Will you call them for me and tell them I was just joking when I let those miles expire and they should give them back and refund the purchase on my southwest card (lolface) for the ticket I just bought (to Nicaragua btw ).
United: Miles in United's MileagePlus program expire after 18 months of inactivity. Miles may be reinstated within 18 months following expiration for $50-$400, depending on the amount of miles reactivated.

40k United is worth about $800 for a normal non complete dumbass american so use that to determine what it would cost to reinstate them.
