have you guys considered doing drugs about it?

I basically have to. Otherwise I'm just doing things such as, but not limited to, practicing a conversation in my head. I have to have music or a podcast on nonstop or else I'm constantly replaying memories or potential conversations in my head. Weed makes it way worse, alcohol makes it way better. Mrs. Stevesie has an inner monologue, but it isn't as active as mine.

Pete Holmes has a great bit about this. The gist of it being "how do we know crazy people don't just have a super loud inner monologue?"

Sure!! It just makes me tell better jokes to the dog. Hilarious ones.

Oh, you mean those kind of drugs? No, but whatever helps people get through the day.

followup question: if so, how do you not kill yourselves? not being mean, but that seems very torturous. maybe it's not. I have no idea obviously.

This isn't a big problem for me because my inner monologue isn't telling me to kill myself. At least it isn't very often, and I tell it to shut its fat face when it does.

Suppose someone cuts you off in traffic and you silently think to yourself, "wtf is wrong with that guy?" Is that an inner monologue? Are there people who never do anything like that?

They don't think stuff? So either they say it out loud or they just stare blankly into a black void?

That's how I understand it, 33. Do you have any friends who have to say everything out loud? For instance, they're delivered their food at a restaurant, and they go (to themselves) "oh, it came with a pickle. I asked them to leave it off, hey that's okay. And...well, they forgot to add mayo. I'll ask if I can get some when they come back."

I've never understood people that seem to have no filter. Maybe it's because they have no inner monologue. ???

They're just not thinking before speaking. There is a helpful expression for this: "think before you speak"

I do not think words in my head unless I want to. I know what I'm thinking but it's not in words. unless I actively do the words in my head. I can replay a conversation I've had or a funny joke or practice for a speech in my head. but it doesn't just happen all the time for no reason.

No. There's no way there are people that have to say all thoughts out loud in order to think them.

I assure you they exist. My undergraduate degree in psychology from Kansas State University makes me an expert.

something I just whipped up on my own completely to help you all define it.

An inner monologue is the voice inside a person's head that narrates thoughts, processes emotions, or rehearses conversations. It can take the form of self-reflection, problem-solving, or internal dialogue where a person "talks" to themselves in their mind.

Do All Humans Have It?
No, not everyone experiences an inner monologue. Some people have a constant internal dialogue, while others think more in images, abstract concepts, or feelings rather than words. Research suggests that the presence and intensity of an inner monologue vary from person to person, influenced by factors like cognitive style, language development, and even neurological differences.

Yeah, that would be an outer monologue.

Are people with less of an inner monologue necessarily less capable of being deceitful?

Maybe this will help. Have you ever heard (or do you find relatable) the sentiment “I do my best debating in the shower”

So if you’re actually saying out loud your side of the argument then you’re a crazy person. If you’re just quietly going about taking your shower, then you have yourself an inner monologue right there.

it doesn't sound like crazy people only though. from what I've seen ITT just normal people do that. like, when I want to rehash a negotiation or something I consider what I should have said. but I don't like talk it out to myself or re-hash how it could have gone. but I also do consider those things and am aware of things I could have said or done differently. just different brains from what I'm reading.

like, I definitely know I should have said or done something differently. but I don't do the conversation. if that makes sense.
