I find it interesting that it doesn't split on the seam. Fine stitching there.

An official baseball is made of a rubber core wrapped with lots of thin yarn. Cheaper practice baseballs and t-balls are filled with the composite stuff in that photo. A real baseball would probably wind up looking like a flat string pancake if it was crushed like that...you wouldn't get the cool "gooey" stuffing oozing out effect.

You have the right idea for that devices intended purpose, referencing Upton Sinclair.   Fortunately, thats not the floor you see around the opening, its the base of a chute...
