that free agent list was a little slim.   :frown:  but i still tentatively think they should let butler, aoki and shields go.  get a cheaper starter and a genuine bad ass dh (ideally one that could play on the field at third or of as well) and go defense in the of with dyson.

maybe melky?  not a lot of great names that jump off that list.  but also i hardly know any players that don't play for the royals.  maybe some of the names are good and i just don't know it.

I don't think the Royals are going to find a cheaper starter that could crack their rotation.

take shields and chen out and they only have four pitchers.  even if you pencil in zimmer and finnegan (which seems hugely optimistic), you still need at least one more guy.

anyone know how much santana will likely get this year?
Probably over $15m. Two effective seasons in a row and 4 out of 5 for a pitcher whose knock was inconsistency. He got $14.1 this year.

give him 30 for 2.  boom, shields is replaced.  now go get melky.
Signing Santana instead of BGJ doesn't help you with getting Melky though

sign shields if you can.  13 mil is fine.

i mean, i'd be willing to sign him for even less than that.

i don't think shields is willing to take a short-term deal.  i'd get shields if possible, but i don't think it's possible (for a sane team).

you can pay melky with chen+butler+aoki money.

I don't know that Santana would take a short term deal now either. Perhaps, but he shouldn't at this point.  Melky only made $8m this year. Nori made 1.9 with bonuses that could get to 3. What do we think they will get next year? $11 and $4?

I'm probably irrational, but I believe there is value in the fact that a) Shields has been here and helped turn this franchise around and b) he's clearly one of the biggest leaders in this clubhouse. I'm not sure what things like that are "worth", but I think they have value. Sure, you could bring in a new guy and it might transition just fine, but it also could blow up in your face. :twocents:

ive never been more confident that a guy like james shields will NOT blow up in our face. hes too big of a competitor and hes got plenty of talent. hes a safe bet and we should get him if we can.

$11 and $4?

if 11 is all melky would cost, then they should sign him up right now.  how much is victor, btw?  just to know.

every pitcher is a risk to blow up in your face.  they're not bad people, it's their arms you can't trust.  giving long-term, big money deals to pitchers is like playing russian roulette.

Agree. Plus he has the best peripheral numbers (i.e: important for predicting future performance) on the team. Age is a bit of a concern, but he is 32 not 38. Quite a few pitchers are still effective at that age.

anyone who thinks we should get rid of nori can gtfo of this thread now.
get rid of? Absolutely not. Dyson should be the everyday right fielder tho

get out.

Dyson is perfect as a 4th outfielder. He can start when needed, be a defensive replacement, a pinch runner, and the everyday centerfielder for that stretch where Cain gets hurt every year. Aoki proved skeptics like me wrong. If not Aoki they need to bring in another everyday RF, and keep Dyson as the 4th OF.

I would be okay with keeping Willingham as DH/RF unless Billy takes a major pay cut.  Dunn would be fantastic though.  Shields is dumb to resign with the Royals when he can go get a lot more money elsewhere.  Starting pitcher for the number 1 spot they are going to have to spend a little money for Santana or Peavy, or Hammel.  Hopefully recent success will entice someone to come to KC for a couple years.
