Washington — The federal government has recommended a site in Kansas for a new $450 million laboratory to study biological threats like anthrax and foot-and-mouth disease, congressional lawmakers and staff said Wednesday.
The lab is expected to generate about 1,500 construction jobs and a permanent payroll of $25 million to $30 million for more than 300 employees once the project is completed by 2015.

Osama now has Manhattan, KS on his radar. :ohno:

All kidding aside, will this affect/effect our airport situation?

This is good news for Manhattan. The economic impact will be huge, not just from the lab itself, but also from the animal health companies that will move into manhattan because of this.

Maybe even more so since the lefties see her as some sort of guru mistakenly believing that she's governor for a reason other than the utter ineptitude of Kansas Republicans. But she's also an idiot and a very weak leader who's not willing to go to bat for anything (see e.g., our President-elect for another example of that sort) for fear that any action will be a negative for her in the future. Congresscritters are less restrained.

“It looks to me as if homeland security has made another in their long series of very, very bad decisions,” said San Antonio business tycoon B.J. “Red” McCombs, who at one point proclaimed publicly that he was virtually certain that San Antonio would get the lab.
“They are not competitive,” he said of the Kansas proposal. “They can't do what we do and they won't do what we do. It would be another homeland security boondoggle.”

He predicted that companies nationally and around the world would want to open subsidiaries here, and forecast that Manhattan's population would double in the next two decades due to this decision.
Also this from earlier in the year...

Sebelius earlier this year signed a bill allowing up to $2 million in subsidies for airline service to the regional airport in Manhattan, a measure designed in part to make Kansas’ proposal on NBAF more attractive.

i still don't get the bitching about the airport thing. the last time i looked, mhk gets like 6-8 flights daily from kc and denver. if ksu wanted to fly athletes in, it doesn't seem like it would really be that hard.

Tall d00ds prolly don't like really tiny planes

It's certainly an odd fit. The first time Beasley came to campus for an official visit, the Washington, D.C., kid hopped a 14-seat plane from Kansas City to Manhattan, but the ride was so bumpy that he asked to be driven back to the K.C. airport. That car trip didn't exactly make him feel better. Interstate 70 between Kansas City and Manhattan offers little in the way of sights. There are signs for Alma's Famous Cheese, others touting the nearby Oz Museum and a University of Kansas billboard with the requisite purple-painted graffiti, but you can practically count the number of buildings on one hand.

-
The NCAA's ban on flying prospects on private planes during official visits is tough on Kansas State. Prospects from the East Coast wishing to visit the campus often must connect flights just to reach Kansas City, then either take a third flight or make a two-hour drive to Manhattan. That affected KSU's pursuit of PF Michael Beasley. He seems intent on playing for coach Bob Huggins and has verbally committed to K-State, but he has pondered other options since his official visit. . . .

yeah, i totally get that it could be way better.
but, for all the bitching about a 2 hr drive through the scenic flint hills - it isn't hard to fly in. and most recruits aren't pussies like beasley (scared of the dark too, iirc). small plane, bfd.

ya dude that airport is huge. not really embarassing if you consider how many different airlines go in and out of the place. no way one security point could cover them all. i guess i don't see the big deal imo. LAX is my favorite airport fwiw...great taxi service, movie stars, great food, easy to get in and out of, overall a :star: :star: :star: :star: :star:

so, like terminal to terminal you need to go through security all over again? ATL doesn't do that, and if you want to argue LAX is bigger than ATL, I will personally travel to KC and beat the sh*t out of you.

Burbank is far superior, they still routinely herd you onto the tarmac before boarding.
And for craptty security lines try San Jose around the holidays. I got into the security line at 5:30 AM and missed a 9 AM flight a few years ago. People intimidated by KCI would just melt down there.

San Jose is a complete joke.

The best airport if you like spotting is HNL, fatty. They have outdoor walkways that are wing level to the jumbos. We departed our Continental 764 and walked by 4 JAL 747-400s sitting so close you could jump on the wing. Kona also deplanes by stairs, which is cool because United stops their OGG-ORD 777 there for cleaning on the way back to the main-land. Not many places you deplane a wide body on stairs.

Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour said last month when the initial recommendation was made that the process was flawed and that his state should have been awarded the project."
