"Keita Bates-Diop - 2014 - G - Illinois Wolves
6-7 - University HS - Bloomington, IL

Marquette is the latest school to offer Bates-Diop joining KSU, Michigan, Illinois, Northwestern, Purdue, and Depaul.

This is mildly exciting.  That's about the most enthusiasm I can muster for basketball though.

My enthusiasm knows no bounds.

Of course, Asbury and Woolyball were both my idea of a good time, so I guess I'm biased.

With the offers we have out now, I'm hopeful we get one of those guys. Stars don't mean much to me, but what I do care about is players choosing us over other high major offers. That's why Pullen wasn't like some of the other 3 stars out there.

From Scout's Snow, Nairn has offers from KSU, Ole Miss, So. Miss, Oklahoma and is receiving interest from Indiana, Florida, DePaul, and Minnesota. Reports on Nairn and Custer from the Peach Jam pasted below:

"Lourawls Nairn, PG, MoKan Elite – The man simply known as “Tum-Tum”, Nairn had a very good game. He is an attack mode point guard, and he did just that. Nairn didn’t shoot one jump shot the entire game, but he can get to the bucket at will and has excellent speed with the basketball. Nairn’s play in the second half helped to spur a big MoKan run to stay in the game. If he can get a consistent jumper, he will be very difficult to defend."

http://scouthoops.scout.com/2/1204606.html

"Clayton Custer, PG, MoKan Elite – The best thing Custer does is shoot the basketball, and he did just that on Thursday evening. Custer knocked in multiple deep jumpers, and then also did a solid job of handling defensive pressure and running a team. He has a ton of confidence in his game, and uses that out on the floor to be a major factor."

Much better talent evaluation in high school basketball recruiting.  Stars mean more.  It's a crapshoot in football for the most part.

The dirty little secret of the Pullen 3* feel good recruiting story, ESPN actually had him ranked in their Top 100 for the Class of '07, 88th to be exact.

If only we could recruit a "Rocky" and a "Colt". Or assign those nicknames to current players.

So that is only, what, 50-70 spots too low? If you re-ranked them today, he is probably top 20 in that list...

Probably Top 30, there were some absolute beasts in that class.

They did have Tyrel Reed ranked ahead of him though, which was pretty universal.

I'll give ya that, I was thinking more of Pullen than anyone else when I made that statement. There's a reason Kentucky won the national championship with Coach Cal as their coach.

"Keita Bates-Diop - 2014 - G - Illinois Wolves
6-7 - University HS - Bloomington, IL
Bates-Diop got off to a slow start against LV Prospects, but really turned it on late with clutch shooting, which helped send the game into overtime. In double overtime, Bates-Diop hit the game winning shot to lift the Wolves to victory. When he asserts himself, Bates-Diop can get just about any shot he wants with his long frame. Bates-Diop had 24 points in the game."

Marquette is the latest school to offer Bates-Diop joining KSU, Michigan, Illinois, Northwestern, Purdue, and Depaul.

"Keita Bates-Diop scored a game-high 24 points for the Wolves in a 51-42 victory over Meanstreets in a 16U title game between Chicago-area teams."

"Bryson Scott had 19 points and Trevon Bluiett had 14 to lead Spiece. Already without Trey Lyles, resting after a long stretch of playing, Spiece was without JaQuan Lyle, who overslept. Lyle said he confused the title game tip time with the semifinal.
Lyle said he still plans to make an unofficial visit to Indiana in early August. He said he's going to talk with IU coach Tom Crean soon to firm up his plans."

In a bit of a downer for teamsleepin(I'm a proud member), it sounds like Lyle will NOT be accompanying Blueitt to visit KSU sometime in August. In another update, Lyle said he has plans to visit Louisville, Indiana, Illinois, Xavier, and Cincy.

"John Crosby (Team Melo 2014) – A big, physical point guard at 6’2” Crosby has an amazing feel for the game. He makes great decisions with the ball never panicking under pressure and seemingly always finding the open man. Crosby used smarts and a quick first step to get into the lane repeatedly and once there used a soft floater to score over the top of rotating bigs. Passing is always his first choice though and his drive and kick outs for 3 point attempts were the best offense for Team Melo in their afternoon win."

Another PG target in this class:

TEAM MELO’S JOHN CROSBY GAINING INTEREST

Baltimore’s Poly High School is not a traditional hotbed for high major recruits, but make no mistake about it, Class of 2014 guard John Crosby is a sure-fire high major prospect.

“I got Kansas State, Ohio State, North Carolina, Rutgers, Miami, a lot of Big East schools,” said Crosby on his interest from schools. “South Florida offered.”

Back in June Crosby took an unofficial visit to North Carolina and the interest from the Tar Heel program has him only working harder.

“That made me feel good,” said Crosby on hearing from UNC. “I just got to keep working hard, so it can be an offer one day and so I can be able to go to the school. It’s a great school and a great area.”

Poly HS is a great academic high school in Baltimore and Crosby is a tremendous student-athlete. He understands what it takes to play and succeed at the highest level and he will work hard to give himself every opportunity to make it happen.

“I just play hard and do whatever my coach needs me to do,” he said. “I’m a point guard who passes first. I’m a bigger guard so I can get it into the post and post some little guards up. I’m working on my jumper. I want to be able to do a pull up to make the game easier and just get my teammates involved. ”

Willard junior Chris Kendrix gets MAC offer; interest from other schools
Posted on August 2, 2012 by Matt Schoch

Willard High School incoming junior Chris Kendrix parlayed a nice summer with the MoKan Elite 16-and-under AAU team to some notice from some college coaches, and his first Division-I offer.

Kendrix was offered a scholarship from Miami (Ohio) during the summer and also has attracted interest from Kansas State, Missouri State and Colorado, he said Wednesday night.

Kendrix helped the 16-and-under Kansas City-based team to a 42-5 summer and championships in five tournaments. He was joined on the team by fellow area juniors Charlie Brown of Joplin and Kellieon Williams of Waynesville. Those two area also garnering Division-I interest, according to their MoKan coach, Jim Huber.

Kendrix is a 6-foot-5 wing who will be playing for first-year Willard coach Lamont Frazier, a former standout player at the University of Missouri, this winter.

For more on area standouts wrapping up the summer hoops AAU scene, check out Friday’s newspaper.

Joseph doing his thing, running the show over the past couple weeks:

"While the big guys were doing their thing in the lane, four-star point guard Kaleb Joseph was orchestrating it all from the point. The 6-foot-1 floor general has added a little more burst since we last saw him in the spring and is also finding a nice blend of getting his own offense and creating for others. "

http://kansasstate.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1390181

"Kaleb Joseph, SG/PG, Mass Rivals – The combo guard out of Ashburnham (Mass.) Cushing Academy used his speed and athleticism to making plays attacking the rim in both the half court set and in transition. Joseph also hit a three, worked in a mid-range pull-up and tossed in a floater."

http://scouthoops.scout.com/2/1206378.html

"Four-star point guard Kaleb Joseph from the class of 2014 has done a nice job playing a facilitating role in the backcourt. He's taking good care of the basketball and creating off the dribble to set up teammates for scoring opportunities while also using his length and quickness to guard the ball on the defensive end."

ESPN updates '14 rankings:

17. Lyle
30. Bates-Diop
32. Payton Dastrup(mention in a recent update, don't know if anything will come of it)
50. Blueitt
51. Austin

http://espn.go.com/college-sports/basketball/recruiting/playerrankings/_/class/2014/order/true

Other KSU '14 targets rated on ESPN:

Custer, rated at 84, 4*, looks like he just missed the cut for Top 60
Joseph     80, low 4*
Nairn       79, high 3*
Cimino     79, high 3*

stars matter but three stars is pretty much meaningless anymore in both football and bball.  There are some damn good three star kids with a bunch of offers and there are some crappy three star kids with no decent offers.   Saying a guy is a three star tells you nothing.  Four stars or higher and two stars or lower are meaningful.

I think ESPN is trying to flesh out those differences among their 3 stars with the numbered rating system. They're really the only major recruiting service that applies those numbered ratings to prospects. According to their system, any prospect rated 90 and above is given 5 stars, any prospect rated 80 and above is given 4 stars, any prospect rated 70 and above is given 3 stars, etc.

Based on their scale, a prospect rated at 79 such as Cimino and Nairn, is considered to be a better prospect than 1 rated at 70, even though both are given 3 stars.

Without the numerical ranking system, the importance of reading scouting reports and paying attention to offer/interest lists is magnified, if you're interested in trying to evaluate prospects.
