I don't think we could have beaten Denver's money offer, I think we could have matched it.  As far as championship potential, the fact that the Chiefs have been a pretty miserable failure of an organization for most of Manning's career has to factor in somewhere.  I agree that we have more high-talent players, but last year showed us the criminal lack of depth the Chiefs have.  Our depth would in no way improve with Manning providing a 20-25MM cap hit.

If the Chiefs would have released Cassel when they signed Manning, they could have paid him $30 million per season and taken less than a $20 million cap hit.

FWIW, Cassel's cap hit is $7.5MM for 2012, so lets say we can pay $27.5 for Manning.  We'd still have to cut roughly $19 million to get to the cap of $120.6 million.  Where is that coming from?  Say we only pay Manning $20 million, we still have to cut $12 million in addition to unloading Cassel's contract.  I wanted Manning really bad, but I don't think we would be a better team in the end if we had signed him.

They would only have to cut about $3.5 million to get under the cap because they are currently $16.54 million under it. You are correct that the Chiefs would have to make sacrifices into the future to account for salary increases, though. I think it would be worth it because Manning would make the Chiefs a contender today, and the Chiefs just do not have any semblance of a franchise QB. I also don't think they are going to be able to draft one and have him ready to win before this team is too old. I would rather see them cash in to win today and then rebuild in a few years by actually drafting a QB in the first round.

I can understand why Pioli would balk at paying Manning a huge contract. I just don't agree with him.

Where do you see us being under by $16.54?  Serious question, everything I've seen has us only a couple million under.  And yeah, I think we're mumped unless Cassel has a great year.  The window is closing fast.

Well mainly cause he rehabbed there over the years, but all I was saying is location doesn't hurt. He looked at Miami too, are they a contender?

If Manning wouldn't take calls, Pioli should have had a special cell iPhone fabricated out of $1M dollar bills, had it hand delivered to Peyton on a red satin pillow, while some other gentleman, dressed in a tux, handed him $100 dollar bills as swiftly has he could with both hands while Manning answered the custom iPhone made of $1M dollar bills to hear what Clark had to say.

In such a world, mountains don't exist let alone sway decisions.

Also, with no other changes, our offense would be top 3 in the league with Peyton this year.

You're all wrong.  Manning didn't come to the Chiefs because he didn't want to have to compete with anybody else for the starting position.

We all know that Cassel would have beat out that old, broken fart box for the job.  Peyton didn't want to take that chance, so he went to Denver, where he just had to beat out rough ridin' Caleb Hanie.

Manning doesn't care about the fact Denver is a top-15 media market, the money, etc. He's already a national celebrity. It came down to winning tradition -- an owner and a front office -- who are committed to winning. A culture in the organization that backs it up. Anyone without an elite-level QB already on their roster could have put the money together to field a competitive offer. Comfort with the chances of going out on top for a premier franchise made the difference. Living in white people paradise didn't hurt, but it was the franchise and the people around him that made the difference. Elway may be new to the job but he's not rough ridin' around, either. He, Bowlen and Fox expect to win, not hope.

One of these things is not like the other ones:

Manning
Palmer
Rivers
Cassel

Ooh, nice outfit. What is that, Dacron?

And fwiw to you chefs fans, I think the division belongs to you this season. Manning adjusting to a new team (and they to him) along with the toughest schedule in football will probably be too difficult to overcome. Rebound year for Cassel and I think the division is theirs; Broncos miss the playoffs and come back with a Superbowl appearance.

Fair enough. Unsure of what your point is, though. You can see Elitch Gardens, the 455th-ranked amusement park in the U.S., from Mile High Stadium, where the Denver Broncos play, the team chosen by the biggest free agent in NFL history. Tebow used to play there, too.

The Broncos were nothing before Elway and have been nothing since. They seem more committed to running off their best players than winning, though they will be very good with Manning.

Also, if money doesn't matter, then why are the Broncos paying him so much?

No one said he would play for free, they said the difference in the salary didn't matter.  As long as Denver was willing to pay him a competitive salary, then he didn't care that someone would pay him more.

Yeah, I was saying the Chiefs should have offered him enough to make the Broncos' offer uncompetitive.

Good defense, good running game.  Sounds like the kind of place I'd like to play if I were an elite level quarterback.  I realize the same thing could be said about KC, except KC hasn't won a playoff game since I was a virgin.
