Just started it.

Spent like 30 min doing what I thought was flying to the moon where my first mission was, only to realize that I needed to select the moon and select "travel".  LOL.

Other than that, it looks pretty great.

I like games where you can just do your own thing and don't have to do the missions...is that what this is?

I think I'm going to buy the big fancy new xbox later this month, and that game looks interesting.

So far yes.  The good thing about that is that, yes, there are missions, but many of them are small.  You can easily pick it up and play for 30-60min without an issue.

In the clips I've seen the npc's are really strange

I have been playing it for several days.  I really like it.  It’s definitely Skyrim/Fallout in space.  There is even more to it than that.
