Hey guys,

MOOSE

ISO .190 - He's hitting for more power than he ever has.
BB% 8.2 - He's walking more than he ever has.
FB% 46.7 - He's hitting a lot of fly balls.
HR/FB 11.6 - He's hitting more of those fly balls over the fence than he ever has.
BABIP .189 - He's been unlucky (his BABIP has gone down each year tho  :frown:)

He's been the Royals best hitter over the last month.

If there was a gif of nicname thwarting the attempted-flag-taker and then gesturing him to suck it, followed by motioning for all of Hilton Shelter to boo him louder, it'd be better than that auburn gif.

Yeah, the shift has not helped his BABIP. I don't think he'll ever be an average opposite field hitter, but if he can be slightly below average instead of terrible, then we should see that BABIP start to go up.

Pretty dumb of me not to think about the shift and his BABIP.

The Royals signed Joe Saunders, keeping in line with their "pretend like it's 2008" approach to acquiring players.

As Gus Sinski says in For Love of the Game, "You know, a lot of little bottles makes a big bottle, Chappy." I think people get frustrated because Dayton Moore is constantly throwing away a million here and a couple million over there on washed up players or journeymen, instead of realizing that he has a small pool of resources that should be guarded jealously, so that when the opportunity presents itself to snag a player that could actually help the team, then he would have the cash to make a move.

I like the Ibanez and Saunders moves.  The only glaring issue I see right now is at DH.

Who specifically, have we missed out on because of signing washed up players and journeymen?

Would have had to cut Hoch before the season (people can say that's hindsight, but lots of us Royals fans were calling for that move to be made), but without Hoch/Chen/Maxwell/Ibanez/Saunders/Downs on the books then we could have afforded Phil Hughes before the season or Ben Zobrist now...with a couple million left over. Obvs would have to give up something for Zobrist, but I don't think we'd have to give up a lot. Either of those players would have given us more than the aforementioned players have given us this year combined.

We're not paying the full salaries on Ibanez/Saunders/Downs I think. You're probably right about Hoch but there's no guarantee we could've acquired Hughes or Zobrist. Zobrist wasn't a free agent, so the ability to get him would've been up to the Rays willingness for a reasonable trade. I agree that we shouldn't load up on journeymen in the offseason, but Ibanez/Downs/Saunders are in season band aids and aren't really affecting off season acquisitions for us IMO.

I think they want to fully find out what Ibanez has left in the tank.

My problem is that they're usually band aids that aren't as good as what we currently have, so what is the point of bringing them in at all? Ibanez is the worst hitter/fielder on our team, Saunders has an ERA over 6 and his peripherals are worse than that, and Scott Downs threw a decent couple of innings for us but had been a disaster for the White Sox this year. Why would we pay these guys ANY money, when theoretically that money could go to someone in the future who is good at baseball?

Saunders is going to Omaha. We won't see him unless a starter gets hurt. He sucks but so did Guthrie when we got him. Ibanez? He'll be gone after the ASG IMO if he doesn't start hitting fast. It really is a no risk kinda thing.

This idea that if we don't spend money now, we'll have so much more in the future is kinda bonkers. We've never operated that way.

let's smash this loser Hellickson's face apart so his mother couldn't recognize him after we're done dropping 8 runs on him in 2 and 1/3

I don't have any illusions about that money carrying over to next year (I was referring to a very near future, like the ASB), but Dayton has a set amount of money he's allowed to spend every year, and he routinely spends it like a dumbfuck. I guess that's my point, and signing these guys is probably the least of all his evils when it comes to wasting money, it's still wasted money though.

I'm being kind of a downer, I'll cut that out. The Royals are going to whoop ass this week and take over the division lead by the ASB  :Woot:
