streak breaking regular season win over ku
or
tourney nationally televised 11 seed over 6 seed win over usc
jw
-
Good question. The tourney appearance and win got us some extended publicity that will be good for the program. Breaking that streak was bigger for the fans IMO.
-
They were both big, but I'd say ku. It was the older streak and had to end.
-
USC, first win in tourn. since when? '88? Pretty huge imo.
-
usc, don't be tards.
-
USC, and not even close.
A kid in D.C. could give a rats rump about a streak. They want to know that the program and coach are making the tournament. Then, that elite talent goes to the next level.
-
USC. Got us way more exposure and a NCAA tournament win.
-
Don't forget how highly ku was ranked when we beat them ... and if the unmentionable happens, we can claim a good bragging point.
-
"Beasley and Walker are gone but the streak remains."
That's a post you'll never have to read. ku, and it's not even close.
-
Morons. What is more important? An NCAA tourney win or a win against ku? Answer: A tourney win, especially one that was prime time. Who gives a sh*t about ku? Seriously...we're now, what?, 1-24 against them at home...yippie.
-
We won our last tourney game in 1988?? Look how much that helped our program.

Wooly beat ku in the '05-06 season....thank god, helped the program out a ton.

USC hands down

We're not better off now than we were before then??

We are because we won a tourney game

Stop that.

It didn't do anything for Wooly.
An NCAA tourney appearance and win, with a first year coach, will go further with recruits and for the program than a regular season win against ku. It's not that the ku win wasn't big, the USC win was just bigger.
-
Short term: ku
Long term: USC

It didn't do anything for Wooly.
Didn't he get an extra year on his contract that he probably wouldn't have got ... partly because of that win??

It might or might not. Beating the No. 2 team in the country, especially if they end up in the Final 4 gives us a recruiting point, plus pictures like this are pretty damn cool:

ku win was bigger.
-
Just food for thought, but we are going to get a lot of pub if ku continues in the tourney because of our win over them. We'll get more mention from that than we will our first round win.
I know some like to imagine that our beating USC now has hundreds of america's youth working their little butts off to become Wildcats but the reality is this season matters to us fans more than anyone/anything and getting THAT monkey off our backs is huge. One tard vote here.

I bet you can come up with something that makes MJ even "madder".

In response to the origional question.
I hate ku.
I dont hate USC.
Therefore, the ku win was bigger to me.

No, Wooly got an extra year cause he was boys with Wefald. Weiser wanted him gone. Wooly was fired because he couldn't even get to the NIT, let alone the NCAA.
Winning a game in the Tourney > any ku win. We got talked about more by ESPN and CBS and got to more people/recruits because of that USC win than the ku win.
-
Alternate food for thought: We have and will beat ku with crapty teams from time to time (see in Lawrence). It may or may not mean anything when we do it next. We never have and probably never will win an NCAA Tourney game with a crapty team. It will mean something every time we win one.
-
ku, because it ended the streak. gained fans. showed we can beat ku, even with their best team in their history. we also kind of kicked their ass.
USC was also huge.

My bad about Woolly, although if he had won against ku at home, maybe he doesn't get fired.

For a couple of days ... the ku victory got great coverage too ... and it helped us get into the tourney in the first place.

if it was just some random ncaa first round game against team x, the kuwinners might have an argument. but it wasn't, it was walker/beasley over mayo. every recruit in the country knows those names, and cares about them. even those that have never heard of, or care about, ksu, usc or ku.

True, nobody knows any of those ku players.

if we had beaten wisconsin, then wisconsin >>>> ku. but, you need to make it out of the first weekend to really make your mark.
the ku win was big for the home fan base. I can't begin to think how devastated everyone would be had we lost to them @ home again. Think when we beat them in bram next year, it will be a total signal of a new era.

FYI, I found the spikes.. I'm still looking for the cross beam...

I was already pumped for the gap from weekend one to weekend two even though I knew it was a long shot. Does it get better than that time period as far as message boarding? I hope I get to find out soon. :crybaby:

I agree. Not too many people are impressed that we made it to the... dirty thirty (two)?

Had we of beaten whisky, imo, it'd been: whisky > usc > ku.
The ku win was huge. Just think that the tourney win, especially as hyped as that USC game was (from a national perspective.....like KC hyped the ku game, but it was in fracking ESPN+ for frack sake) was much bigger.
-

most recruits really don't care about college bball. they only pay attention to the future nbaers. wisconsin would have been a non-event.
the ku thing matters only in terms of attendance. if it helps keep the doom full through a mediocre season next year, then i'd agree that it was bigger. but our fanbase is incredibly fickle. they'll bail as soon as they realize we really aren't going to be a better team without beasley.
-
ku, only because had we not had that signature of a win, we don't even get to USC.

Obviously playing in the big dance has national implications, but the first round games are broadcast regionally ... and our own regional coverage was disrespected by frequent interruptions from the Belmont vs. Duke game. If the game was broadcast to regions where we plan to recruit, then maybe it does have bigger impact ... if not, then it's kind of a tossup.

espn+ dude. no one saw our ku game nation-wide, which utterly sucks...because that game left a lasting impression on the people that were there/saw it. (brennan saying it was game of the year, ku people saying it was the loudest arena ever...etc)
Our USC game was shown on basic cable to over 50% of the country in HD. No contest there.

90 percent of that 50 percent of the country was the hotbed recruiting area of the Midwest. We saw the coverage maps posted. It doesn't matter so much that people didn't see the ku game; the results of the game made national news. Beating the No. 2 team in the country tends to do that, especially when there's compelling footage available of our fans rushing the court after the game.

No HD. I'm dead serious, it makes a huge difference. Trying to watch the ku game was pitiful, you couldn't see sh1t the quality was miserable. It def. resonated in big 12 country....but how much of our roster comes from there? Maybe a third?

What part of beating the No. 2 team in the country makes you think that beating ku would only resonate in Big 12 country??

The USC game was shown in all of the midwest (including Michigan, Illinois, Indiana) and all of California. More people watched that KSU vs USC game than the ku game. By far. And more people, nationally, were talking about it than after the ku win. Why? Because it's the fracking NCAA tournament and that's what people remember teams by. They don't remember "ku, winners of the Big 12" they remember "ku, chokes every year in the Tourney".

Hey, I hope you're right. I just remember seeing a lot more national coverage of our program after beating ku, but now it seems like we may be quickly forgotten, unless Beasley or Walker decide to stay.

we beat ku, had won 6 in a row, and were leading the b12 a third of the way through conference season. we got exposure before getting exposed.
-
Against USC we were in cities like Detroit, Chicago, Indianapolis, Los freaking Angeles, San Diego, St. Louis, KC. We got major coverage from CBS and ESPN.
Against ku, we were basically on in KC and possibly St. Louis. We got no Texas coverage because UT and A&M were playing at the same time. We got coverage from ESPN.

Some of that exposure was based on one particular factor. Can you guess what it was in the lead paragraph from an AP story below?
Michael Beasley had 33 points and 15 rebounds to lead Kansas State to an impressive 82-57 win over Iowa State and setting up a mammoth showdown with No. 2 Kansas on Wednesday.

ku was bigger for k-state fans, specifically those that live in kansas.
usc was bigger in pretty much every other way.

We already acknowledged that the game against ku wasn't broadcast as extensively, but the results of the game still received a lot of national attention. ku was unbeaten, so our victory had an impact over national rankings and in stories about the other teams that might move ahead of ku in the polls.
-
Perhaps this will help..
KSU-ku - little coverage in the lead up, nice coverage afterwards for a day (was mentioned here in Phoenix).
KSU-USC - A least a week's worth of coverage up the game. Fox Sports / ESPN / CBS all talking about the matchup. Local coverage I know in most regions had a small 3-4 minutes on "THE GAME IN THE FIRST ROUND" and K-State / USC was prominent. During the game, one of the most watched and anticipated on MMOD. After the game, much larger coverage and K-State got all kinds of love.
There is no comparison. Like Phreak said.. the KSU-ku game was more for instate people.
-
I'll be cheap and say both.
For the diehard K-State fan in me, I have to say ku. Ending that streak in Manhattan was big. But at the time it also put us in 1st in the league and gave us a ton of press.
For getting K-State out on the national stage, I say USC. USC was a name opponent, Mayo vs Beasley, perhaps one of the most intriguing first round match-ups in years. And the Cats went out and played great, so much so that many were putting us in the Sweet 16, if not the Elite 8 vs Kansas. Unfortunately we didn't live up to our end vs Wisc.
But both games were huge for our program, just in different ways.
-
More importantly which was the bigger let down. Losing to an undermanned Mu team 3 days after your biggest win in the Bram or losing to a bunch of "white boys in ugly jerseys" 2 days after beating your "rivals"
-
and to ask the inevitable response....Bradley.
-
How about this: Go away.
-
I know USC was big time exposure, but beating ku put us in the tourney. It was a win over the #2 ranked team in the country. The only other unbeaten aside from Memphis. We beat a one seed. Compare that to a win over an unranked USC team.

We didn't beat ku, they didn't play their A game. We were an 11 seed because of it.

Yes they did it's just that the refs were controlling the pace of the game.

Both were big. USC was bigger because the stage was considerably bigger.

They have formulas that account for that and adjust the RPI accordingly.

Yes they did it's just that the refs were controlling the pace of the game.

Being on the east coast, I didn't get to see the USC game (ACC country) :yuck:
While only SD, I did get to see the ku game. And yes, there was a lot of national press for that game. I'm not sure I agree that the USC game played to a much bigger stage than the ku game. There were fewer big games to cover on Sports Center the night we broke the streak, and you know how ESPN loves to feature highlights on games they cover. Recruiting-wise, the ku game meant more. The whole DC Assault area, along with the entire east coast, was watching Duke eke out a lucky win over Belmont.
-
Gotta get that commemorative video for that USC win.
