Title: question to resident "nutritioninst"
Post by: fatty fat fat on June 22, 2008, 07:49:26 PM
Wouldn't like, 15 apples worth 500 calories have the same effect as 3 tacos (from t-bell) worth 500 calories? (weight/gain/loss)

I mean, isn't calories all that really matters? It's just basic energy laws, no?

Correct (sd is non nutritionist).  Weight gain/loss comes down to calories taken in vs. calories expended.  The only thing that can alter this is the fact that some calories are not fully absorbed because of fiber content.  The apples will have a lot more fiber and they will cause some of the calories to not be absorbed into your system.

True.

But it is easier to throw down 3 tacos than 15 apples in one sitting.

calories not all that matters really, gotta figure out where the calories come from: protein, fat or carbohydrates.  300 Calories from a nutty bar is worst for you than 300 calories from spinach cause spinach contains complex carbs, and proteins that will make you full longer.

This is pretty good advice.  Calories are overrated.  It's more about where the calories come from and what's(nutrients) in them.  A taco is basically empty carbs, some saturated fat, sodium and some protein; it's a dead food.  An apple is a nutritionally dense live food though it doesn't have any protein.  It will fill you up and suppress your appy.

Nutrients found in Apple*:
Fiber
Ellagic acid
Bioflavonoids
Pectin
Chlorogenic acid
Caffeic acid
Malic acid
Potassium
Alpha-carotene
Vitamin C
Sulfur
Phosphorus
Magnesium
Iron
Tannins

Notes about Apple*:
Important nutrients are found in the apple skin.
Apples can help suppress the appetite. Apples are antibacterial, antiviral and anti-inflammatory.
Apple is a detoxifying fruit.

This is BS.  The question was in regards to weight gain/loss only.  When you start throwing in other nutritional factors of course the crapty tasting thing is going to be better for you.  But, weight gain and loss comes down to calories taken in v. calories burned exclusively.  Of course the apple is going to make you feel better and want to burn more calories but that is irrelevant to the question.

I don't think it's really irrelevant.  Try eating 1800 calories a day of only twinkies and see what happens to your body.

As long as you are burning the same calories you will not gain weight.  Now, your teeth may fall out, you may not want to do as much exercise (hence causing weight gain), you will get scurvy, you will feel crapty all the time...but your weight will be the same all things being equal.

Horsesh1t.

I eat an apple and it doesn't do sh1t. It doesn't suppress any appetite. I eat a taco? You actually feel like you ate something.

assholes.

I think Saulbadguy (ksufans.com poster) is mixing up health and weight gain/loss. JMO.

At a general level, calories are equivalent.  Calories are a measure of heat when the food is completely burned in lab.  The body does not process all foods equally.  Cells prefer to burn glucose (sugar) & carbohydrates first, and will store fats for use later (if glucose levels are sufficient).  Apples are higher in sugars and will tend to be used as an immediate energy source.  Tacos, being higher in fats, will tend to be stored as fat.  Foods also have different tendencies to change blood sugar levels (glycemic index) which affects whether they will be burned or stored.

But as long as your caloric intake of any type of food is less than your caloric expendature, no problem.  Difference between sources of calories is not great enough to worry about for most people.  It's the fouth taco that is the problem.

Quote
Young et al. compared 3 isoenergetic (1,800 kcal/day) and isoprotein (115 g/day) diets differing in carbohydrate content (30, 60, and 104 g/day) [22]. After 9 weeks on the 30-g, 60-g, and 104-g carbohydrate diets, weight loss was 16.2, 12.8, and 11.9 kilograms and fat accounted for 95%, 84%, and 75% of the weight loss, respectively.

[22] http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/5548734?dopt=Abstract&holding=f1000,f1000m,isrctn

That's pretty dated though, anyone have any more recent references to similar isocaloric studies?

You all seem to forget that eating 15 apples, instead of 3 tacos, could very well result in rapid weight loss. If you've ever eaten more that a couple of apples at a sitting, you'll know of what I speak:

Your weight will be the same after X amount of days/months no matter what you as long as the calories are the same. Your percent bodyfat is whole 'nother ballgame.
