Help me michigancat!
« on: July 08, 2010, 10:51:01 AM »
OK, so every summer, there's a free summer concert series in Brooklyn with bands that I haven't heard of until just after I've missed the show.  Anyway, which of these shows will be the ultimate best?

7/11: Deer Hoof & Xiu Xiu performing Joy Division's Unkown Pleasures, Why?, Fang Island & Pictureplane
7/18: Murder City Devils, Obits, Jeff the Brotherhood & Silverghost
7/25: Cap'n Jazz, Lightening Bolt, No Age (I've heard of them) & The Death Set
8/8: Cut Copy, Memory Tapes, Glasser & Restless People
8/15: !!!, Lee Fields, The Strange Boys & Future Islands
8/22: Chromeo, The Suzan & Telephoned
8/29 [unnamed top band], Delorean (I've heard of them) & Dominique Young Unique

The first one looks good, but it might be too damn hot this weekend.  HELP, please!

Not sure when mcat will get to this, but pretty sure he'd go with the one featuring a Delorean (presuming there isn't a kenpom concert you failed to mention that would trump all).

OK_Cat's opinion:  When in doubt, go with "unnamed top band."  You never know.

Plus, it's the same week as Delorean.  A consensus is definitely forming.  BUT, I still want to hear from the man himself.

My can't miss would be Lee Fields, especially if he's playing w/ some of the Dap Kings (like he is here:)

Strange Boys are completely different, but could be interesting.  They actually caught my ear last night w/ this:

And I've heard !!! is really good live, but haven't seen them.

That show definitely has the most variety and my favorites.

Thanks!

So, I will definitely go to the 8/15 show, but this is the one I might invite friends to.

I'd highly recommend going to all of them ... except maybe take the night of the Murder City Devils off.  I'd pick either Cut Copy or Cap'n Jazz as "not to be missed." Cut Copy is absolutely brilliant live, and Cap'n Jazz are legendary ... but if you've never heard of them, then I guess they aren't.

So has this series taken the place of the McCarren Pool concerts? Those were such a blast, hope the new venue is half as enjoyable.

Avett Bros and Girl Talk tix in KC just went on sale and odds are slim/none that I can hit both.  Anybody checking either of these out.  I'm leaning to Avett because of the venue (Crossroads) doesnt seem to be the best for GT.

Great info, thanks!  Yeah, this is the Pool Party, but moved to the waterfront.  I actually like the new venue better, but most say they prefer the pool (which is now being converted back into a real pool).  Brooklyn IQ through the roof here.

Dudes, Chromeo live is really damn fun.

Also really enjoyed Future Island.  It's SO brilliantly 1987-esque.

That is all.  I missed most of the other bands this summer...
