J/W, what is your favorite example of Frank's genius X's and O's?
Mine has to be "the play" he called vs ku when we led 55-45. You can see him calm down the offense and call a play. Pullen drives, attracts 3 hawks and he dishes it off to beasley for the slam. You can see Pullen then look at Frank, while Frank points back at J-Pul kind of like, "Yeah, that was my play call. You are nothing w/o my genius"
It was pretty sweet. Just incredible how frank undressed Self that night.

That was one of Wyatt's better calls.
-
Just goes to show that one or two good players with an exceptional coach can utterly destroy one of the deepest and most talented group of players ever assembled when they are hobbled by a bad coach.
-
Got pretty loud right after that.

hi bbiq crowd
-
man that game was sweet, I've got the ticket in a frame along with my parking ticket I received for parking in the grass. Which is right next to my Beasley & Walker signed basketball!!
-
It would help your case if there were more frame captures from 10:12 to 10:02.
-
Remember every game where he played mike only on offense a for a few minutes because of foul trouble? Genius!
-
The entire USC game. The way plays and feeds were set for non marque players. Examples are the feed from Pullen to Anderson or the Feed from Beasley to Kent.

If Bill Self is a bad coach, who qualifies as a good coach?

Unfortunately first name that comes to mind is Huggins, then Knight, Howland, Donavan.

Not trying to hijack this thread... but the notion that Bill Self is a bad coach is completely ridiculous. Especially considering the guy just won a National Championship. He's one of the best coaches in the country, hands down.

I disagree I think any of the other coaches mentioned given the same talent year in and out through his career would have been in the final 4 at least 3 times. He's not horrible, but his success is based more on the talent around him than his ability to coach and game scheme.

Bill Self is the Mack Brown of basketball.

Mack Brown is one hell of a coach...just so you're aware of what you're saying. See Big 12 coach smell thread for more insight.

Whether it's Mack Brown, Bill Self, Dean Smith, or anyone else, I always find it amusing when someone is accused of only winning because of the talent they recruited on campus.
I thought that was part of the job description.

Mack Brown is mocked not because he only wins because of the talent around him, but because if he knew how to use/develop talent he wouldn't have his team's national title hopes dashed by The Bold And Daring 2* brigade. If Self were good enough to coach a team chalked full of high school Americans he might not lose to a high school coach coaching one all American and a bunch of other freshman.

It is. If x's and o's were the only factor Ronald Prince would prolly be undefeated. Unfortunately HE thinks that's the only factor....so we're not. :blank:

Give yourselves a little more credit there. After the butt kicking we got in Manhappenin, I didn't think you guys would lose until our matchup in Larrytown... That being said, I thought your season was a major underachievement given the potential you displayed in Manhattan and the amount of talent on your squad

LOL. What further did you expect out of the 07-08 cats? We bitched ku at home. We finished 3rd (behind two ultra-talented, veteran teams) and won a game in the NCAA vs a top 6 seed (something that took Self 4 years to accomplish @ ku)
Yeah, we sure were loaded. A whooping 3 RSCI guys, all of which were freshmen.

Do you understand how b-ball works? It is hard to play up to your potential every night when "your potential" is two NBA players, Clent Stewart, White Tiger, Ron Anderson and some shoe strings.

Well is that not where coaching comes in? Getting the most out a decent crop of kids. I see you fail to mention 4* Sutton, 3* Pullen, and the defensive specialist 3* Andre Gilbert...

He had no talent to work with (moral of the thread). I would like to see what Self's best season has ever been with 3 RSCI guys (don't even have to be freshmen for this experiment even though that's what Frank had to deal with). Could be good, I don't know, but you have to respect the crap out of what Frank did with 2 good players and a pile of s##t.
-
Texas had 6 RSCI (2 frosh), ku had 10 (1 frosh). Of course, clown ku fan expected us to finish above those two teams.
Frank had 3, all freshmen and utterly destroyed ku. The guy is an X's and O's genius.
-

d00ds, EVEN ku d00ds...you really can't question this given the facts presented above

And if Dom was our 3rd RSCI guy remember that he only played half a season.

Yeah, we're GIVING them that. Pretty much Frank + Bill + Mike destroyed ku.....redic. now that trips lays it down like that

Fair points. but no one really expects you to finish above ku and UT. But you finishing third in the standings really doesn't tell the tale of how well you performed after you owned ku at home. didn't you guys drop six of your last eleven conference games and screw the pooch in the Big 12 tourney pretty. sure dom was around by then.
Not meaning to fame, just saying it's funny to hear a team talk about having NO talent, and brag about the #1 recruiting class in the country.
-
the big 12 tournament appearance was a bit disappointing. I don't care how we did in a certain part of the season, I care about the season as a whole. Any team looks bad if you pick out a certain piece.
We didn't end badly as we did fine in the NCAA tournament. An example of ending a season Hadley is the 2004-2005 Jayhawks, coached by Bill Self. A team with much more talent than the 07-08 cats.
-
fats, that was a fresh look on a real special moment. thanks.

Question for you.... are you an 11-15 Hawk, or an 8-18 Hawk? 1972 was a pretty pathetic year for ku, whether it was 71-72 or 72-73.

I know you guys are new to this whole basketball thing, but the stupidity in this thread is overwhelming.
You try to use one game to prove that Self is a "bad coach". Since this is probably the second year most of you followed basketball (kusucks I'm looking at you), I'll let you in on a secret: talented teams lose games. Flukes happen. This is basketball, not football. ku had less losses than any championship team in 10 years. Was ku the most talented team of the last 10 years? No. Roy Williams had several teams at ku with as much talent or more talent than last years team.
Recruiting is part of coaching. Bill Self is easily a top 5 college basketball coach, and will leave ku with several more titles.
When the biggest win in the last 20 years of your team's history is a home win over your rival, you know your program is in shambles. I can understand the interest in hoops now that Prince has run your football team into the ground, but try learning a little bit about the sport before you open your mouth next time.
-
Flukes happen.
Like, last year starting in September?

I'm going to let you in on a secret. I'm you real father. Also, There were 2 games you should be ashamed of(according to your standards.) OSU is the other one. But I wasn't just speaking about those games. Think back throughout the Self years. Oral Roberts last year. Bradley and Bucknell, Georgia Tech and UCLA in Elite 8 appearances. Self has had more shots with supperior talent than it took to get to a final four. My point stands. Peace.

Actually I don't think Frank does to much xs and o'n he doesn't have to when he gets the Jimmy's and Joe's
He's going to have to do some x's and o's coaching next year with a lineup of:
PG: Pullen
SG: Awaji
SF: Sutton
PF: Kent
C: Anderson
Bench: Clemente, Brown, Herrera, Samuels, etc.
That team might not be that bad, but he'll have to get the most out of them to reach the NCAA tournament.

Agreed, Frank should be coach of the year if we make the tourney. If ku were to not make it after coming off the tourney win Self should be fired. Just my two cents.
-
K-State is still the 2nd-best team in the North next year. ku will be a bit down next year as well. If K-State manages to take care of business at home, you guys will have a good shot at the tourney. Should be interesting to see how guys like Pullen, Clemente, Samuels, Sutton, and Anderson develop.
-
K-State is still the 2nd-best team in the North next year... I obviously like what ku still has with Colins and Aldrich and what we're bringing in next year. If K-State manages to take care of business at home and post a winning record against the Iowa State's of the world, you guys will have a good shot at the tourney. Should be interesting to see how guys like Pullen, Clemente, Samuels, Sutton, and Anderson develop.
I talked to a ku grad the other day at the Blue Moose in KC and asked him how ku was going to be in hoops next year and his response was, "Awesome!" I kinda looked at him for a second and was all, "Oh yeah? Even after losing all that talent?" and he was all, "Yep, should win the Big 12 pretty easy!" and I was all, "OK". Do all ku fans think you guys are going to be really good this season? Seems kinda like a long shot with all the starters gone even with the decent 'cruitin class. I mean, look at Florida this season. Similar situation imo.
-
ku won't be as bad as Florida was last season... if the Morris twins qualify, I think ku could be an Elite Eight team.

See, that's what I'm hearing....just don't see it I guess
-

That's because it's silly.
-
There's a difference between expecting ku to make the Elite Eight and saying their capable of making the Elite Eight. I have relatively low expectations and will be happy if they get past the first couple rounds of the tourney. Anything beyond that is gravy. College basketball could be a bit down next year, especially the Big 12. ku has the potential to be pretty good by the time March rolls around, IMO.
-
especially the Big 12
OU has to be feeling pretty good going into the season. The nortards could be even weaker than usual.
-
I see ku being about as good as K-State was last year. They will have some moments, but they won't be any real threat to do anything. The one thing they will have going for them, is that there is no ku 2008 in the conference.
-

no but i still see OU winning the conference. ku and Texas at 2nd and 3rd. A&M and Us Fighting for 4th and 5th. and Nebraska and Baylor to be the 2 Conference's Dark Horses. The rest of the conference will most likely be LOL able

the next time bill self does anything of signifigance without cheating/probation/sleazy recruiting/thugs will be the first time. good for him though.
