pretty great deal if you spend a lot of time in airports with Admirals Clubs but don't have lounge access.

Downtown Chicago Fairfield going up to category 6 on 3/15, taking it out of category 5 for which Marriott gives away free nights like they're nothing.

:frown:

the downtown river north fairfield now looks like it's going to be the only marriott cat 5 in downtown chicago. location is just as good though and i doubt you can get rooms any smaller than the downtown one that just changed to cat6. potato/potatoh. just don't try to take a cab ride back from a cubs game w/ clams and you'll be alright.

That's the one we're talking about, it's going to a 6 on 3/15.

oh well that sucks. there used to be two or three cat 5's a year ago. look likes it's still available for booking at a 5 throughout the year or whatever though so if you don't want to rush a trip in the next month you could always book something later in the year before 3/15.

True, but that was the spot for last-minute, bored, let's-get-dinner-in-chicago, avios trips.

Had my Sapphire for a year now and the annual fee showed up yesterday... Missed my reminder to cancel.

What are the chances they waive the fee when I call in today? It's been my primary card for a year and I love it - would like to keep it open but know it's probably not worth the $95.

they will waive it if you cancel today. if they waive it and you keep it probably depends on how many hundreds of thousands of dollars you spent on it last year.

Without looking I'd guess I put $1-2k a month on the card. Heavier more recently too.

Do you typically say "I'd like to close my card bc the $XX annual fee isn't worth it." and see what they fire back with, or do you just straight up ask them to waive the fee?

you can straight up ask them if they have any retention offers available. you don't have to beat around the bush with them. these are minimum wage phone jockeys reading from a script. they won't get mad at you if you just tell them you want to keep it but not pay the fee and then ask them what offers (if any) they have on their list that you would qualify for so you can see if it's worth it or not. they may not have anything. some will read off 10+ different offers they could give you and you can pick whichever one (if any) you would pay the fee for. I think Chase is pretty stingy on the Sapphire though so don't get your hopes too high. airline co-branded cards are more likely to throw around various offers to keep you for whatever reason. probably because UR are Chase's proprietary product or something.

Last n00b question (I tried to figure it out from Chase last night but no luck)....

I keep my 60k+ UR points even if I close the card?

I'll hang up and listen offline. Thanks, SD.

No, I don't think you keep them. Not 100% on this though. If you are going to cancel then you should move them to your hotel/airline of choice now.

I have a beginner question that is probably answered 5x through the numerous pages, but I signed up for a Marriott CC, got the 70k bonus pts in the summer time period and promptly cancelled the card.  So I did the same thing in late November all over again and then in January they said they would not be giving me add'l 70k pts.  I asked them why and they said b/c I have already rec'd the bonus from a previous card transaction.  I did this for my wife twice w/ no issues. So I asked the guy how long I would have to wait to get the bonus pts again and he said 5 years.  Clearly that was not true b/c my wife had no issues.  Has anyone done this w/ Marriott?  How long do I need to wait to do this again?  I could just switch brands and I might just end up doing this.  Which one is the best as far as cc bonus pts?  I don't want to pay the annual fee for a cc and I don't like paying for hotels as I haven't in years.

your wife got lucky. chase is pretty strict about this and 5 years seems about right for them. every card issuer has different rules for this. citi used to be about every 3 months but they are all over the board right now. amex will tell you in the terms of each application how long it has had to be since the last application. barclays will basically let you get it as fast as you can apply for them.

this is about citi, specifically, but i think it's prolly good to know for retention-minded communications with other companies too.  tips from a former retention specialist.

citi is BITB at making shitloads of offers. just keep asking for other options until they are out and then pick the best one (or close the account if it's still not worth it).

Where is that @ feature? @Gooch needs to read this re: His SW card.

also, barclays seems to be BITB at fake threats. the other day a guy told me I would lose all the frontier points I had gotten from the card if I cancelled it. I was like, "no I won't". and he was like, "well, you could if they haven't all the way transfered to your frontier account". and I was like

barclays' customer service people have no idea what they're talking about.  i think they grab people off the street and hand them ringing phones.
