building, Ground Zero, Statue of Liberty, etc...)?
Any good places to ?

What are you there for? I am in town for work but have absolutely nothing to do thursday and friday. Flight leaves at 6pm friday and we're flying direct to San Diego (Continental out of Newark).
-
Central Park, play flag football with shirt off. very elite activity that LSOC used to engage in.

Pleasure. The lady and I had enough points on the AMEX to get free flights. Never been there, always wanted to go.

Open games? Friendly players?
Instead of taking off shirt, should I wear my E3 jersey?

Friendlies mostly. Some get pretty serious. I played against JFK Jr. before he went Berringer. He acted like it was the Super Bowl.
Wearing your E3 jersey would be quite stellar.

Goin' to Phantom of the Opera at the Majestic. Tux? Football jersey? T-shirt? Any recommendations?

Went to NYC, was kinda meh.
Went to Toronto a few days later, was
Clean, people are nice, all around awesome. If I wanna go to a trashy city with a-holes, I'll just go to Boston.

Also, the normal sites are kinda meh imo. Like, you've seen the statue of liberty and empire state building and all that crap on TV a million times.

I know, right? That's what I was thinking. The lady wanted to do the whole Ellis Island and Statue of Liberty deal where you get on the boat and tour around it. Meh.
We are gonna go on the Empire State Building, tho. :ohno: :ohno:

Statue of Liberty is probably worth the ride out if you've not been there before, Ellis Island ... not so much. Coolest part of the Empire State Building is the lobby, you might stand in line for quite a while to go up top which is a waste of time IMHO. The museums in NY absolutely kill though, great stuff to see.
-

We already bought our tickets. Should that cut down the time in line? If we go early in the morning when they open (8:00 am), will we have to wait very long?
-
I think early in the morning at the Empire State Building should help your wait. I think the view is worth it, also. I'd pass on the Statue of Liberty. Agree Ellis Island is sort of boring IMO, unless maybe you had a relative come through there.
If you go to Ground Zero, you can do all sorts of other things downtown, like go down to Battery Park and look at the harbor and the Statue of Liberty, then go over to Stone Street and sit outside drinking a beer near Fraunces Tavern where George Washington bid farewell to his troops, then back up to Wall Street and Federal Hall.
You don't need to dress up for the musical, but some of the crowd will be, so you can feel free to do it up.
Also, here are a couple good site for finding restaurants (I recommend sushi):

I'd imagine that early morning would help and it's probably not as bad this time of year as it might be in the summer. The view is pretty amazing but we had to wait like 90 minutes (midafternoon, late summer) which just about drove me nuts.

Metropolitan Museum - A must
Most elite museum ever and it's like on the edge of central park
Also, Tavern on the Green (i think it's called)
Most elite restaurant/bar ever. And it's on the other side of central park

Also, if/when you go to the Met, go up to the roof. They have a sculpture exhibit up there, serve drinks, and you can look out over the park. Sometimes a jazz band is playing, too. Very elite.

GOSP, suggestion for nice romantic type place to take mrs. dave near Time Square? Also, bar suggestions in area for post-meal-drinks? thanks bro!

Ha, didn't think of that. Would be pretty elite to show up in EMAW gear and boo them both. Have to leave friday though.
-
Also:
Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge into Queens. Beautiful walk and then theres an awesome pizza place at the end!
I regret not going up the Empire State building at night....so do that.
There's this really sick ass tavern that's like 200 years old down in the financial district. They say George Washington or somebody used to chill there. Eat there for sure.

Tough request for that neighborhood. Well, if money is no issue (dinner starting at $200 + alcohol), definitely go to Le Bernadin for the dinner of your lives:
Le Bernadin (http://nymag.com/listings/restaurant/le_bernardin/)
Chez Josephine is a big step down in price and much more casual:
Chez Josephine (http://nymag.com/listings/restaurant/chez-josephine/)
In the middle is Esca, Mario Batali's latest place, also well-reviewed:
Esca (http://nymag.com/listings/restaurant/esca/)
Also, if you want cheaper and hip/noisy dinner, you can try Eatery on 53rd and Ninth. I dated a girl who was a bartender there, so I used to go there quite a bit:
Eatery (http://nymag.com/listings/restaurant/eatery/)
There are also tons of other restaurants on Ninth Avenue, from sushi to Mexican, that are pretty good.
And, its nowhere near Time Square, but if you are a foodie, might as well try to get reservations at momofuku ko: momfuku ko (http://www.wired.com/culture/lifestyle/news/2008/07/momofuku)
As for bars, when I'm up in that hood I'm usually going to Irish bars or dive bars on Ninth Avenue, but there are a whole bunch of bars on Ninth also. I don't have any specific suggestions for a romantic place in that hood. If you end up by Columbus Circle (upper 50s), the bar at the Hudson Hotel is very impressive (and expensive): Hudson (http://www.hudsonhotel.com/default.aspx#/explore/?id=hudsonbar)
I would do much better if you asked about downtown or the Upper East Side. :-[

The lady and I are eating on Friday at the restaurant on the Brooklyn Bridge. River Walk Cafe? Is that the name? Thoughts?
River Cafe. Very good choice. Great view of Manhattan -- a friend of mine is getting married in the neighboring park this summer because of the romantic view.
You'll be right between DUMBO and Brooklyn Heights. DUMBO is a bunch of converted factories -- lots of really great artsy stuff to do during the day, but not so much at night. In Brooklyn Heights, there's a very nice promenade along the river, and also lots of beautiful historic houses. Also, some bars and restaurants, mainly on Henry Street and Montague Street.
Have fun guys! I am leaving for vacation myself tomorrow, so don't break the city while I'm gone.

Thanks! One more question. What do you think about getting there from the Theater District? If we take the sub, we'd have to walk about 10-15 minutes from the drop off point. Would it be safe to walk around 11 pm after dinner?
Cab is about 20 bucks each way...

The best train for you is the 2/3 to Clark Street. From there it's a very nice walk through a very nice residential neighborhood, until the last couple of blocks. Those are kind of industrial. It's completely safe, but I don't know what your urban comfort level is.
When you get off the subway, you will be at Clark and Henry. From there, basically you walk west towards the river/Manhattan skyline and turn right. Pretty easy.
The simplest way is to walk 3 1/2 blocks west on Clark from the subway, to the Promenade, where you get an amazing view of the downtown skyline. Turn right and mosey north on the Promenade until it ends, when it turns into a normal street -- Columbia Heights. Keep heading in the same direction along Columbia Heights (about 3 blocks) until you get to Old Fulton Street, where the River Cafe is located directly on your left. Everything up until those last 3 blocks will be absolutely gorgeous.
Also, when you get out of the subway, if you walk north on Henry instead, you will find some pubs and an indie movie theater. If you happen to walk that way to the River Cafe, you should turn left on Cranberry Street after three blocks and follow that west to Columbia Heights. Then, you'll turn right and go about 3 blocks to Old Fulton Street.
It's a total yuppie neighborhood, so I think you'll feel safe.

Ghost of Stan Parrish = elite.
Had a great time in NYC, other than the fact that the lady and I sat on a Delta flight from LGA to MCI for an hour and a half because the pilot didn't have the proper 'paperwork'. But that's for another day.
What a great city. Arrived on Thursday about noon and we walked around town the whole day. Had dinner at Big John's Pizzeria off Bleecker. Not great, not bad. I was expecting more out of NYC pizza. Lunch was at the Carnegie deli. Sandwiches the size of Deon Murphy's head. :lick:
Had beers at the Chelsea Brewery on Thursday night. Great view of the Hudson looking across. Thursday was the only day we saw any celebs. Saw Alicia Silverstone, Donovan McNabb ( :ksu:) , Beyonce, and Michael Strahan.
Did the whole Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island deal on Friday. That was OK. I guess we had to do it if we were there. Walked around the WTC area and had breakfast at Cafe Ferrera in Little Italy. GSP, your advice on the transportation to River Cafe was absolutely top notch. Such a great view of Manhattan at night. River Cafe was great, but awfully expensive :yikes:. Went to the Bubble Lounge in Tribeca after for some drinks. Great bar.
Empire State Building on Saturday morning. Not normally scared of heights, but for some reason I got a little :ku: up there. Shopped and had drinks at Sardi's before going to the Phantom of the Opera. Not a big theater guy, but the show was great. Walked back to the hotel from there. WTF are thousands of people doing walking the streets at 2 am? People of all ages, too. I was amazed.
Did the other sight seeing stuff too on Sunday before leaving. Good times were had by all. Quick, ask me questions so I can answer about NYC since I'm an expert now!!
:kstatriot:

how would you compare the city to manhattan, ks.

Very comparable. Both cities are great.

Oh, and I forgot to add something.
I think I saw Weird Robert there. Dead serious. Walking outside of Radio City Music Hall during the draft and some dude passes us wearing an EMAW hat. The lady turns and asks me if I saw the guy wearing a K-State hat. I turned and looked and I only caught him from the back, but I swear to you it was him. Unless Steve Dave decided to stay an extra day and he looks real ugly :dunno:.

Just got back in the office from my own week-long vacation, and I'm really glad you have a good time in NYC. Damn, I love this city myself. And just to dispel a rumor, although I have to give a foam-finger salute to Weird Robert's sense of style, it wasn't me you saw in midtown...

I saw these guys, too. Wouldn't consider it a highlight, brah.
Oh, how about the pointy TP? Highlight worthy?
Didn't even notice the pointyness of it until you pointed it out (no pun, brah). Most def a highlight.
How was the new Yankees stadium?
Also, plz refer above and comment if that was you. tia.
No, not me. I'm fantastic looking as opposed to smelly looking. Also, flew out the day before. New stadium was really nice. Still very clean so that was huge in sd's book.
