Also, I want to watch the competition so it isn’t a “shut up and play” so much as “no ethical consumption in capitalism” is going to cover me here but I still may say a few hail Mary’s and do some good deeds.

I just finished the fifa series on Netflix, it was okay. They didn't get the Blatter soundbite "I am the president of everybody" and it seems to be scrubbed from the internet, that's the true power of FIFA, they can make part of a press conference that happened 6 years ago, completely disappear.

Homosexuality is illegal in more than just Qatar. I think it is certainly different because they are hosting and the process that went in to it, but I don’t think grilling the players about their country’s politics is a good look. Most players politics suck crap! So just play, the coaches and the players mostly don’t have anything interesting to say about it even in the best of times.

As for Johnny Baby (Gianni Infantino) he can get both hands even though he isn’t the guy to blame for making the initial decision to go to Qatar.

As far as the announcers, of course they aren’t going to be talking about it! They are literally paid to make the whole thing a commercial! Even most of the journalists covering it will only be able to make a few events a circus before it is either tamped down or worse.

Of course the whole thing is a farce but expecting the system to have enough internal complexity to critique itself is to forget the fundamental problem that leads to the others.

I hear all that but there were other World Cup broadcasts at least acknowledged some of the...unique circumstances

And last thing on the play-by-play guys, there was a moment when they were talking about how interesting and rare it was to have Qataris and Ecuadorians and it was part of what made the World Cup so unique and it seemed like an in to say "hey this place and atmosphere is kinda weird".

I think we all agree that Fox shouldn't have ignored what happening there. It's noteworthy that your two video examples are not from people calling the game, I'm pretty sure the Telemundo guy isn't even in Qatar.

Iran's goalkeeper had a head injury and got treatment for a while in the 1st half. The 2nd half stoppage seemed unnecessary, I think it was just from all the goals and subs.

The broadcast said they are really going for it with "by the book" stoppage time getting added.

Got up at one point, changed uniform to get rid of the blood, teammate threw water on his face, they were about to resume and he went back down. Dude tried to make a go of it.
