My main concern with Vargas is 19.2 innings through 4 starts.

warm weather pitcher

Vargas walked like a bunch of guys tonight.

it was also in the mid forties w/ mid thirties wind chill and he won't pitch with sleeves. also five walks (tonight) is the most he's ever ever given up. also the royals won 6-2.

I'm really happy the Royals won. Gordon is looking great, Moose is a stud, the bullpen rules, etc. etc. etc. However I don't think its unreasonable to be concerend that Vargas is going to get roughed up again soon. Cleveland just refused to take advantage.

Posse stat of the night =
19 games into the year, Moose had his 8th multi hit game.   He had 17 all of last year

Vargas has been average at best so far.   That said, he was one Moose defensive play away in that Minn game last week from having 3 of his 4 starts allowing 2ER or less.

sure he'll get roughed up again sometime soon, he's an average mlb 4th starter. i still think he'll have a better year than jg.

Let's talk midseason poaching of garbage teams' pitchers. I would take Johnny Cueto of course but let's not forget about Cole Hamels and his perfect cheekbones. Did you see what he did to the cardinals tonight?

Do we have any stud prospects to trade for one?

It's not just the BB board. KSU Cat men's basketball in general is depressing.

Royals are a completely different story.

Vargy looked like crap last night (though only giving up two runs).  I'm going to hold on to the excuse right now that he sucked because it was too cold and he couldn't get his grip on the ball.

you know when he is pitching that he's going to give up 2-3 runs and that you need to have your middle relief ready by the 5-6th before he gives up another 2-3 runs.
seems like he's pretty consistent in that respect.  his look of confusion each game when it happens is painful to watch.

5ip and 2r is a good outing for Vargas. Sure he walked a lot of guys, but he also only gave up 3 hits and worked his way out of some jams.

With the depth and quality of our pen I'll take 5ip/2r from Vargas and Guts every time. Ned should let them go thru the order twice and then replace them with Young or Pino for a couple of innings before getting to the backend guys.

Good points.

Even when Vargas and Guts don't have their best stuff, they generally seem to give up fewer runs than it seems like they should. To be fair, while I'm complaining about Vargas not getting us 6, its not like Duffy is doing much better. I'm also more cautions on Vargas and Guts so far because their walks are up and strike outs are down, but maybe we can chalk that up to cold weather starts.

The fact that they can't miss bats is a huge issue. If they aren't getting borderline calls they will either get smashed or walk a ton. Both have happened just about every start this year. Hitters will adjust to their slop a time or two through the order.

The stats Fox Sports showed for batting average against Vargy 1st, 2nd, and 3rd time through.   :sdeek:  We should just pull him after the 2nd time through and avoid the upcoming HR blast.

there is some chatter that mlb is attempting to shrink the strike zone a little to boost offense. neither vargas or guthrie have great stuff and both live on the corners. also, in addition to giving up more walks the royals are also drawing more which could be another data point for a smaller strike zone this year.

Bro, do you even Zimmer, Dwyer, Finnegan, Manea?

Also, eff Cole Hamels and his 86 mph fastball. Big Train would probably post a sub 4 era in the NL East.

Also, weird timing to downplay errors considering that bad errors were the difference in each of the last two games.
