billy on the bench isn't necessarily playing it safe. maybe ned's just giving billy a chance to save up a bunch more double plays to hit into.
Pretty sure Billy has hit into fewer double plays than Hos, Moose, and Salvy this season...

Pretty sure Moose was sent to the minors at one point, Hosmer has about half as many double plays, and Salvy is one of the top defensive catchers in baseball.
Hosmer does get special treatment, and it's bullshit, but there isn't some unobtainable standard people want Billy to meet. The standard is to be better than Willingham, and he just isn't.
