Tards wanted this guy bad when krouse was offering his insurance payout to ronnie.

They wanted him as bad as patterson.

When asked why, they only came up with him "knowing what it takes to succeed in Manhattan".

I am happy KU got him. If he succeeds, we can steal him later. If he flames out, we can watch.

It was just a matter of time before Sheahon Zenger took his leadership skills to a higher level. Sources close to Jayhawk Slant said in the last couple weeks Zenger stood out over other candidates from BCS level schools and will be named the Jayhawks athletic director on Monday.

Ray Evans, the search committee chairman, told Jayhawk Slant during the search in formal interviews they were looking for the "right fit." They found that fit in Zenger.

Born in Salina, Kan., Zenger moved to Lawrence with his family at a young age. His father taught at the University of Kansas. After living in Lawrence they moved to Hays, Kan.

"My earliest memories are in Lawrence, Kansas, watching KU football and basketball games," Zenger said. "Sometimes in life things come full circle. The opportunity to stand side-by-side with KU's student-athletes, coaches, administrators, donors and fans gives me great joy."

Zenger started his college career at Mid America Nazarene. His next stop was Kansas State. After graduating he was the youngest person at 23 years old on LHC Bill Snyder's football staff. He has also been on staff with Jim Leavitt at South Florida and an assistant at Wyoming.

"He knows his football and is very knowledgeable when it comes to the game," said a source close to Zenger.

He earned his doctorate in educational policy and leadership from the University of Kansas. During that time he also worked in the chancellors office at Kansas. He did his dissertation on Del Shankel who was a chancellor at Kansas and acted as the interim athletic director.

His first experience in athletic administration came at Kansas State where worked in development and handled major gifts. He also helped implement a point system at Kansas State, which was very successful.

At Illinois State the athletic revenue is up 150 percent and annual giving has increased 100 percent. Corporate sponsorships have also seen a 75 percent increase. Two of the last three years Illinois State has won the All Sports title in the Missouri Valley Conference.

During his time at Illinois State Zenger worked on the NCAA reinstatement committee with some of the top athletic directors in the country. He was also on the executive committee for FCS athletic directors.

Sources have told Jayhawk Slant Zenger built a relationship with several BCS athletic directors with some his duties in the NCAA. Also at Illinois State Zenger built a strong working base with several athletic directors in the Big 10.

"Illinois State is in the middle of Big 10 country," an individual familiar with Zenger's work told Jayhawk Slant. "He knows a lot of people in that area and has worked close with some of them."

Zenger negotiated a Nike contract at Illinois State along with regional television football and basketball deals. Illinois State has started funding for a new football facility. They also completed funding and construction of new tennis and baseball facilities under his watch.

There are several strengths Zenger will bring to Kansas. He knows the state and will not be afraid to make trips all over to meet people and involve them in Kansas athletics. He has experience raising funds. He knows the inner workings of successful football programs. He has made tough decisions on making changes with his own football and basketball coaches.

Sources have told Jayhawk Slant that BCS athletic directors who worked with Zenger gave him good praise during the background work and search process. It is also believed Tim Jankovich, the basketball coach at Illinois State spoke highly of Zenger. Jankovich was an assistant for Bill Self before Zenger hired him.

The search committee led by Evans could have gone with an athletic director from a BCS school. As a matter of fact they could have gone with more than one. There was a high level of interest in the opening. In the end this came down to being the right fit for Kansas. Zenger was a better candidate than some of those standing BCS athletic directors.

Sometimes you have to look beyond the resumes and all the shine. There were some quality candidates that wanted the job at Kansas, but they didn't have all the qualities that Zenger will bring to the table.

He won't have to make a hire for several years so it's pretty irrelevant right now.

But he is a good dude. It is very likely that all of football coaches with ties to KSU that we dream about would prefer to work for him in Lawrence than to come back to KSU. Leavitt, Vic, Venables, Patterson, etc.
