Tell me why 1x UR is better than 6x HHonors or 2x IHG for groceries.

hilton points suck, i don't think they're worth anything at all.  they give away ihg points like trash for stays and now churnable bonuses, so no need to spend for them.  but if you did spend for them, i think worth a lot less than ur points (see link for approx values that i don't necessarily agree with, but are probably ballpark).

Sure.  Using his ballpark figures:

UR = 2.1 cents
HHonors = .5 cents
IHG = .7

So for each $1 spent on groceries, UR would be getting me 2.1 cents, HHonors would be getting me 3 cents and IHG would be getting me 1.4 cents.

Seems like I should keep my HHonors AMEX somewhere that I'll remember to take it to the grocery store only and not lose it.  Gas and dining can be done through Ink or Sapphire (or temporarily the Hyatt, Marriott, IHG or HHonors if I drop my Sapphire for a bit to get a new one).

yeah, by his numbers.  i think he is overvaluing hhilton points.  maybe you can get that sort of value on luxe resort properties or something.  i'd look at redemption values on what you actually think you'd redeem the points for.

It looks like the Hilton I stayed at recently averaged about $320/night.  I don't remember exactly what the cash price was instead, but I know when I looked at possibly having to stay an extra night once I was there, it was going to be like $380.  It was 60K/night.

That comes to a little over .5 cents, so I think he's close.  I guess it's about a wash.  The HHonors points multiplied by 6 may be a fraction of a cent more valuable than a UR, but the URs are more flexible.

I still had to pay like $40/night for valet parking, and ended up between that and using my HHonors card and a 1K gold bonus and an online booking bonus getting a little over 4K points for the "free" stay.

do whatever you want. it comes down to where you are going to be staying that could be a good redemption and if you care about juggling multiple daily spend cards. I prefer the flexibility of UR. I don't usually get good redemption with HH. like in chicago in a month the conrad and wit are 70k HH each. but they are only ~$250 a night each. the best use I've ever found for HH CPM is booking game weekends in Manhattan on points really early. even then you are usually only getting ~0.6 CPM and are stuck out at the HGI or Hampton.

if there is a certain store you go to all the time maybe you could just hide behind a big stack of toilet paper or in a bush out in the parking lot.

OK, I actually did that...and I thought it was supposed to send me an email whenever I get a message in there but apparently not because I just checked and I got a reply.

They say my friends have to call an 800 number.

did you try the @hp.com one?  it said it was going to send a conf email to the @hp.com email I used but reports online said that after a while they ended up getting a gold card in the mail.  I'm still silver online tho.
