But they are so intentionally misleading - inflated numbers, exaggerated narratives, lack of real receipts, vague details outside of the most outlandish, etc., that it's impossible for me to take anything they say at face value.

I've said this before but it just astonishes me that technology was created that can give you a sourced answer for almost any question in the world just by basically asking the sky and yet people are actually dumber because of it. It almost seems impossible.

I reflect on this phenomenon pretty regularly. At first, I thought this could mostly be explained by "fake news" being so intertwined with good information that people were simply unable to discern what is true from what is made up.

Interacting with the Daxes of the world for the past several years, though, it's become pretty apparent that the majority (if not the vast majority) of people simply do not care about objective truths. Instead, they only want their feelings validated. In the past, that tended to align with mainstream media and science because there was not much else to tether your "reality" to. But now that social media is so prevalent, you have these cottage industries set up exclusively to confirm whatever biases people are already leaning towards.

It's actually a big reason I search many things in either incognito mode or using *gasp* edge at work. It's not cause i'm looking up anything I want to hide from the work, more to hide from ads makes (google, and as i have found the biggest violator, facebook).

I have literally searched for "ABB breakers" in incognito mode, and then opened up facebook and i get ads on ABB breakers. They crap is so pervasive you cannot escape it. I search for a pair of shoes on amazon, google now shows me 2357234 ads for shoes. On and on and on.

So all it takes for you is to do something like "is donald trump a good president" and boy can you slip and fall down the well there depending on other things you got. it won't matter and you can't really make it out. They have ecosystemed everyone perfectly based on what they like. And then since we become so isolated and don't talk to each other in person it comes easy to dehumanize the other side and act like they're nothing but mindless brutes.
