Acquired Drew Butera, not really sure why but they didn't give up anyone important either so :dunno:

Defensively good, but can't hit at all.

Yea, seems like they have about 10 of those guys in the minors  so not sure why another was needed

our starters suck, but it's because they suck, not because they don't throw enough innings.

exactly. my point is we need them to suck a little less for a little longer. I'm much more comfortable hoping for this than hoping to have success with 4 innings of bullpen for the first time in major league history (I'm assuming it would be the first time but someone can do some stats and prove me wrong here). the starters sucking a little less has much better odds of happening.

i mean, the starters should suck a little less, because no staff has ever sucked this much for an entire season.  but regarding the bullpen use - just look at the numbers.  no one is talking about running hdh out there for 350 innings (really, dh have very defined roles and are not going to get overused unless the royals win about 120 close games, the only one that might get overused is herrera, and that's just a yost issue, not a starters suck issue), it's just a matter of using some of the pitchers that on most teams normally sit on the bench for weeks at a time and maybe pitch 30 innings a year.  use those guys a little more and the starters a little less.

no idea if any team has every used a pen for 4 innings a game before, but i can calculate the innings needed and see that it wouldn't strain this pen at all.  maybe it'd strain the pen's rep, since people aren't going to be talking about how it's the best pen in history when pino, morales, finnegan, frasor, etc are combining for 250 innings, but would you rather have those guys eating a few more innings or the shitty starters hitting their third time through the batting order every time out?

No other team has ever had as many studs in the pen as the Royals have. It seems more likely that they will keep on being the studs that they are than it is that the starters will just wake up one day this season and become better pitchers. I thought the same about our batting over the offseason, though, and those guys got a whole lot better, so who knows?

I wasn't wondering if a team had used a pen for 4 innings a game, I was saying I don't believe one has ever had success doing it. our bullpen averaging 4 innings a game would be about equal with our starters being shitty for 6 innings a game if I'm choosing between all options. both are scenarios where we aren't in a playoff race.

The only unconventional pitching rotation I can think of recently is the Rockies trying a 4 man rotation (which Guts was part of) in 2012.

Quote
There would be four starters on a 75-pitch count and four "hybrid" pitchers, trained starters limited to 50 pitches. Two pitchers, in essence, would be asked to perform the previous job of a starter — get the team as deep as possible into a game.

They scrapped it after the season. They went to it after starting 25-40 to start the year. They finished 64-98, so they went 39-58 using the 4 man rotation.

we're not talking about anything so innovative.  just planning on using your starter 5-6 (with the occassional knocked out in the 2nd and hopefully slightly more common lasts 7-8) instead of planning on 6-7.  an extra 150 innings for the pen.  not that big of a deal.
