Looks like it was above that for about 10 year?.

None of the levels are considered to be harmful.  It's a scare.gif type thing.

Scientists have detected radioactive elements from the stricken Fukushima nuclear power plant in seawater and marine organisms as far as 600km from Japan. However, this radioactivity has not been deemed dangerous, they said.

"Just because we can measure radioactivity doesn't mean it's harmful," WHOI's Ken Buesseler said. "There's a pretty good news story in here - that the levels [of radioactivity] offshore are not of significance to human health in terms of exposure, or even if you were to eat the seafood offshore."

Radioactivity readings in the seawater across the track ranged from less than 3 Bq per m3 up to 4,000 Bq per m3.

The maximum of these readings is about 1,000 times what could be measured in the water under normal conditions but they were about one-tenth the levels generally considered harmful, Buesseler noted, AP reports.

uh...no.

this is the radioactivity from the cesium fart, all in addition to the  background. I just was giving that number for a sense of scale. To approximate this radioactivity data into a dosage for a person is alot more complicated. Double the normal background levels isn't major, you get alot more flying in a plane or when the dentist aims his death ray at your head.

the really dark colors around japan would have been devastating, tho for sure.

over the length scale presented in the graph with the concentrations that were immediate in the waters around the coast japan, and the extent of fishing in that region, it's a pretty big deal. they are routinely catching fish off the coast will 250X the acceptable upper limit of radiation. this is going to have a big impact of japan's economy.
