It's a great propaganda war.  If you read Ukranian propaganda they shoot down every missile, every Russian airplane and they're absolutely kicking every ass in this war . . . they just need (yet) another $100 billion dollars in weapons and ammo

I think that it is/was a transportation hub for that region making it strategically important.

It can also be true that the complete destruction of the city has rendered it strategically marginal.
