i've been to a couple of his wine dinners he's been doing recently in kc.  some of his stuff isn't bad, none of it's that great.

Tell me more. Dick Vermeil is my favorite person in the world. Would love to attend one of these.

Let's just say the Vermeil residence in Coatesville, PA, has blocked my cell #, and that Carol gets angry if you call after the cut off time (about 10 p.m.)  :D

i think his wine is ok, but some of it really isn't.

Also want him to diagram a play on a napkin or something.

I bet many coaches could make a pretty fun second career doing exactly this.

I contacted his agent four years ago and tried to get a reduced rate. The price they list at those sites isn't the actual price for many of the "celebs," and I doubt many groups are ponying up $40k to listen to Dick Vermeil speak.

I will say, though, that Vermeil could easily justify that rate since he'll inspire a room full of people and instantly turn them into hard-working, successful bad asses that can dominate whatever profession they choose.

Unless their profession is defensive in nature.

I like wine, but I've determined I will not learn to like the good stuff. I did that with beer and there's no going back to crap like bud light. I like cheap wine right now, and as long as I don't start trying more expensive stuff it will stay that way.

don't let fake wine snobs intimidate you.  you can find perfectly enjoyable wine for under $10 a bottle (actually, you can find it for under $5), even in the us.

under $5?  no.  under $10?  yes but you have to have the baseline foundation/knowledge to find the good ones in a sea of crap.  $10-$15, hot spot.

My dad owns a bar in New York and has about 10 beers on tap, and there's also two wine dispensers that are labeled "chardonnay" and "white zin." I have heard several customers comment that the chardonnay is "excellent."

That always catches me off guard.

"You've never drank box wine?" I ask them.

Them: "Yes, I have. But it's disg...wait...is this Franzia?!?"  :horrorsurprise:

Me:

under $5?  no.

big house red in the 3l box.  you can usually get it for $18/box or so.  it's not as good as when grahm ran bonny doon, but for $4.50, i'll drink the crap out of that stuff.

there's other bargains around, including some of the other octavin boxes.  but i'm not really exploring much else as long as i can get this wine at this price.

For the record, my standards are somewhere between Macaroni Grill Pinot Grigio and some no-name box wine (also pinot grigio  ).
