I'm going to take a wait and see. I remember when Oscar was fired from Illinois the thought crossed my mind we might hire the loser. Imagine my delight when it came to pass.

My excitement level is less than it would have been a few years ago when we should have hired Brad. But "less" is not "none."

I'm glad there is a search firm involved, but I just wonder if Gene will use them.  No one on earth can convince me that the search firm just coincidentally came up with the name Chris Kleinman and it just happened to be Gene's old buddy from North Dakota.  I'm fine with Kleinman, too, but we did we need to pay a big chunk of money to a firm just rubber stamp it?  I suppose they probably did some background checks and asked a few questions about coeds and stuff.  Oh well.

CK wasn’t even the first choice (although in hindsight, the initial choice of LittreLL isn’t exactly a shining endorsement either).

Knowing absolutely nothing about the process, my hope is that these search firms are mainly used for diligence like you’re suggesting, and to come up with a list of lesser known up and comers in the event the primary targets fall through.

Kleiman is fine I guess, but a hint of marketing around helping Gene Taylor find Chris Klieman is very    Then knowing they got paid to help Gene hire his BFF.

That's going to sit at position 5 of my all time WTF K-State Athletic expenditures, ranked as follows:

1.   The Ron Prince Cocktail Napkin
2.   The Snyder Reti-A-Fire payments (plural)
3.   K-State Athletics paying then sitting Vice President of Institutional Advancement Bob Krause's LLC over $300K dollars to do "extra" work on behalf K-State Athletics
4.   The $250K personal loan to Tim Weiser
5.   Gene Taylor hiring a search firm and then hiring BFF Chris Klieman

It was discovered later that the LittreLL rumors were largely planted by his agent. He didn't progress any further than Neil Brown and Mike Norvell.

And yeah, search firms are there mainly for background and administrative needs, not for actually making hires. I've posted this before but here is a podcast with Bob Bowlsby's son who runs a search firm.
