Vote as much as you want folks, let's have a good old fashioned deli meat popularity contest. Battle of the meats. This poll will be up for 14 days and I want you to be as honest as possible when responding. Please don't make up false answers or try to rig the poll, those who violate the rule will be banned from the site for 2 years.
Thanks and here's to wishing you and yours happy sandwiching as we enter Sandwich Appreciation Month. ;)

Turkey is by far the best deli meat. Of the turkey options cracked pepper is my fav. :lick:

same here! but sd, don't sleep on oven roasted gold chicken breast. tried it for the first time a couple weeks back and it was delish! <-not word.
they also have a pastrami coated turkey breast at the store i live near, hmmm? was ok.
-
Will try oven roasted next time, thanks for clue into deliciousness.
-
as a former employee of a sandwich shop i consider myself to have an extensive history with deli meats.
oven roasted chicken is by far the best white meat. however if the roast beef is high quality it is tough to beat. then again you left out corned beef, and pastrami. it all depends on the use of the meat though. i would say overall, the ORC is the tops. plus it can be healthy. :cyclist:
-
cappicola
-
If you created a "most delicious food in general" thread I would say black forest ham. This is a no brainer people.
-
cappicola
good mixed with other meat such as a turkey. can't imagine eating a sandwich with just this meat.

the answer is Mr. Goodcents.
-
yes! goodcents is good!
i get boar's head meat which i was always told is one of the better quality deli meats, it's what the market near me sells.

Obv. error in not telling the disgustingest. :ohno:
-
Do Pepperoni and Salami count as deli meats? If so I will go with the combo as my favorite meat/meats. TIA.

it was an italian with everything on it. everything. every sauce that we had. on top of a whole one of those the dude would eat a half chicken parm and 2 cookies. and a large dp to top it all off. this was his lunch, and he would eat it about 2 times a week. also, the dude never wore a shirt whenever i delivered it to him. he was a large fella.

sorry RD, i edited the poll to include those guys.

I just got done with a 3 month stint at the deli at the new Topeka Hy-Vee. 3rd generation delicatessen in my family.
Anyways, cappicola works w/ prosciutto, genoa salami, and provolone cheese...excellent sandwich.
I love cappicola but for an every day deli meat I like italian style roast beef, sun dried tomato turkey, cajun turkey, or extra rare roast beef.
-
Party Time Ham :lick:
Pfanastiel meats are kind of nasty. They were the only meats we had that had MSG in them. They also tasted very plain and meh.

how come that's so hard to find? i love it. also SBG- your opinion of boars head meat?

Boar's head is good, it's the Dillons version of Hy-Vee's "Dilusso". You can tell if it's good stuff if you get the grainy texture to it, and not the pressed, gelatin like consistency of the generic brands or willowbrook farms. BH and Dilusso are both "all muscle" meats, which that they don't add gluten and artificial flavors or preservatives. But yeah, always get the premium meats..they kick the others ass so much.

boars head isn't a dillons owned brand if that's what you're meaning, it's its own company but thanks for the other meat data.

corned beef and pastrami, FTW!

I believe Boars Head is Kroger exclusive, though. DiLusso is HyVee exclusive, but it is a division of HORMEL foods. That's what I meant.
-
i buy boars head at hen house, they're not owned by krogers. i dunno. picked up a pound of over roasted chicken tonight.

Ah..well, perhaps i'm mistaken. In Topeka all we have is Wal-Mart, Dillons (Kroger) and Hy-Vee. Give DiLusso a try from Hy-Vee.

hy-vee :flush:

Heard the Hy-Vee's in KCMO aren't that great.

hy-vee's everywhere are great.

I was like  at whole foods, wish we had one.
Oh to answer your question about extra rare roast beef, Sara Lee makes it as does DiLusso. Don't know about Boar's Head. Also, what they have in the case at any grocery store is not the only thing they have. Ask if they have what you want, usually they do.
-
Oh and your "JMO" about ORCB, that stuff is so plain and kinda boring. :shy:
-
do you have to ask for "extra rare roast beef" ? yesterday at the deli case i was eyeballing their roast beefs checking for rarity. wasn't sure if it's a style or if sometimes it just comes rarer then other times.
i grabbed the ORCB last night because i had stage fright and wasn't sure about how to order the extra rare :runaway:
-
Whole Foods is like what heaven's grocery stores are all like. I just walk around and tell myself that this is the only place I will ever shop when I get really, really rich. I'm always all :lick: but then :runaway: when I see the prices.

Just ask for the reddest roast beef they have. If it's not in the case ask to see it.

How much ORCB you get? 1 lb? half? How about cheeses?
-
yeah, 1 lb of ORCB + 1/2 lb of colby jack.
saul. how long does the cheese they slice you at the deli last?
-

saul. how long does the cheese they slice you at the deli last?
dunno. I usually keep mine until it gets the hard "rind" on it. Colby jack seems to keep well. Cheddar keeps the worst. Any cheese that is smoked keeps well too (provolone).
If you are concerned you won't eat it quickly ask them to slice it fresh.
-
Deli cheese is so much better than packaged cheese  :lick:

they always slice both the cheese and the meat fresh. none of this pre-sliced crap. i was just wondering because the sell-by date on the sticker is always like the day they slice it. but i think cheese lasts a while.
Deli cheese is so much better than packaged cheese  :lick:
qft'd. my gf was jealous, guess she never had it before.
wtf is this cheese dude? :cheesy:

Pre-sliced isn't bad if it moves well. If it doesn't, then it's not as good.

OH GOD!!! 5 DAYS!!! I CAN'T WAIT!!
GO SMOKED TURKEY!!!
-
Some deli meat doesn't even look like it was cut but reformed like some ham in a can.
I hate that.
Grocery stores don't make great fresh bread either.
The tomatoes aren't like backyard grown. Picked when green and then gassed.

FYI but most if not all bread that is sold in grocery stores (even in the bakery) is frozen and shipped in, and then thawed and sold.
Yes, alot of deli meat is formed like some sort of ham in a can. The good stuff isn't though. You can especially tell with roast beef, if it has marbling of fat its the good stuff, if not it is crap. Turky and chicken, if it's slimy its crap.
Can't help you with the produce bro. Try to get the stuff locally grown (farmers markets).
-
about the bread saul- they have a big bread oven at the store, are you saying they're buying frozen dough and dethawing it then cooking it?

Either that or they just get the bread pre-made already. They generally only make cakes from scratch.
-
I voted for black forest ham, but my real passion is for Fanenstiel (sp?) ham. They don't typically have it ready behind the deli counter. I go get one from the meat isle then take to the deli counter and have them slice it up.
The ham is very much like black forest, only about buhgillion times better. Think of it like a naked, coked-up midget riding a jetski across your taste buds.

I hate you. The deli doesn't make any money off that and it's just a huge waste of our time and a PITA. Of course I don't work there anymore but it still angers me. Anyways they usually always have the fanistiel party time ham. Not sure why anyone would eat that crap though, it's full of weird things. Plus the fanistiel line is the only line w/ MSG. ;)

it's not premade, the bread oven is sitting right there behind the counter and they're cranking it out hot. they do it at most of the hen house markets in kc.

I like most meats better when they are heated. It's like, pepperoni and salami alone are pretty good but pepperoni and salami heated in the sandwich steamer at rockabelly and served to me is
-
i'd rather go 2 girls 1 cup than eat heated deli meats. :flush:
-
Rock-A-Belly only place I trust to warm my meat.
There is a reason they are called cold cuts. Rock-A-Belly soothes my worries with Old Style and hummus.
