is pushing the runner something that used to be illegal or did teams just figure out that it was advantageous like 5-10 years ago?

No. Pulling a runner forward is illegal.

Yes, it was illegal. In 2005 USC pushed Reggie Bush in the end zone for a last second touchdown that wasn't called. At the time the rule outlawed pushing or pulling a teammate but it was hardly called. It was either that off season or the one after that pushing a teammate was removed from the rule therefore permitted.

I kind of like the old way better.  It was legal to push the tacklers but not the runner so there was a gray area where you could nudge the runner some instead of these full-on rugby scrums we get now.

I like the rugby scrums. Some team like Nebraska or Iowa should specialize in them. Like, just have 8 or 9 huge, strong dudes in and push the pile forward five yards every play.

You could design plays for it. Running back runs straight into the backs of olinemen while other blockers come running in from all directions to push from behind. All game long.

You'd have an advantage because you practice rugby scrum every week and your opponent does not.

The defense begins to counter by having guys lie down on the road to trip everyone.
