Title: Sutton and KC event update
Post by: Pete on September 26, 2007, 08:57:50 AM
At the KC event, we asked Frank about Sutton, and Frank said Sutton is a go for this year.  I've been sweating that one, so it was nice to hear.  Although, there still seems to be an air of mystery about it.

I expect this thread to be titled "Martin at KC event" or something like that followed by a post with 7-10 bullet points.  :(

LOL.

What else was said?

Frank gave rave reviews of how well the team is working together.  He said out of all his years being around basketball, this team is coming together more quickly than any he has ever seen.  He seemed really excited about that.

Said the Florida A&M game is officially signed and done for the Sprint Center in late December.

Clent said Jake looks good at the point, but that Fred likely won't spend any time at point...not really shocking.

Beasley is prone to car sickness.

Walker, Beasley, and Hoskins said that this  :eyeseeyou: is officially "out" now.  That disappointed me.  No word on what the new "one" is, despite our repeated requests.

Wyatt is quite possibly the biggest nerd I have ever seen speak in public...but seems sincere.  Said we'd "kick ku's ass" this year in football.  Yep, he said "ass."

Keitz basically told the players that they are the saviors of the program and placed what amounts to the biggest burden in the history of KSU sports on their backs...good firey speech by KK.  Got the blue hairs in a tizzy.

Lon Floyd has a marvelous head of hair.  Quite striking in person.

Jack Par is tall.  A bit taller than Beasley.  Jack claims that he can "judge people well" and that Frank is a great guy...so we got that going for us.  Apparently Jack's wife is quite fond of Cotton Fitzsimmons.

Jerry Lawson kicked off the event with a nice racist joke about middle eastern people.  That was hilariously awkward, and offputing.  Nearly lost the beer through my nose after that one.

What kind of mystery was it when he mentioned Sutton...ominous or "you won't be happy" or "you will be suprised" or what?  Good report so far btw.

Ya, that came out wrong.... I think that has to be a good thing that Frank's wife is black.  OR, can we not even talk about that?  Seriously, I have no idea...looking for clarification on that point.

Here's the thing, he seemed kinda vague about it.  Plus, Clent seemed like I was asking him to tell me the combination to his families Swiss bank account when I asked him about it.

They both said that Sutton would be here, but they seemed reluctant to speak about it....and not annoyed, but rather "well, I really shouldn't talk about this, but yeah, he'll be here at some point" kinda vibe.  I'll officially be wigged about this until I see Sutton on the court in a game.

I asked him the same thing and it was sort of an awkward smile and nod, not a "hell yes he will be here"

I interpreted it as a "he intends to be here but we will see" sort of answer.  Until he is officially not coming, they gave the right answer for this type of event.  Everyone is supposed to be positive.  I left with a heck of a buzz and visions of Big XII titles in both sports dancing in my head so they did their job.

the food blew.

Probably because they have no idea why they had 50 drunks continually asking about him.  As in "why the f*ck do people keep asking about Sutton?!?".

If I'm not mistaken, the root of all this was/is the fact that Sutton is not in the white pages.  I would say that if Sutton was 100%, without a doubt at KSU and practicing with the team and everything was fine, you'd hear that…instead you hear "he'll be there".  Now, maybe part of that is responding to the tens of hundreds of fans that asked them the same question over and over again.

Clent Stewart is a very sharp dressed young man.

He may try playing in Europe.  Not sure if he wants to get into coaching or not.  Is from Tulsa, NOT Broken Arrow.

Well folks I might as well give you my update on last night's events as well. The following is a recap of last night's events.

Jack Harry did a little story about the CATBACKER EVENT in KC last night in his nightly sports spot on the NBC news in KC that I watched just before hitting the sack for the night.  Showed a few of the players being interviewed surrounded by bluehairs that can afford such luxurious events, few nerds getting crap signed (SORRY PETE!), etc.

Anywho- he interviewed Clent Stewart.  It was some basic canned question to which Clent gave some basic canned response.

I turned off the "news" and went to bed.  Last night I slept really well (up late the previous night because of loud and violent lightning storms came through KC  :ohno: ) - It was a sleep meant for kings... During my slumber I was awoken only once, somewhere around 4:20 am by a bored and lonely persian cat who meowed loudly at me for a few brief moments before returning to whatever bored lonely persian cats do at 4:20 am.

My dreams came in the shape of a spider, Clint Stewart, a golf course, and some old man who I was not able to identify.  Clint was sitting on the couch, I was playing golf and walking through the pro shop where Clint was sitting watching the spider.  I walked past him and he said something to me.  I got in his face and told him to enjoy his time on the bench this season.  The spider kept walking and left the room we were in.  I woke up to a cat meowing. EOM.

It's funny you mention that because we spent a good part of our night joking about what must be going through Beasley's mind when all the old laddies and comic-book guys stroll up and make chit chat before asking him to sign a cocktail napkin.

We did witness a guy mix up Beasley and Walker...he had an athlon with Walker on it and had Beasley sign it.  Dude turns around to our table and shows it off to us, at which point a guy at my table goes "you just had Beasley sign on Walker's photo?"...dude just gets back in line and has Walker sign it as well.  Nice little collectible to pass down to the grand kids there.

I think the only 08's that we both have legitimate shots at are Witherspoon, Little, and maybe Gilchrist.  Anyone else and I'm less excited.  I almost want Little just for immediate 08 help and experience on the squad, but I'd probably be happiest with Spoon.  Gilchrist is top notch too.  I'd be happy with any of those three, anything else and I'm disappointed in the over hype by Frank.

1. Spoon
2. Gilchrist (only because he's flaky and I'd be on the edge of my seat until he actually got here.)
3. Little

We have four scholarships now that Samuels is here, right? Assuming, Beas and Walker leave and Sutton is on the team. So a class of Spoon, Gilchrist, Little ad some other guy would be pretty damn good. I mean, about what we were expecting outside of landing Kadji.
