There is no time when you should absolutely take the 1st pitch, unless the pitcher has walked a couple in a row. If the batter gets the pitch he wants to hit, he should swing. Billy should've taken that pitch because those bottom of the zone pitches are not good for him, but he shouldn't have taken because its the 1st pitch for that reason alone.

I think he swung because of coaching. I agree that you shouldn't just take that pitch.

One of the stupidest things I used to hear from coaches when I umpired was "take until you get a strike". Guess what coach, 1st pitch is now a strike unless it bounces.

I think he swung because his bat speed is slower, and he has to guess before the pitch is thrown, and anticipated something up in the zone.

We are going to need to win about the same number of games to get the wildcard as it is going to take to win the division, since we are going to have to beat the tigers a couple of times to get either.
