i think i would have run gore there.  salvy isn't worth more than the backup at the plate.  ventura doesn't bury a ton of pitches.  so it's mostly just a matter of his pitch calling.  i think i'd have given that up for the chance to move gore along the bases.

agree with carnes.  you don't want to push ventura, the bottom seems to fall out of him so fast at 90-100 pitches or so.

they have two turn a runner on first into a runner on 2nd cards in their pocket.  it's a shame not to use them.  a run in the fifth is worth the same a run later.  who knows if they'll even have another slow runner on first no outs oppy.

the value of waiting for a later oppy to me is nil, that's a silly argument.  the question is how much is salvy worth on d vs gore instead of him on first.

bunting trades off the chances of a hit in order to advance runners.  putting in gore does not sacrifice anything offensively, the only sacrifice is defensive.  it's really not comparable at all.
