Title: Does anyone see us REALLY winning the North?
Post by: KSUTOMMY on October 15, 2007, 08:12:06 AM
IMO, here are the contenders and the remaining schedules -

KSU 6-1 or 5-2

Oklahoma State W (razor thin)
Baylor W
at Iowa State W
at Nebraska W (it might look in doubt at times)
No. 15 Missouri  50/50 (MU should win - Pinkel factor should be remembered)

ku 4-4 or 5-3

at Colorado L (Cody will be hungry for some revenge)
at Texas A&M 50/50 (aTm just hasn't impressed this year)
Nebraska W (I hate to admit it, but NU+ISU = 5/6 Big 12 N)
at Oklahoma State L (I just feel that)
Iowa State W (see above)
No. 15 Missouri L (MU will beat them for the last game of the season)

CU 5-3

#15 Kansas W see above
#22 Texas Tech L (pass pas pass and pass some more)
#15 Missouri L (MU at home is pretty tough)
at Iowa St W (see above)
Nebraska "     "    "

What do you all think?

If we win the north, it will be one of those fake north championships in which we are tied with two teams at 5-3 but don't go to the title game.

How can you not see Missouri as a contender BTW?

I don't think so.  There is always a chance, but I still think this team has some issues.  Still, I think we might finish better than I expected going into the season.

If we beat Oklahoma State this weekend then we can talk about having a good chance to win the North.  Beat them and then suddenly our schedule sets up well with 3 bad teams and then MU at home.  And yes NU is a bad football team right now.

Why is it so hard for you guys to admit that ku is in the drivers seat for the north.  They came into your house, played their worst game of the season and still beat you.  The purple koolaid tends to lower alot of Football IQ's around here.

I don't think anyone around here lacks respect for ku.  And we didn't exactly play stellar in that game; of course your "worst game" would be against the only team you've played with a pulse.  Good teams tend to make you look worse.  LOL at ku FBIQ.

Poor grammar, but I think you see my point.

I don't.  We &@#%ed up royally by losing to krapityU.  Now we pretty much need to win out, or only lose one more game at the most.  With road games at OSU and NU and home against MU, I see 2 losses right there.  That means krapityU needs to lose 4, and that probably won't happen since everyone else in this conference either:

A) sucks (ISU)
B) has some serious off the field issues going on (fran, cally)
C) has a coach that can't win a big game (pinkel)

Actually whats sad is a fanbase that now has an inferiority complex in both of the major revenue producing sports.

As an example, I'm a die-hard chiefs fan:
Do I think the chiefs are going to the playoffs this year?  No.

Do I bring up the Martyball chiefs from ten years ago when debating the merits of the current team?  Absolutely not.

Do I think that every free agent on the market automatically wants to come and play for the chiefs?  Nope.

Do I justify a questionable hire at coach by slinging racially tinged comments about how smart he is?  (Yeah but he's a smart black guy) Negative.

Do I try to take credit for other teams success because the have a former Chiefs assistant as their coach?  (Leavitt at South Florida)  Nope.

Seems as though you all dont have much left to hang your hat on.  Unrealistic expectations lead to greater disappointments, so by all means, keep it up.

I think we have to win out and hope Mizzou loses somewhere (likely) and ku loses to two of these three: @CU, @OSU, MU.  It is possible but not likely.  ku has a nice schedule lined up for a run at it this year.

One consideration not yet mentioned is injuries and depth. We've dealt injuries already that has helped us develop some depth and we'll see others. We can't afford to have Nelson or Freeman go down. Losing Campbell, Watts, Murphy or Johnson would hurt badly as well.
Missouri can't lose Daniels and having one of their tight ends out would be a blow.
ku has been very healthy, but why shouldn't they? True, injuries can happen against nobodies (see El's senior year) but it seems to me they pile up in a hard-hitting game that really means something, see last year's Texas game for an example, especially if the follow on other games against quality teams. It's the wear down effect. My guess is they have less depth than MU or K-State and as hoax fans keep reminding us, they're young. You know they don't want to try to win without Reesing, but who sees him making it through the year?
But it's not always the stars but the cluster injuries that really hurt. Two or three injuries to the O-line, D-line of D-backs.
In short, if K-State stays healthy, develops consistency and wins some close games, hell yes.

EXACTLY!!! We win this weekend and we have just as much chance as ku - it is just that ku isn't stellar (their worthless) on the road in conf. and until they prove that they can muster a win on the road in conf - there is always that question. To say it is a two team race is nuts!

With your rational, ku should be able to beat UT (convincingly) then - right? Beemer, if you beat someone then I will have a little more respect for you gaudy record. Excluding our D- game that you all almost lost to, your wins came against teams with a combined record of 11-22... and that's including the crappy teams that they are playing against right now! Actually, I apologize - you have a lot to be proud of, you are "undefeated" and ranked 13/15 where the closest other undefeated team ahead of you is 3rd... that speaks volumes right there.

Whatever helps you sleep at night.  K-State's D-game was in large part to ku's defense.  It was also in large part to ku's offensive line dominating the line of scrimmage.  ku left points off the board and still managed to win in Manhattan pretty easily.  If a screen pass doesn't bounce off of Fields' facemask, K-State isn't even in the game.  Funny... even your own coach said ku was the better team.

Both teams left points off the board, ku's mistakes were canceled out by KSU's mistakes (http://www.ksufans.com/forums/index.php?topic=17411.msg222439#msg222439).  Both teams are very good, ku a little better, and the game reflected that.

Coach's don't talk up opponents.  Ever.  For reals.
Reality is that ku sucks on the road and has never done anything in this conference.  Until you do something you can expect the same reaction to the crap you spew here from every other school's message board you visit.

If a screen pass doesn't bounce off of Fields' facemask, K-State isn't even in the game.

These "if a bad play hadn't happened for us" rationales are just plain stupid.  Any team can do that in a close game.  K-State fans could be saying "if Freeman just puts a little more air on a safe pass to Johnson right before halftime" or "if Freeman sees a wide open Johnson on a swing pass in the 3rd quarter" and so forth.  Each team is going to make some mistakes during the course of a game, its part of football, but using them as lame excuses of why you didn't win or win by more is moronic.

ku played a good game and they did control the LOS as the game went on and that is why they won.  Don't diminish that by posting stupid stuff please.

Its in Boulder, and I doubt the thin air will treat Mangina well as he waddles the sideline, your team may have to throw a few CPR plays in the mix.

Wonder if the NCAA would allow Marky to get a fat man cart to rove the sidelines with?
