SD, RD, and the gang, I have a dilemma.

I have been forced to use a company-pay card (company pays all bills on it).  It has a terrible points program, and they are trying to force us to use it for all work travel spend.  Just a terrible set of circumstances here.

Well, I am thinking that many of my cards are essentially obsolete.  I noticed that Steve Dave said that he cancels some of his, and then later re-applies for them.  Below are my current cards.  Since I have to use my company card to buy most travel expenses, I really won't have much occasion to use my Delta and American cards.  Do you guys think I should cancel these?  Should I just hold them in the event that I want to buy a vacation ticket retail (e.g. get the bonus points for buying a Delta ticket with the Delta card, etc.).  Is it better to have more or less active cards, when it comes time to try for new cards?  Thoughts?

Current cards:
Chase Sapphire Preferred (this is going to turn into my everyday card)
Southwest Visa Preferred
American Airlines Advantage MasterCard
Delta Skymiles American Express (this gives me one free round trip companion ticket every year, with purchase of one full fair ticket).
Marriott Signature Visa
Stupid work card diners club master card piece of crap

I'd keep the AA card if it's fee-free for the checked baggage perk and the Sapphire if you want it for the daily driver
I'd cancel or shoebox the rest.

I don't even know.  I just have this card to buy AA tickets, but rough ridin' work won't let me do that now.  I think I might cancel it.  I'd rather keep the Delta card than the AA card.

The delta one has an annual fee as well but you can't churn it.

Cancel all of the annual fee ones unless you have a reason to keep them Pete. Keep your daily driver and whatever you want for the benefits.

OK, I will do that.  Sapphire stays as the daily driver.  They others have outlived their benefit to me.  Will this make it easier for me to get approved for new cards in the future?  Like, having too many might be an issue?  I don't have any balances on them, they are merely open and active.

Not really other than with Chase who only wants you to have a certain amount of credit. But, you can just tell them to move credit around or whatever. You have no concerns here.

yes. do this immediately and then just as immediately apply for a couple of new ones. either hotel or airline ones depending on what you want/need.

pete, i think you should threaten to quit.  they're not going to lose you over a company card/personal card policy.

by lay down the law, i mean just sort of vaguely nod my head when they tell me to have the secretaries book my travel which they think means "ok", but i think means, "i hear you" then go on booking my own travel with my own cards.

I want another credit card, and plan to apply for one soon.  It looks like the Chase Sapphire Card may be the best get, but can I pay down my annual fee with points?  Otherwise, I may do a different perks card to go with my cash card.

just cancel it when the fee hits and get different cards.  you don't need to be paying fees, panjan.

I am going to handle this way, whenever I have a big incentive bonus on a card to exploit.  "Whoops, forgot and used the wrong card.  My bad."

I forget my card sometimes too Pete. That's a winning formula for me. But then I have to keep receipts.

We use Amex but we have to pay a fee to get the MR points. It pisses me off so much.

We fought this hard, and got them to reimburse us for the annual fee on the points program on the Diners card.  The points program is complete crap, but a fee on top of it was just awful, so luckily we got rid of that.

We were pissed that the Southwest points weren't 1-to-1, since they are always trying to get us to fly Southwest.  It's 1,500:1,200.  I can get 1 to 1 on Delta, which is a biggie.  However, my new Sapphire card can't get me Delta, so that stinks that I don't have a major American international carrier in common between work Diners and Sapphire.

No United and no American is tough for a bunch of Northeastern city and Texas types that I work with.

I really should do more with Alaskan.
