I don't mind Modest Mouse, but I heard they suck live- as in they're one of the bands that just lets the audience sing.

And no, I do not have King Geedorah.

Would be funny if it weren't baseless. The last two albums, yes, lack a bit of range. Prior to that, no.

My reasoning for guessing your disdain for them would be vocal tracks similar to MM, not being "emotional".

I just think they write better songs.  I don't have a big problem with MM's vocals, just the annoying songs.

First of all, let me start by saying i hate all of you.

Leyton - if you haven't listened to a majority of a bands work i would not pass judgement on a singular sound. but if you have listened to everything i don't know how you couldn't see that modest mouse has been one of the most changing and unique sounding bands i have ever listened to. I completely agree about the last two albums. I havn't even listened to the new one, because i don't want to ruin any more of their music for me.

WorldWideBalla21- you should not be allowed to ever comment on any music ever.

ew2x4 - i don't know about now, but when i saw them in 2000 they put up one hell of a show. they were even comparable to their openers, !!!.

Rusty - it makes sense that you don't like modest mouse

Kilgore - I hope to god they play some of the old stuff for your sake.

I am a little bit biased when it comes to modest mouse. They, along with 764-Hero, Built to Spill, and The Appleseed Cast were what started me on my downward spiral into good music.

Meh.  If the vast majority of the band's concert-going fans don't care that Modest Mouse has produced more than their last two albums, I shouldn't have to know that they've produced anything more interesting than the monotonous crap that I hear on the radio from them.

No,  I just quietly listen and smile affectionately at the people singing around me.  It's cool to mouth the lyrics and maybe give a whimpering rendition of your own, but if you're at full volume, I'm not diggin' it.

Man, I hate Modest Mouse.  One sound...how many songs?  About as creative and musically diverse as Nickelback.  Float On was great, for a month or two, but I started getting pissed off when every other song of theirs that I heard had the same chord progressions.

Leyton almost described the concert to a T.

The opened with "Bury Me With It", did a f*cking awesome job, and I thought, "damn, they might convert me".  Then they played Float On.  Fifteen goddam times in a row.  They played Float On with a banjo, slow Float On, Float On with a cello, Float On with an extended solo, Float On with an accordian, "hard rock" Float On, Float On with a trumpet, then did an encore with an extended version of Float On.

I really don't understand how they sold so many tickets...they aren't "edgy" enough any more to bring out the music purists, but they still seem too rough around the edges to appeal to the Dragon Shirt crowd.

Side Note:  I swear I saw BMW.  He was wearing Khaki shorts, no shirt, and some kind of shark tooth necklace.  Him and his boyz took about 30 pictures during the encore (in the middle of the crowd) (LOL).

Rusty: the hipster's anti-hipster.

If you thought the 10+ minute version of "Tiny Cities Made of Ashes" or "Out of Gas" sounded anything like Float On, I'm not sure I can ever trust your judgment on music again outside a moderate recommendation of The Sheds. Leyton already hung himself in effigy comparing Modest Mouse with the likes of Nickelback, even in jest, but your review is pathetic and trite.

My recommendation is this: get over yourself and try to enjoy a show ya hipster &@#%!

according to SPC, the sound check took a while because they had to "de-tune" their guitars....

and yes rusty...you suck at life.  The extended versions of Tiny cities made of Ashes and during the encore, Spitting Venom were amazing.

I'd like to hear some of your music, Rusty, since apparently you can make much better music.  I'd be truly interested to see how you get around the 'same progressions in every song' motif, that you complain about.  Start by making seven albums, then I'll listen to the last two and make my judgements solely on those albums.

LMK.

I'll admit to being a tad dramatic, but you have to admit that I was right, for the most part.  Out of Gas uses the same basic chord progression as Float On...just slowed down.  Sorry I lost your musical trust.  :-[

Other thoughts:  City Market was an awesome venue, IMO...MM had the worst sound crew in history...Where does everyone go after the concert?  You'd think the bars would be packed.  We went straight to Harry's (:lick:) and got a table in no time.

according to SPC, the sound check took a while because they had to "de-tune" their guitars....

and yes rusty...you suck at life.

LMK.

LOL, that's the worst take ever.

Again, not sure you know WTF you're talking about. First of all, if you don't know the reference to The Ocean Breathes Salty I have hard time believing you knew which one Out of Gas was. Particularly due to Brock's unintelligible nature live. Furthermore, if you think that was an "awesome venue", you haven't been to many good shows. 1. The best place to be at any show is usually close, but due to the only upward grading being on what I think is the west side sloping up (can't imagine the sound carried well over there anyway), I was lucky to see any of the stage more than 30% of the time. 2. Too many damned people in a tight area. 3. The walk to buy a beer or visit a Johnny was absolutely ridiculous.

At least you said it. Your lack of mentioning a fine performance by the band you didn't mind seeing, Band of Horses, shows me what your intent of posting your critique was. You walked into the show with a prefabricated disdain for the headliner and came back out parroting Leyton's cliche'd use of "chord structure" while completely failing to mention the other band's performance. This makes you, wait for it, a music snob! Welcome to the club you mock so much. The next step is using terms like "texture", "atmosphere", "delivery" and "voice". Make sure and do that in repetitive fashion.
I'll fully admit that the cadences they use, especially when they play a great many of the songs at the same speed (one of my only criticisms of the band themselves) mixed with many of the same chords are similar on the last couple of albums. The melodies, bridges, and overall setup of their songs has drastically changed over their career.  I still enjoyed hearing the newer stuff but left wishing I'd hear just one song from This is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About, Building Something Out of Nothing, Everywhere and His Nasty Parlour Tricks (minus the end of that album at the close of the concert), and more than two singles from Lonesome Crowded West. That's an inherent problem though, anytime you change the band's lineup as much as they have. Hence, you heard about 4 tracks on anything but the last two albums and can't really pass judgment.
In short, had you just gone to be entertained and shelved your bias walking in, you'd have returned and not come off like such a know-it-all attention whore in this thread.

at the music showcase right now, the popcicles suck.  on to bigger and better music.
have to retake my take.

apparently the band i thought was the pcicles wasn't.
the overall music showcase was incredible.  saw two kickass bands at hurricane that just kicked ass.  then went to beaumont for popcicles and damn they were incredibly kick ass.  missed the jazz fusion joint that rusty recommended because i thought i was at the right place but wasn't.

overall...A+ effort from the Pitch Music Showcase.  really great.

and i would have for sure introduced myself to bmw, why the hell not?

we're not all the dickheads we seem when u get us from behind the monitors (except sys)

I had to look up out of gas on Youtube.

With a few exceptions, Modest Mouse's songs all sounded the same last night.  If I'm wrong for thinking a band should play more than 3 or 4 unique/good songs in a two hour set, oh well.

I thought Band of Horses was better, but still meh-ish.

I liked City Market because it was unique.

Suck it.

I'm not trying to come off as an asshole here, I'm actually a fairly easy going guy, but apparently totally misunderstood on message boards because I use a lot of dry jokes and sarcasm.

I just like what I like and I don't understand why people have to try and drag certain genre's, band's, and artists down with the debbie downer routine.  Your post seemed like a prime canidate.

If you don't like it, that doesn't bother me, but why complain about it when you can't really claim you know all their stuff? nor walking in, you already had a bad attitude about the band in the first place.  You just set yourself up for failure and a not-so-great night right out of the gates.
