Possible WW3 thread
« Reply #1425 on: March 05, 2022, 06:21:16 AM »
This opinion piece takes on the arm chair NeoCon narrative that Putin wants the USSR back.   The US has been priming the pump for this war for over a decade and was never serious about diplomacy.

https://www.msnbc.com/opinion/msnbc-opinion/russia-s-ukraine-invasion-may-have-been-preventable-n1290831

“Many of these analysts argue that the U.S. erred in its efforts to prevent the breakout of war by refusing to offer to retract support for Ukraine to one day join NATO or substantially reconsider its terms of entry. And they argue that Russia’s willingness to go to war over Ukraine’s NATO status, which it perceived as an existential national security threat and listed as a fundamental part of its rationale for the invasion, was so clear for so long that dropping support for its eventual entry could have averted the invasion”.

“The fact that the NATO status question was not put on the table as Putin signaled that he was serious about an invasion — so plainly that the U.S. government was spelling it out with day-by-day updates — was an error, and potentially a catastrophic one. It may sound cruel to suggest that Ukraine could be barred, either temporarily or permanently, from entering a military alliance it wants to be in. But what’s more cruel is that Ukrainians might be paying with their lives for the United States’ reckless flirtation with Ukraine as a future NATO member without ever committing to its defense”.

McCainiac driven foreign policy aside (even though he’s now beloved by #blueanonNeoCon), this is a tough one for #blueanon because it seems that Clinton may have been the original post election flexibility POTUS.   Obama just copied.

Post election Clinton did bomb the bejezus out of a Russian client state in violation of the NATO charter tho, so strong NeoCon points for that.  That process ultimately lead to the expansion of NATO.

Good thing a Dork Vindman type wasn’t listening in on the call.

Putin has obviously done everything he can not to invade Ukraine, but he literally has no other choice when people are, you know, talking about NATO.

Yes, NATO hasn’t moved a foot closer to Russia since the end of the Cold War.  Very astute.

Meanwhile we’ve wrecked countries in the last 25 years over things like a leader embarrassing a French president and talking about, of all things, an African Union.

Wouldn’t be the first time the US has invaded over some mean things being said.

Apparently Brittany Griner is caught up in Russia right now being charged with possession of THC oil.  Not a great time for that.

Well there isn’t really a compelling case made by the author for any of the claims in that tweet, I would like to read a more detailed critique if someone has one.

#neocon/#neoconGe in the midst of getting their rocks off over war and people dying (particularly Chief #neoconGe hardliner #slowdug) love to gang up on those that don’t carry their water.   It’s particularly sad when they start rolling out Brookings echo chamber.

In other news.   This is not verified but possibly some real adults and pros are working on this.  #neoconGe has a real kinship with some of the replies.   Loving the sanction everybody mentality of neocon nation.  Some real geniuses.

cire, you’re gonna fight to the bitter end for this purposeful diplomatic failure and crap show in Washington.

There’s no need to keep reminding us of that

LOL. Top 5 list of really stupid crap is “holding illegal drugs in countries that hate Americans and have almost zero rights for accused and infamously brutal prisons.”  That top 5 list also includes “Going to Baylor.”

Yeah, my impression was that he was definitely more interested in his own theory than anything else. (When I looked up his website and saw a painted portrait of himself, I was like, "okay, yeah, that totally makes sense.")

The interview is pretty absurd just on its face, though. It's like this:

Chotiner: So, Putin's army is literally in Ukraine, killing Ukrainians.
Mearsheimer: I don't think Putin really wants to invade Ukraine.
Chotiner: He says he wants to take back Russian land.
Mearsheimer: I don't think what he's doing counts as imperialism.

The West never trusted Putin from the beginning. Everything he's done since has proven that they were right not to trust him. I don't know why anyone would give him the benefit of the doubt on Ukraine. It's a lot like Trump in that the truth is pretty much always the opposite of what he says.
