Title: When does Frank Martin implement offensive sets?
Post by: WavetheWheat on December 08, 2008, 09:10:41 AM
I watched your game last night and was left a bit confused.  Clemente and Pullen look to be serviceable players and I actually like Anderson and Samuels.

Is there a reason you didn't run a single set last night?  Clemente/Pullen dribbling until the clock reaches 8 seconds driving to do one of three things...turn it over, make a acrobatic shot, or put something off the iron for Anderson/Samuels to clean up.

My best guess is Frank is teaching these guys how to play defense and then implement a few sets later in the season?

-------

Oh and his f'bombs are classic.  I enjoy watching him give "scary eyes."

It's the Bob Huggins no offense, offense.

Our offense is try to create on your own.

If that doesn't work, get your ass on the boards for second chances and more possestions.

Very reminiscent of the Dana Altman days with Anthony Beane driving the lane, or ski jones firing up a 3 . . . Daryl Cunningham trying to get good rebound position all other guys either watching or trying to rebound offense.

Duke doesn't run offensive sets either. They are our sister school aren't they?

Duke doesn't "run sets", but they do have a structured offense . . . unlike the dribble around and hope for a screen offense of Frank Martin.

You and Dax obviously weren't paying very good attention.  There were tons of offensive sets ran in the half court.  Clemente (and Pullen) got a couple of curls off double screens, and there were a ton of post feeds in the context of a set offense.  I'm guessing 6 of Ron Anderson's shots were a result of the offense getting him the ball on the block, and most of Samuels free throws were a result of the offense, too.  Probably all 10 of Kent's turnovers came from making horrible passes in a set offense.

Personally, I'd like to see fewer offensive sets and more running and/or clearouts for Clemente and Pullen.

In he 2nd half and it was Clemente barrel to the basket, and even Merriweather had to take matters into his own hands . . . which is scary.

Oh, there was the Pullen jack up a 3 play as well . . . which I have dubbed the Selfish F'ing SOB play.

LOL @ thinking Clemente did anything wrong last night, and using a Chris Merriewether drive for a score (in the context of the offense) as an example of poor coaching.

I hate all the people who think high school basketball is the pinnacle of x's and o's and that any successful one-on-one move that isn't made from the block is some sort of selfish play that's the result of poor coaching.  The fact that Chris Merriewether can successfully take his man off the dribble and actually score is a sign of good coaching more than bad IMO.

Where did I say Clemente did anything wrong??

Damn Rusty . . . take a midol.

And yes, the Merriweather drive, break the backboard, ball miraculously goes in offense.  Sounds like a plan.

Disappointing that our defense isn't creating more offense right now.  If we are going to force as many TOs as we do, we need to be getting more points off of them.

And while we have some sets and such, our assist to TOs the last 3 games tell a pretty clear story.  uk; 4 assists, 16 TOs.  Iowa; 5 assists, 16 TOs.  Oregon; 7 assists, 20 TOs.  Total; 16 assists, 52 TOs.  That's pretty horrendous.  You aren't going to win many games with that.  Really pretty amazing that we've kept any of these games close with those numbers, I guess our defense is good enough to keep us in it.  We don't have good enough players to create our own offense that much, we've got to be generating offense in the halfcourt somehow, and obviouly we aren't getting that done.

probably more realistic to acknowledge the reason we've been in the last 3 games despite ourselves is because we've been playing really bad teams.

we are, at the very basic levels, a transition team this year...  martin has no desire to play a half court game with this team.

We need more "high pick and rolls" and some "backdoor cuts" to easy "slam dunk shots".

Our spacing is poor, as is our ball "rotation".  I have seen more one handed bounce passes than I would care to see.

I think Frank should script the first half of each half.

our ball rotation last night was better than it's been imo, they had some nice skip passes over the O-zone.
spacing has been and continues to be a problem for this team, we saw the same issue with Huggs team.  i think this will correct itself as the guys on the floor get used to each other.  problem is that martin likes to go 27 deep with his rotation.

Yeah, this is true.  I think we've pretty much been playing teams at our level; lower tier, maybe middle of the pack, BCS conference teams.
