Title: An Important Announcement from Bill Callahan
Post by: Bill Callahan on May 09, 2007, 04:09:00 PM
My Dear KSU friends,

The past couple of days were really difficult for me as I agonized over what to do about Maurice Purify. It had occurred to me immediately that whatever punishment I handed to him needed to be in accordance with common practice in the Big 12 north, in order to be fair to our opponents. To that end, I compiled a list of KSU players that have been arrested since 1993 for comparison (see below). I noted lots of assaults by your players, especially in the Aggieville district, and there were other serious crimes as well. I took special note of the case of Cliff Holloman. For those of you who don’t remember, Holloman was a starting defensive tackle who assaulted his girlfriend outside a bar in Manhattan and pleaded no contest. Snyder had him in the starting lineup the following week, and he wasn’t kicked off the team.

After viewing the list, and seeing the general lack of control exercised by Snyder over his prominent players, I have decided to let Maurice Purify off lightly. He will come to the coaches meeting room next week where coaches Wagner and Jordan will take turns slapping him on the wrist.

Thank you for your assistance in this manner.

Yours truly,

Bill Callahan

Here are some of Kansas State’s arrests since 1993:

- 2006 Kansas State’s leading receiver, Rashaad Norwood, was arrested in a parking lot at your school. He was involved in an argument and refused to disperse when police confronted him. When they arrested him, he refused to cooperate or even give his name. (I based Sam Keller’s punishment off this).

- MICHAEL BISHOP was arrested for assault outside a Manhattan bar in spring of 1998. Snyder claimed he was charged only because he was black and got the charges were subsequently dropped.

- A woman claimed ELL ROBERSON sexually assaulted her the night before the Fiesta Bowl, while he was breaking the team curfew. Snyder allowed him to play anyway, as he was greatly needed, and after “speaking” with other KSU boosters the woman was silenced.
* “I am very much embedded in the athletic department at Kansas State and in the police department at Kansas State, and I can assure you that in many times, especially in a game like this, where Kansas State, this is their star quarterback, they are not going to do anything about him.”

- CHAD MAY, another successful quarterback for you, was arrested for DUI in 1994. That completes the trifecta of successful KSU qb’s: May, Bishop, and Roberson were all arrested during the height of their glory.

- Manny Dies, one of your standout basketball players was arrested in 1998 on a variety of drug charges.

- Cornerback Chris Canty was arrested in 1996 for DUI.

- Mark Young, another basketball player for Kansas state, was arrested in 1997 for traffic charges and failing to appear in court.

- James McGill (safety) and Daniel Davis (wide receiver) were arrested in 2003. 2003 was a pretty successful year for Kansas State wasn’t it?

- Justin McKinney, a defensive back Ron Prince praised last year, was subsequently arrested for writing bad checks.

- Matt Martin, one of Kansas State’s offensive lineman in 2000, was arrested for nearly hitting a parking attendant with his car when she tried to impound his vehicle.

- Kansas State running back Joe hall was arrested in 2001 for probation violations, his fourth run-in with the law at the time.

- Thomas Clayton was arrested for nearly hitting a parking attendant in 2006. (What is it with your players and trying to hit parking attendants?)

- Starting KSU defensive tackle Cliff Holloman was arrested in 1999 FOR BATTERY OF A WOMAN. Despite pleading no contest to this, he was in the starting line-up against Colorado the following week…

- In 1995, All-conference KSU safety Chuck Marlow was arrested for ASSAULTING A POLICE OFFICER AND ANOTHER PERSON. He also damaged property.

- Allen Webb, another KSU qb, was arrested in 2004 for battery. (Did Snyder have any quarterbacks that didn’t get into serious trouble?)

- Dederick Kelly, a KSU fullback, was arrested in 1994 for DUI.

- In 2002, KSU fullback Travis Wilson was arrested for assaulting a woman.

- In 1996, Defensive Tackle Lance Grace was arrested for assault outside a Manhattan bar.

Who was the indicted murderer who was allowed to start in the national title game?

I think "glass houses" is the whole point of this. Before anyone even knew exactly what happened a few of your fans were making posts here and on rivals about what "scum" Purify was and that he should be kicked off the team immediately. Looking at the above list it appears clear to me that players getting into fights at bars isn't a unique problem at Nebraska, and if Callahan were to follow the precedent set by Snyder then Purify WOULD just get slapped on the wrist.

Callahan has a good record of disciplining players, and I think he will get to the bottom of what happened and do the right thing.

Kansas State fans use it in signatures and such on message boards.

EMAW

I looked up "EMAW" on google, and luckily urban dictionary had it (above). I didn't get what the picture you added to Bill Callahan's post meant.

I had no idea you guys had your own entry on urban dictionary.  :loly:

- MICHAEL BISHOP was arrested for assault outside a Manhattan bar in spring of 1998. Snyder claimed he was charged only because he was black and got the charges were subsequently dropped.
Link the snyder quote and the charges were dropped.  Saying Snyder caused it is bias bullcrap heresay and not fact.  Argument blows.

She was never silenced, legal proceedings were drawn out.  Who gave your BS quote and link it cause it is crap  The situation was crappy but given the facts from both sides, it seems all Ell really did was sleep with a girl that didn't even know who she was sleeping with.  His crime: crappy judgment and curfew violation.

- Cornerback Chris Canty was arrested in 1996 for DUI.

- Mark Young, another basketball player for Kansas state, was arrested in 1997 for traffic charges and failing to appear in court. Who?? Hardly comparable to Purify.

- James McGill (safety) and Daniel Davis (wide receiver) were arrested in 2003. 2003 was a pretty successful year for Kansas State wasn’t it? What for? Must of been ommited for a reason

- Matt Martin, one of Kansas State’s offensive lineman in 2000, was arrested for nearly hitting a parking attendant with his car when she tried to impound his vehicle. Didn't Keller do this one with a cup but actually hit her?  Oh wait, he probably missed which is why your much praised future award winner is all of a sudden in a battle for the position.

- Thomas Clayton was arrested for nearly hitting a parking attendant in 2006. (What is it with your players and trying to hit parking attendants?) Honestly, people at KSU hate campus parking attendants.

- Starting KSU defensive tackle Cliff Holloman was arrested in 1999 FOR BATTERY OF A WOMAN. Despite pleading no contest to this, he was in the starting line-up against Colorado the following week… BATTERY OF A WOMAN?? Come on Nebraska.  Pick a fight you can win.  Your football team has to lead the country in hit women.  I'm pretty sure Lawrence Phillips has hit more women than he has had hot meals.

I think the point KSU fans are trying to make, and yes most are ready to prejudge Callahan as being soft, is about punishment and not players being criminals.  That said, the NU list is pretty F'ing long and I'm sure longer than this.

With all due respect, there is a complete double standard at work here. Your fans make claims like "Osborne controlled the police and state, yada, yada..." but then when Snyder suspiciously makes stuff disappear for your players you never even question it.

I could go through Nebraska players you guys like to bring up and make both valid and vague excuses for a lot of them too. For example, a lot of you love to bring up Christian Peter, but you do realize he was accused of rape, and not convicted? Sound familiar? Ell Roberson anyone? Osborne got out of the way too and let the courts handle it, and the girl dropped the charges for money...she didn't even accuse him until he was about to go pro, two years after the incidents were said to have occurred. On the other hand, from what I've heard, some of your boosters raked Roberson's girl over the coals before the investigation could even begin.

So why is it that whenever a Nebraska player gets accused of something he did the worst things possible in the accusations and it's all true, and when a KSU player does equally bad stuff they are made out to be framed and you guys make excuses them?

(I'm not talking trash, I am just amazed by this apparent double standard and I am interested to see how you think. For those of you that are irritated at me, I have been supportive of your program, but I never promised I was going to agree with you on everything. I've got to go right now, but I'll be around again later.)

Snyder and K-state had/have no control over the state government.

The government did not rename a highway after Bill Snyder.

We did not put Ron Freeman in office.

We are not the ones you seek.

Christian Peter did a lot more then get accoused of rape he was arressted a ridiculous amount of times and was a convicted sex offender.  Stuff even followed  him the NFL to the point where the team that drafted him initially (the Patriots) ended up letting him go when the stuff he did at NU came out about him.  That  has to be some pretty bad stuff for a team to walk away from a draft pick.

Roberson I don't think ever even got charged with anything so no alumni's raked anyone over the coals. It happened in Arizona and was all wrapped up before they even got back.  She accoused him they questioned him and let him go that is all that happened.   It made national news at the time but it was bad reporting at the end of the day all Roberson did was violate his team curfew.

It is all a big joke. Fatty was kidding in the Mo Purify thread for the most part. We know that we are just as bad as every other university when it comes to crap like this. Every school in the country has the exact same problems and they aren't usually worse at one university or another. That's just what comes with a winning program. And Snyder (and possibly now Prince) OWNS the Kansas government. Like Phreak said.. He has a highway named after him. Prince put Ron Freeman in office so that Josh would come here. Ell and Bishop's arrests got erased. Seriously, we have total control over this state.

Peter had I think 4 misdemeanors. He got in trouble for groping a girl in a bar. Was he a jerk? Sure, but he was punished appropriately for these minor crimes. As far as the alleged rape, no matter how much you deny it, he is in the same boat as Roberson. No conviction, just an accusation from a girl. This girl waited until Peter was about to make a lot of money to even accuse him (two years), and then she took money rather than continuing to pursue the charges in court. The Patriots drafted him rightfully, but then their owner's wife bought into the unproven allegations and convince her husband not to sign him.

Did he do it? I don't know, but I do know that he went to court and nothing came of it. The Duke Rape Case has also taught me that sometimes people make false allegations, and Peter made an easy target because he was 1) a jerk and 2) about to make a lot of money.

This is exactly what I was talking about when I said there was a double standard here. You just threw Peter under the bus for vague and unfounded allegations, but when one of your athletes is in the same situation you make excuses for him.

Roberson was accused of sexual assault the day of they game. Some of your boosters immediately went to work on the girl, claiming she was "obsessed" with Roberson and making it up. If you could put down your purple Kool-Aid for just one second you would have to admit that situation stunk to high heaven.

I don't know if you guys "own" the state or anything, but I do think a lot of the same stuff was going on at your school. I think it goes on at most schools, and you deal with it as best as you can.

I'll be the first to admit that Osborne made some big mistakes. In my opinion he wanted to play counselor too much and he couldn't see the writing on the wall for a guy like Phillips, who everyone else could plainly see was bad news.

Callahan has a good record of discipline. There are two stories circulating about Purify right now. In one I would support kicking him off the team, and in the other I think he just deserves a 1 or 2 game suspension. There were a lot of witnesses, so I think the right thing will be done, whether that be good or bad for Purify.

No the double standard belongs with the Corn.  For starters see JC recruiting and then go from there.

I want to add that I like you guys and I think your really funny. I just am kind of amazed that some of you don't see the double standards at work here.

In 1993, Melissa DeMuth filed a police complaint saying Peter invited her to his room in the company of his friends, and then sexually assaulted her. Also in 1993, Peter repeatedly grabbed Natalie kuijvenhoven, a former Miss Nebraska, by the crotch in a crowded bar and in an obscenity-laced tirade told her how much she loved it. Peter was convicted of sexual assault and received 18 months probation.

Peter was arrested a total of eight times, and convicted four times. The charges included threatening to kill a parking attendant, trespassing, public urination, refusing to comply with police, illegal possession of alcohol, failure to appear in court, and grabbing a woman by the throat.Continued...

That is an exert from an 1997 articleI found about Peter.  If you can't see the difference between a guy being arrested multiple times and convicted of sex crimes vs. a guy accoused once and never even arressted or charged with anything then I don't know what to tell you.  Perhaps there is a double standard but trying to compare Christian Peter to Ell Roberson is laughable you picked a very bad example for your analagy.

I acknowledged that, and he was punished. Yes, we both agree he was a jerk, but he was punished for what he was proven to have done.

It was and is a perfect example because both were accused of rape and neither one was convicted. However, to this day some of your fans continue to refer to the Christian Peter "rape" while completely ignoring the fact that your boosters flung Roberson's accuser under the bus just so he could play.

Peter's accuser had strong incentives to accuse him (money). What motives did Roberson's accuser have?

Peter was sent to court and the girl took money. In Roberson's case the whole thing was smothered before it could go anywhere.

I find some the rocks you throw baffling.

If this is in reference to us recruiting JUCO's now I agree with you. I think it's funny that some of our fans still try to make fun of KSU for doing that, when our new coach likes to do it too.

Callahan has made it clear that he intends to go after JUCO's every year.

the difference is that roberson wasnt a proven jerk with a long criminal history.  peter has a criminal history other than just the rape.

Then you admit that there is no difference at all because he was never charged.
The guy was a jerk with a drinking problem. His judgement really sucked. This does not make him a rapist.

Here is the career bio of Christian Peter:

Football career: Defensive tackle at Nebraska, 1993-95. 1995 honorable mention All-American. 1995 All Conference. Drafted by New England Patriots 1996. Dropped by Patriots in wake of publicity about misdemeanor convictions for assault and charges of sexual assault. Played for New York Giants, 1997-2000, Indianapolis Colts, 2001, Chicago Bears, 2002.

Wow this is the first thing that came up when I googled NU and the Peter name.  I believe this from Jason Peter:

“I’d get up and take 20 Vicodin, wait a little bit and take some more, then some more and by the end of the day I had put down about 80 of the pills,” Peter said. “I liked the way they made me feel.”

“I was in a fog but I couldn’t get that feeling that pills gave me any more. I started getting pains where I never had pain before. I’d hit my finger on something and it hurt like I broke it. I was creating pain so I’d take more pain pills.”

With crack cocaine, he would stay up four and five days, then sleep for 24 hours or more.

“That started to wear off, so I switched to heroin. I’d get up and get high. I never did anything. I was such a good customer, the dealers were glad to deliver the drugs right to me.”

“I knew more dealers than friends. I had used my athletic ability more than once to run away from the cops. I’m talking about spending a couple of days on the run in the streets in New York City. I’m tough, but I’m not prison tough.”

Ell is a saint compared to the Peter brothers....and Ell ain't no saint.

You do realize that no matter how many times you recycle the same information, it is still the same information, right? We've discussed this...he had four misdemeanors which he was punished for. Other than that he was in the same boat as Roberson. Both were accused of rape, and neither one was convicted. And the legal process was allowed to play out in Nebraska...

Whoa, whoa...what is this, guilt by relation? I feel sorry for Jason Peter. He injured his spine in the NFL and ran into a situation where he had chronic pain...severe chronic pain. This wasn't a "Ooh, my back is sore type thing." It was a "I want to die because my pain never drops below 8 on a scale from 1-10 type thing."

I don't know how familiar you are with chronic pain like that, but these people almost all end up with prescription drug addictions, and many move onto other drugs when the prescriptions lose their effects. I work in the medical field and I spoke with the family of a middle-aged woman who had developed a huge addiction to percocet. She used to be the normal Catholic mother of five daughters who didn't even drink, but then she got trigeminal neuralgia. Just to try to control her pain her pain specialist had her on so much percocet that she could barely see or think straight. She couldn't even stay awake when you were talking to her. Despite all this, her pain was still out of control.

I feel terrible for Jason Peter, and his having misfortune like that in no way makes his brother a rapist either.

Parker...it is laughable that you say KSU posters have a double standard and completely throw your own double standard....drinking corn Kool Aid spin on everything.  What Snyder always maintained was that he waited for the legal system to resolve the situation, then disciplined from there.  The fact was, Roberson's issue was resolved before he played.  As for our fans raking the poor girl over the coals first, please cite supporting documentation....have none...yeah, that's what I thought.

Parker, did I quote from you in my post?  Your red friend stated that Peter was not charged and I showed he was wrong.  And don't give that junkie brother of his a get out of jail free card because he played in the NFL, you are better than that.

I want to pause here and point out that I'm not trying to antagonize you guys. I like you guys, and it's fun chatting with you about sports, but I definitely think there is a double standard some of you don't see because you don't like Nebraska. I have been playing the devil's advocate to illustrate this. In my opinion all the players--from both schools--we have been discussing are thugs. I also think both Osborne and Snyder were too soft.

For a long time I've heard KSU fans complain about Nebraska players, and in particular Christian Peter and Lawrence Phillips. The irony kills me. As we've discussed, Christian Peter had 4 misdemeanors, which he was punished for. However, your fans routinely call him a rapist, despite giving Ell Roberson a pass. Neither one was convicted. Christian Peter's case was allowed to go to court. Ell's wasn't. In both cases there were only two people who really knew what happened. In Peter's case, however, I can see why a woman would be willing to make Duke-style accusations (he was a believable target with money). What motivation did Roberson's accuser have? She was going to be the most unpopular woman in Kansas if she accused him, and she did anyway...one hour after it happened. What happened next? Well, another one of your alumni claimed she had an obsession with Roberson, and then your administration immediately got on the news and claimed it did a "thorough" investigation amd concluded no crime had occurred. I'm sorry, but KSU had no business going on the news and saying the girl was lying so soon. Those events are factual. From there, I honestly believe some of her fellow boosters spoke with her and convinced her not to pursue it. The girl was literally facing the world alone. The problem I have is that all of that is overlooked by many of your fans, and they immediately come out to stone Christian Peter the "rapist." Personally, I think they both did it, but as it is one is no more guilty than the other.

As for Jason Peter, I do excuse him for the prescription drug addiction. You have no idea how common that is after injuries. I'm telling you that almost any of you will probably end up dependent on them if you end up in a situation like his. Furthermore, "Jason Peter got injured and developed a prescription drug addiction, so his brother must have been a rapist" doesn't add up.

And what can you say about Cliff Holloman? After reading the above I got interested and started hunting, and from what I can tell Snyder DID have him in the line-up the following week, and I don't think anything really happened to him. Snyder was notorious for getting on the news and making excuses for his players, and dismissing what happened. Charges mysteriously disappeared for KSU players that if they had occurred at Nebraska you guys would have been screaming to the heavens about a conspiracy. When it occurs at KSU, you accept it without a second thought.

My honest opinion is that all of these guys are thugs, and I think all of them got away with a lot of stuff they shouldn't have. And yes, I think Bill Snyder's Kansas State was a glass house. It's not fair to make excuses for your players and fling ours under the bus for the same circumstances.

Like I said though, I like you guys, and we are just a few grunts in the trench debating about whether or not our generals are doing the right thing. I hold nothing against you...this was just an interesting debate for me.

This is your board, so I'll let you guys have the last word. Much respect.

He was not charged in the aledged rape.

He was accused of groping a former Miss Nebraska in a bar in 1993. Peter pleaded no contest to a charge of third-degree sexual assault and was sentenced to 18 months' probation.

Snyder and K-state had/have no control over the state government.

The government did not rename a highway after Bill Snyder.

We did not put Ron Freeman in office.

We are not the ones you seek.
