The announcement is for a trade...not the vargas signing....I think billy is gone

Kansas City Royals ?@Royals 2m

The #Royals have signed free agent LHP Jason Vargas to a four-year contract. Vargas was 9-8 with the Angels last season.

This is what was confusing me. We're waiting on a physical for a trade. Yet we announce a free agent signing (an hour before the real announcement - hopefully).

Didn't someone say the announcement is supposed to be at 4pm?

So..poor timing. Moore could not comment. He did say physical. If it is Vargas, then my mistake, FA physical.

Okay, I was wrong.

If they want to compete for a playoff spot, yes.

Cause it's totally reasonable to expect the Royals to pay someone like that.

Vargas' numbers are very similar to Santana's. Were you guys really expecting Santana to duplicate is 2013 stats next year?

Thank you to all the twins fans the last 2 seasons but I'm happy to sign with the Kansas City Royals now. Looking forward to a great season

He's not. Pretty sure about that. RT @zowen13 Look at PJ Walters' twitter feed. Let's hope he's not the reason for the big announcement.

I'm a Twins fan and I had to Google this guy.

Hopefully we can get 5 innings out of him per game and then leave it up to the bullpen.

By numbers, are you referring to meaningless W/L?  Cause Santana's real numbers were obviously better with 60 more innings as well.  And he's had the numbers he had last year 3 out of the last 4 seasons.

They could absolutely throw 5/75 at a pitcher. Only way this offsets the loss of a legitimate #2 starter is if they throw money at RF or 2B and hope the offense somehow becomes respectable.

In a vacuum I like the signing, but only as a Chen replacement, not your #2 starter.

Sherzer/Shields
Verlander/Vargas
Sanchez/Guthrie

Thats who we're chasing. So, uh, lets hope Duffy or Ventura are the real deal.

Hopefully we can get 5 innings out of him per game and then leave it up to the bullpen.

He pitched at least 6 innings in 42 out of 57 starts over the past two seasons - 73.6%

Santana went 6+ in 48 out of 63 over the past two seasons - 76.2%

Jason Vargas and Ervin Santana are pretty much the same pitcher statistically.

http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/royals-sign-jason-vargas/

this is exactly where i am

This can’t be the Royals big off-season move. Vargas fills a hole with the expectation of reasonable performance, but he doesn’t really make them better than they were, especially since he’s replacing Ervin Santana. They’re going to have to find other ways to upgrade if they want to become a contender. But this is also a decent enough contract for a decent enough pitcher to make sure that they don’t throw away their season by handing a rotation spot to a total scrub. Jason Vargas might not raise the Royals ceiling all that much, but he does raise their floor. And there’s value in that kind of transaction.
