CF3's all time Royals defensive team:

C Sal Perez
1b Wally Joyner (dug out one hops better than Hos, less range, but overall better imo)
2b Jose Offerman.........Just kidding. Frank White of course!
SS Greg Gagne
3B Brett
LF Gordon
CF Beltran
RF Amos Otis

P Greinke

 :nono:

Are we counting his seasons in Minny, or just the 3 in KC? It's still early but Esky is a better SS. Always among the league leaders in web gems...

Just KC. I'd understand arguments for Esky or Gagne. Bell? No. He was good but not spectacular. i picked Gagne because Esky still has plenty of errors.

And is still very young

Jermaine Dye was pretty good in RF. I know nothing about Amos Otis though. it sucks we've barely had a + SS.

Forgot about J Dye! I never saw Otis but he had 3 gold gloves so I figured I had to include him. Only AO, Gordon, and White have multiple gold gloves in KC

Freddie Patek probably needs to at least be in the convo for all-time Royals' defensive shortstop.

BTW, Neyer's Royals' "Gold Glove" lineup (from 2003), was:

C Sundberg
1B Joyner
2B Frank
SS Patek
3B Pryor (!)
LF Willie
CF Amos
RF Jermaine
SP Sabes

william wilson.

Yeah, OF is really hard now. Neyer had him at LF. But as a guy who's watched Otis, Wilson, Beltran, and Gordon all make spectacular plays live for the Royals in the OF, it's a tough call to whittle that down to 3. I guess maybe I'd go with Otis, Wilson, and Gordon, since Beltran never won a GG as a Royal. Probably should have, but probably have to get arbitrary to cut it down to 3.

Beltran is the best defensive outfielder in Royals history. Unfortunately for him, Tori Hunter and Ichiro dominated the GG awards when he was playing for us. Patek was I'm sure a fine defender, and most of our Dads probably love his abilities, but he was like 5' 3" and I can't imagine he was better than Gagne or Esky at short. Remember, the awards for GG go in cycles and when Gagne was in KC, it was Vizquel and Ripken winning the awards.

Wilson? Maybe, but I don't recall him having the arm of Otis, Gordon, Dye, or Beltran.

No.  The Royals should sign an OF or a 2b.  The pitching will almost surely be worse, but the offense needs to take a major step forward.  The price on Santana will be too high a price.  I made a liste below of a number of free agents that I would rather have based upon the price.

For $60 million over 5 yrs the Royals could improve dramatically.  Choose your own adventure below and compare it to Ervin Santana.

Offense:
Sign Carlos Beltran- 2 yr x12m = $24 million
Sign Omar Infante-  3 yr x$4m = $12 million

AND sign at least one starter:

$$$-all in moves
Ubaldo Jiminez - 3 years $35 million (might get priced out of this one)
Hiroki Kuroda - 1 year $20 million (an all-in move to prevent him re-signing w/ Yanks, retiring or going to Japan)
Jason Vargas - 3 years $33 million (lefty, young, reliable, least upside)

$$- tweeners
A.J. Burnett - 2 yr $20 million
Bronson Arroyo - 2 yr $25 million

$-lotto tickets
Jon Garland - $1 million
Edinson Volquez - 1 yr = $6 million or 3 yr x $5 million = $15 million
Josh Johnson - 1 yr x $9 million

I typed up a long analysis and lost it because I timed out.

tl;don't want to re-type:

MLBTR did a FA analysis.  I was underestimating most of the free agents, but it looks like I nailed Bronson Arroyo's value.  They don't have predictions for Carlos Beltran, Hiroki Kuroda or A.J. Burnett.

If we don't give Ervin a qualifying offer, DM should be fired.

We will. Qualifying is only a one year deal if I recall correctly.

If we trade Butler and don't upgrade the lineup seriously somewhere our offense will be so bad we'll be a below .500 team

Just based upon the returning starting pitching and the probability that the bullpen regresses .500 looks likely.  The offense needs to be actively upgraded as is, losing Butler would be a disastrous start considering the likely return, but I'll wait to condemn a prospective trade until at least the ink is dry.

No chance the pitchers are ever as good as they were this year.   Our offense is terrible and the GM and coaches are atrocities.   Our young players will never improve.  eff the team and especially eff the front office.   BID.
