Kansas City things
« on: August 23, 2022, 10:02:52 AM »
Hey friends, I’m going to be in Kansas City with my wife in a few weeks for a Friday-Sunday stay. I haven’t been to KC in like 15 years, and she’s never been.

What are some ‘must see’ things that show off KC? Suggestions for night life for a guy that likes to be in bed by 10? Local restaurants? We’ll do a little BBQ, but the wife isn’t big on it (I know, divorce is an option).

Ultimately we’re just there for a concert so anything else is bonus

Shinedown and Jelly Roll. I married someone quite a bit younger, so it’s a thing I deal with

We’re staying at an airbnb somewhere by the Power and Light District, apparently.

Keep in mind that she’s lived in a city of 15,000 people in southwest Oklahoma for most of her life, so it won’t be hard to impress

WW1 Museum is pretty fantastic.  You can also take her through Nelson-Atkins Museum and get a tourist picture in front of the shuttlecocks outside.  I also suggest going to Crossroads and enjoying micro brews from different EMAW brewers.  Walk through Union Station as it is a KC landmark and awesome thing to see.  Enjoy the new-ish street car to get you from City Market down to Union Station.

Have fun!

City Market does an art market out back on Sundays - Pigwich is right there and has great sandwiches if you're looking for something casual.  Grunauer is one of my favorite restaurants if you want to do something a little different (Austrian food)

Steamship Arabia museum is good for an hour or so.

If your wife is an HGTV-y type, a walk around hyper gentrified Westside neighborhood might be fun, plus there are a few unique eateries in the area.

I love the Thomas Hart Benton home / museum but if you aren't into his art, you should skip it. (plus there are lots of  his paintings at the Nelson - Atkins).

Union Station / Liberty Memorial never gets old for me. I could just stare at the ceilings in Union Station all day. Agree with others that the new streetcar is great.

Yeah, while at the WWI museum def have to go outside to catch the view of downtown.

Even if you don't stay out too late Green Lady is a great jazz bar.

Negro Leagues Museum is also a great place to go to.

I'd add in Negro League Baseball museum.  River market is cool to explore on weekends.  Plaza just because.

any specific type of food?  Some good different spots from bbq are like La Bodega or extra virgin, Lidia's, novel, le fou frog, or Fox and Pearl for a nicer meal, something like Grand Street or Classic Cup for a breakfast/lunch and I'll always plug Ponaks for the margaritas and tex mex but that's not universally loved.

If you don't want to spend $300 for a meal, ignore all of those places Phil just said.

My favorite places are Grinders, Margaritas (downtown spot), Beer Kitchen (fantastic food! My favorite burger in town), Q39 for fancy bbq, but Joe's KC is still better to me, Garazzos, and Pigwich.

Do the river market some morning. Roof top drinks at prime social is good for about 1 or 2 drinks. Great views. Also, look into blvd brewery tour if you can.

I wouldn't rank margarita's margaritas in the top 10 of KC margaritas ranking per Phil.
