i think what you're supposed to do is call chase and ask for a product change to the freedom

i haven't applied for the csr yet but prob will, but ya no reason to pay the $95 csp

That's probably a good idea so if I wanted the freedom it wouldn't go against my 5/24, AND it keeps my age of credit in tact. I mean, by like 11 months, but whatever.

Good point. The fee difference is what, $65 if you subtract the $300 travel credit? I guess you'd have to spend about 3k on dining and travel annually to offset the $65 just with the extra point per dollar in those categories. But you also get the PPS, which I admittedly won't use often, but it's good to know it's there. So I will probably hold on to the card.

it sounds like some are having a decent amount of success circumventing 5/24 by going into a chase branch and working with a banker through the application process

Post updates on how well it works to get $300 of travel reimbursed in 2015 and again in 2016 while only having paid 1 $450 fee.

I don't think I'll have any reason to be spending my own $300 on travel the rest of this year to be worth getting, if I even could get around 5/24 by walking up to the bank. But I'd do it around this time in 2016 if it was a lock that you could get $600 reimbursed and 100K points and 3x bonus for $450 and then canceling before the next fee.

Just got an email from discover that they've got 5% cashback on amazon through the rest of the year. Freedom's gonna tie or beat that again this year? I'm not even sure where my discover card is since they replaced my elite PR flag one with a generic one.

yeah, trim, you'll get the $300 in 2016 and again in 2017. It will count for Uber, taxis, public trans, flights, seat upgrades, hotels, etc. I'm confident anything that the CSP codes as travel for bonus points will get reimbursed.

I typed 2015 and 2016 when I meant 2016 and 2017.

I'd be shooting to do it in summer 2017 after I'm good on 5/24 again and trying to get $300 reimbursed in each of what's left of 2017 and the 1st half of 2018 before canceling it and having only paid 1 $450 fee.

eff, it's weird talking about 2018 plans. That feels like the future, like flying cars and stuff.

Right. Still doubtful I'd be spending $300 of my own money on those things the rest of 2016, but if I thought I would be, I'd hear out everyone's success stories of bypassing 5/24, especially if it's as easy as walking up to the branch.

dammit, denied. Apparently a fraudulent card opened up in my name in 2015 still showed up on my credit report, despite having opened a fraud case on it last year. That put me over the edge.
