Title: Vacation
Post by: steve dave on August 20, 2008, 09:54:55 AM
Best ocean/warmth vacation destination?  I've only been to Hawaii and S. Padre & Florida (I don't think the last two even count, being in the lower 48).  What are your fav's and rec's?   :dunno:  Mrs. dave putting on the heat for me to make something happen.

Really?

IMO that's kinda dumb.  That's like saying you are afraid of flying cause the plane will crash.

Except I know, like, 10 people that got Norwalk on cruises.  Don't know anyone who died in plane crashes.  :dunno:  My bro had it coming out of both ends for 7 days while couped up in a little room on a smelly ship.  Kinda scary imo.

Yep, go on a cruise or to an all inclusive resort in Mexico of the Caribbean. Both equal plenty of food, alcohol and sun. Mrs. Dave will appreciate the romantic atmosphere, combine that w/ the abundance of alcohol and your sure to have a good time too. You just can't go wrong w/ a tropical location when the cooler weather is beginning to   set in, imo.

Veags is always fun too. It's just not as relaxing as a cruise or a resort. Not, that it can't be, but there is just so much to do there.

7 days? Seems kinda odd since it's only a 48 hour virus!  Mom got it on a 30 day cruise, 48 hour quarantine.  Then she was fine.

Of course you know I mean the small % chance of it happening. I know lots of people that have never gotten the virus, nor have died in a plane crash.  Your chances of dying in a car are much higher than getting a non-fatal virus.

We just got back from Puerto Vallarta, we stayed north of there in Sayulita for 3 days at a really small resort called Playa Escondita. Amazing.

Don't do all inclusive, you will miss all the local food and culture holed up in some big resort.

For a first time cruise i'd go Carnival.  It is the least expensive and offers the widest variety of entertainment and dining options.  You won't get the "class" associated with the more expensive lines, and the food isn't quite as good, but it is still good, and there is always something to do on the boat.   :eyeseeyou:

Honestly at this point it's all about Carnival.  The "class" lines have less to do for people under 50.  People party and get drunk on Carnival ships, on all other lines (cept maybe Royal Caribbean) people go to bed at 9pm.  I'd choose Carnival, and after that Royal Caribbean.  Beyond that it gets a bit too rich for my blood.  Grand Princess, Norwegian, Holland America, and Celebrity are other major lines.

The killer is airfare.  You can get a 5 day cruise cheaper than the price of the plane tickets at this point.

Just don't go to a fracking resort where you are going to sit by the pool for a week.  Rather than spend 3 grand, you may as well climb the fence at Chase Manhattan and do it for free.  If you're going to take the trouble of getting a passport, going through customs and spending a few thousand, experience something. You'd be amazed at what else is out there for the same price as a week at a Beaches resort.

 Two Cents

You can do that crap on cruises too.  It's cool not to have to worry about where you are going, how you are going to get there, and just relax and people bring you crap in between excursions.

Food is free, with very few exceptions.  They have pastry bar/coffee bar things that sometimes charge for stuff.  They also have upscale restaurants on some ships that you pay a cover charge.  However all other food is included.  You generally have an assigned dining time where you sit down for dinner and order from a waiter, always have choices. If you don't like it you can choose something else, or just have 1 of each and then eat 3 desserts.  If you don't want to dine at an assigned time you can do the buffet - not as good but not bad either.  On the ships i've been on ice cream, pizza, and room service with the usual american food is available 24/7.  Sometimes they will do late night buffets too.

Drinks, they charge you.  Generally they give you big portions, I generally had a 16 oz pina colada in hand and they are about 5-6 bucks. They automatically add gratuity to them.  Soda is expensive, but you can bring your own on the ship if you wish.  Alcohol, you can't with the exception of a bottle of wine per person.

I like the cold too but sometimes, like in the middle of march or feb when there is a crap ton of snow on the ground and every day sucks worst than the next day, it's nice to escape to 80 degree weather with the cool ocean air blowing across your face.

I think I'm the poorest person on this board.  Sometimes in the winter I put my space heater underneath my blanket and pretend I'm at the beach.  Not for long though cause I might start a fire.

Cruises are for old people but traipsing around some pissant village and getting your dome caved with a baseball bat is also no good.  It is generally a bad year to travel because the dollar sucks.  I was just in antigua and thought it was pretty sweet until the place down the road from where we stayed was the scene of a pretty nasty double torture/murder.  Spent last week at the W in san diego and it was awesome and no one broke into my bungalow to beat me to death for my fracking digital camera.

Go to the keys or san diego.  Will be just as nice and you won't feel compelled to "experience the culture" by touring the ghetto.

seriously, what about a trip up to the little big horn river in montana, or yellowstone and do some hiking/camping, or as was suggested, head up to vail/aspen area, or lake placid, or spain.  i'm starting to think the whole bahamas thing might be played out.

Cruise ships drop you off in the crappiest beyone crappiest part of Jamaica. Just an FYI and another reason for SD not to cruise.

Yeah, will be in San Diego next year for work and the Mrs. and I are extending it for a week.  Maybe I'll just blow that one out of the water and she will call it acceptable.  Broads...am I right?

Take her across the border for a Donkey show and some blow while you are there.

The place where they drop you off is crappy. Dirty crappy hip strip with crappy beyond crappy stores and 1001 locals all trying to sell you something crappy. Not very relaxing and not a place to vacation in imo.

Ports are generally crappy - gotta take a cab, or have a planned excursion to get anywhere neat.

yeah-I was kind of guessing that about the port thing. I guess if you know this in advance and try to plan ahead maybe you can make out ok. They are actually in the process of building a third port in Jamaica in a town over by Negril (Lucea, I think). This town is even crappier than the other two but only about twenty minutes to negril

Kauai - expensive but has a ton of great hiking, surfing, diving options.  Much more secluded, better active/outdoor options and less crowded than the other Hawaiian islands.

Keys - much less expensive and easy to travel to but not as exotic.  Fly to Ft. Lauderdale...take the drive down Hwy 1, stay on one of the keys along the way...end up in Key West and rent a small house/conch shack...good restaurants and culture if you stay away from Duval St. and the Jimmybuffettnerdalertblacksockssandalshereisafivedollartshirtandbeerspecial type places.  Snorkeling is cheap and awesome...as is plenty of other stuff.

If you want to go somewhere truly exotic, use your money to dump the Bahamas/Jamaica type places and take a shot at Thailand.  Not a huge difference in price and you actually get to see a new spot/experience culture other than what the resorts will shove down your throat.

You can book your excursions online months ahead of time, or book them on the boat.  Then a bus or whatnot picks you up and takes you to where you need to go.  Ports in general don't have much except what you mentioned.

start a new trend, go somewhere cold and crappy.  get the ice road truckers to take you there.  don't come back.  tia.

I concur.  For the last three years straight I've gone ice fishing in the middle of Minnesota over Martin Luther King weekend.  (No better way to celebrate the King.)   :eyeseeyou:  It's usually about 30 below when we step out onto the ice and we always question it until we get into the huts and start boozin'.

Failing that, I recommend a cruise as well.

Good choice on the zoo.  Don't waste your time going up to the elephant/rhino area.  It's uphill at the back and is GMAFB boring.  I can sit and watch those g'damned gorillas for hours so plan a lot of time for them.  Don't miss the nocturnal area under the desert dome (some people don't know it's there).  I would rec. eating at Upstream Brewery downtown.  It is my fav. place in the world.  It's only about 5-10 minute drive from the zoo and reasonably priced for drinks and food.  There's nothing right by the zoo because it's in a s#!tty hood like Rusty's house.

I'd bring a tranq or net gun.  Good for animals and no-gooders.  If one of those gorillas gets out (not-racist) it could tear your arms off and beat mrs. saul with them.  Tell her to try to grab them while they are being swung so you can reattach.

Nocturnal area = BAD IDEA. I hate being in enclosed spaces with lots of 'tards with large strollers for their 9 year old kids - especially in dark areas. I had to rush through it before I had a panic attack.  Really didn't care for the Zoo overall, I guess i'm not a big zoo person.  I did CHOW DOWN at "King Kong", LOL!  Took a king kong sized crap when I got home too.

Did a 10 day cruise through the panama canal last january I would recommend. It stopped every day in a new country so we weren't trapped in the floating hotel. I liked Quepos Costa Rica, Aruba, the best. I have heard that Panama City Panama is like the cooler younger version of Miami. the wife and I decided that the 10 day event was a good taste of places to go back and explore more later. It started in Acapulco and ended in Puerto Rico. Went to Cartagena, and it is up and coming but when your tour guide keeps telling you how safe you are, it is a little unnerving and I am pretty fearless when it comes to travel. That's the only drawback to the cruises is everything needs a tour guide. If your not too adventurous Aruba is gorgeous and pretty safe, but I preferred Costa Rica

Reminded me too much of the South.  A bunch of lazy black guys with no jobs sitting around doing nothing.  The best part was after we went on the Ocho Rios river and were walking back to the bus, a bunch of Jamaicans started screaming at us that we were going the wrong way and started pointing us this other way.  So here we were, all these half-naked white people (we were in our swimming suits) and we're forced to walk through this circuitous shanty town the Jamaicans had set up so they can scream at us the whole time to buy their stuff.  It was like the Bataan Death March or slavery in reverse or something.

Never really liked them after that.

Except I know, like, 10 people that got Norwalk on cruises.  Don't know anyone who died in plane crashes.  :dunno:  My bro had it coming out of both ends for 7 days while couped up in a little room on a smelly ship.  Kinda scary imo.

cruises are gay, seriously.  who would even consider this crap?  i'd rather head down baha california in a dune buggy or chill on the beach in st. barts.  vacations in general are a huge waste of money imo though, so idk

LOL.

Steve is being a pussy for thinking he's going to get sick on a cruise.

clam's thinks going on a cruise is gay.

Since I have been on a few, I have neither gotten sick, known anyone who has, nor have I seen a plane full of people crash, and have never seen anyone or myself turn gay,  I think it's a matter of people being overly cautious and have low self-esteem.

so, if Mrs. Dave is reading this, kick Mr. Dave in the nads, and make him take you.   He'll feel extremely silly for putting up such a fuss.

You're never going to ever get laid if you don't learn to explore the world.

And it doesn't involve any "gayness".

you consider "getting out and exploring the world" sitting on the deck of a cruise ship getting hauled around from tourist trap port to tourist trap port.

Who said cruising is "exploring the world"?  I don't really consider it exploring the world, especially when there is very little difference between the ports, and the USA.

I'm going to Japan in 2010 to visit a bud in the Navy.  Plane tickets for my wife and I will total nearly $3,000. That will buy a nice cruise.  :flush:  But instead, we will "explore the world", still should be fun.

It is amazing how silly you people are about vacations.

Going on a cruise can be exploring the world because you'll go to places you never been.  While a lot of them are tourist traps, so can pretty much any city and other place in the United States.   Of course, if you're not smart to start with, then you deserve what you get.   :flush:

Until you experience the available packages, you shouldn't comment on the entire cruise industry.   I've been on several and have visited places over the world that I might not have gone to.   Many packages allow you to make excursions past the Welcome Americans and your Money ports, you just have to see what's available.

And while they can be expensive, they are not boring or even gay (unless you go on the ones that pissclams does) and you'll be surprised at what you can do.

So be an adventurer and stop listening to the unambitious tards that frequent these boards.

Adventurer and Cruises don't belong in the same sentence. It's kind of like saying "stop being a picky eater and go try something crazy like bread".

We are going to visit some Mayan ruins and raft on "dunns river falls" on our next cruise, fwiw.  I realize that isn't eating giraffe testicles with the natives of Lesotho, or visiting a Chinese whorehouse, but it's still pretty adventurous for a dude who has lived in Topeka, KS for his entire livelihood.
