UEFA Champions League Knockout Stage (FINALS)
« on: July 01, 2010, 09:09:43 AM »
 :runaway:

early round qualifiers for the minnows of European league football started this week

Quote
A trip to London next spring seems a far way off, with memories still fresh of FC Internazionale Milano's Madrid triumph over FC Bayern München. Yet the four first qualifying round participants – FC Santa Coloma, SP Tre Fiori, Birkirkara FC and FK Rudar Pljevlja – and the 32 teams waiting for them in the second, stood at the very threshold of "what is widely considered the best and most challenging club competition in the world", said Mr Infantino.

FC Santa Coloma handed forfeit defeat
Andorra's FC Santa Coloma have been handed a 3-0 forfeit defeat after their home UEFA Champions League qualifier with Birkirkara FC was postponed because of poor pitch conditions.

Yeah, you could probably just combine this with your other soccer thread and no one would care.

what is this?

european champions league started last week with some of the tiny countries' champions playing qualifying home and away matches.  only 4 teams are playing in this 1st qualifying round.  none of them will factor in the end.  it's like the play-in game to be the 16 seed in the ncaa tournament.

Malta champion, Birkabirka(sp?) won 4-3 yesterday to go thru with an 7-3 aggregate win: http://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsleague/clubs/club=62171/index.html

look on the right side of this page for setup of champions league early stages: http://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsleague/matches/index.html

some of the bigger clubs come in during 2nd round of qualifying: http://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsleague/matches/season=2011/round=2000115/index.html

3rd round qualifiers bring in teams who grabbed the last qualifying spot from leagues like England, Italy, Spain, France, Germany: teams like Tottenham, Sevilla (Fabiano ), Sampdoria, Werder Bremen.

group stages feature qualifying survivors and those who qualfied directly into the groups (champions & runner-ups of England, Spain, Italy, France and Germany)

motherland didn't get it done yesterday.  AIK 1-0 Jeunesse Esch.  still have a chance to advance next week when they take a goal deficit for the home match  :crossfingers:

Dinamo Zagreb, H Tel Aviv and Salzburg all but guaranteed spots in the next round with huge wins.

Birkirkara, one of 2 qualifiers from the first round, won their home leg 1-0.  :clapclapclap:

come on Young Boys! :)

tomorrow's games seem more intriguing than today's but Kiev/Ajax should be a good one to watch today.  hopefully YBB makes the return leg to Tottenham intereseting.

tomorrow we got Sampadoria/Werder Bremen and Sevilla/Braga

such a long buildup to group play (sigh)

DATELINE: BERN, Switzerland
THAM-hotSpurs just barely escape raping by Young Boys.  down 3-0 in first half they punch back to cut it to cut it to 3-2.  the London club should have no problem advancing needing only a 1 goal advantage at home next week.

previously in Young Boys news: Young Boys Wankdorf erection relief  :surprised:

UEFA Champions League play-off round
FC Salzburg (AUT) 2 v 3 Hapoel Tel-Aviv FC (ISR)

Rosenborg BK (NOR) 2 v 1 FC København (DEN)

FC Basel 1893 (SUI) 1 v 0 FC Sheriff (MDA)

AC Sparta Praha (CZE) 0 v 2 MŠK Žilina (SVK)

FK Partizan (SRB) 2 v 2 RSC Anderlecht (BEL)

BSC Young Boys (SUI) 3 v 2 Tottenham Hotspur FC (ENG)

SC Braga (POR) 1 v 0 Sevilla FC (ESP)

SV Werder Bremen (GER) 3 v 1 UC Sampdoria (ITA)

FC Zenit St. Petersburg (RUS) 1 v 0 AJ Auxerre (FRA)

FC Dynamo Kyiv (UKR) 1 v 1 AFC Ajax (NED)

updated w/ 1st leg results.  1st leg home teams on the left.  next week should be interesting w/ a lot of results up in the air.

the only game I watched from start to finish was the Bremen/Sampadoria game.  1st half was back and forth with no goals then 2nd half was filled w/ results.  Bremen scored early then scored a penalty about 10 minutes later.  ref gave a 2nd yellow some Italian dude for the foul in the box.  then they scored like 2 minutes later to make it 3-0.  a classy header late gave Sampadoria hope.  the eccentric Cassano was dissapointing for Sampadoria.  hoping for fireworks in the retun leg to Italy.  both these clubs would be in the group stage if they weren't drawn against each other.

wish i had a chance to watch the bremen game yesterday. thats the budesliga team that i tend to pull for

even without ozil, they supposedly looked good, and still have mertesacker and marin. could be a dangerous team in group stages
