Facing a projected $7 billion shortfall in 2011, the troubled US Postal Service is looking at dramatic changes to save money, including changing to 5 day service and raising postage rates. The new proposed rates for DVD mailers would increase by 7%, and according to NewTeeVee's calculations, the increase could cost Netflix $50 million or more in increased postage costs (Netflix spends more than $600 million per year on postage). The price increase would not go into effect until next January, if approved by the Postal Regulatory Commission.

Netflix's Andy Rendich recently testified before the Senate about the challenges the US Postal Service faces, and Rendich noted, "As such, we believe that the impact of a change in delivery frequency on our subscribers and our business would be relatively small."

Rendich on a rate increase: "We believe that additional rate increases necessary to cover the Postal Service's retiree health funding obligation will unnecessarily impact businesses and consumers that utilize the Postal Service. Companies like Netflix will either have to bear the impact of this increase or pass that cost along to customers. In eithe rcase, we believe that these additional costs will only further exacerbate the challenges faced by the Postal Service -- making their products more expensive and further negatively impacting mail volumes."

The US Postal Service estimated in 2007 that hand-sorting DVD mailers from Netflix and Blockbuster was costing the US Postal service tens of millions of dollars in labor costs, and that number could grow to more than $30 million or more by 2010.

The Postal Service should be shut down ASAP.  Jeffy, agree?

Phased out... yes.  Until then, let the post office raise their rates to whatever they need to stay out of the red.  If that means $5 for a letter, then so be it.  (gotta get rid of that pesky tie to inflation first)

Just as with SSI and Medicare, you can't just stop them on a dime, otherwise you've created a vacuum.  The longer any gov't program has been in place, the longer it takes to phase it out.

Hmmm, now why would Netflix say dropping a day of service is no big deal but raising their prices would be a big deal. Hmmm... I wonder if dropping a day of service would be a financial bonanza for a company that would not only ship fewer DVDs but could also reduce its workforce because instead of having the warehouses open six days a week they'd only need to be open for five days.

As for shutting down the post office, that's a great idea for those that live in cities.  But UPS and FedEx don't deliver to people like my grandparents that live in the middle of nowhere. They'll take the package to the nearest post office and have them take it the rest of the way.

Netflix already does not operate on Saturdays, so I don't think it will effect them much. The only difference will be that movies they ship on Friday won't arrive until Monday.

USPS:  Sorry Netflix, we're gonna have to raise your rates.  It costs us 10s of millions to sort your deliveries by hand.
Netflix:  Doodz, we pay you like 600 million bucks every year!  WTF!?
USPS:  Yeah...and we're gonna need to go ahead and stop delivering on Saturdays too...
Netflix:  Dood!!  600 million fracking bucks a year!!!
USPS:  Yeah...and we're gonna need our stapler back too...

No kidding. Everyone receiving the USPS pension that is bankrupting them should be required to subscribe to Netflix, and not the cheap $10 a month package, either.

:jerk: here in a couple years you will only have DVDs mailed to you if you are behind the times....everything will be digital like it is already becoming.

You can not stream Blu Ray quality video, and you won't be able to in "a couple of years" either

I never get service on Saturdays. If I mail a movie out on Thursday, Netflix gets it on Friday. If I mail it out on Friday, Netflix does not receive it until Monday. Weird :dunno:

I just started a month trial of Netflix through my PS3 (and getting 1 dvd out at a time) and I'm totally hooked on it. Plenty of streaming options now available and I think the company recognizes that streaming is the future.

As for the postal service, f em.

I live in Garden City, but I think my distribution center is in Wichita (could be wrong). I looked into it and some centers operate on Saturday, while others do not. If you look at the Netflix FAQ, it says they do not ship on Saturdays, though maybe that is just outdated.

The Wichita center(s) distributes on saturdays.  I generally get my Friday returns processed and back by Monday.

Well, I don't know where my distribution center is, then. All I know is that I have never had a disk received or shipped on a Saturday.

You ever looked at your emails and checked what time they receive the discs?  They process mine at like freaking 3 AM.  Maybe the don't receive your early enough in the day?  :dunno:

I receive my emails from Netflix anywhere between 4 and 7 am when they receive a movie. Whenever I mail a movie back to them, they process it the very next day, unless I mail that movie to them on Friday. Then it doesn't get processed until Monday. It might be a problem with my post office. I've noticed that they pick the mail up out of my mailbox later on Saturdays. Maybe they do that on Friday also. Next Friday I'll try to mail out a movie directly from the post office and see if it gets received on Saturday.

Am I the only cheap bastard that thinks that the new additional $7.99 for streaming is a little exorbitant?

Are there any decent alternatives for PS3 users that I'm unaware of?
