Yeah, the higher you make that number the higher you have to make the per year salary and the other side of that buyout. Also having, a let's say a $10 million dollar payout for Tang to get out, won't deter anyone we'd be worried about poaching him, if they wanted him.

Giving your head coach a huge buyout because you are scared he's going to get poached is the easiest and most common way that athletic departments get stuck with underperforming coaches who had one or two good years but were never able to replicate it.

Yeah, contracts are really just risk-shifting mechanisms. The results of negotiations merely reveal how important certain risks are to the respective parties. This seems like a "try and buy" kinda situation where Tang stands to end up with a fat(ter) contract (and higher buyout) in a few years. But it's also a public endorsement by the University, and it projects stability for recruits.
