RIP Billy Tubbs
« on: November 02, 2020, 05:33:06 AM »
https://www.yahoo.com/sports/oklahoma-coach-billy-tubbs-dies-cancer-battle-final-four-tcu-lamar-sooners-223628018.html

His story goes back a long time, but may be best remembered as the OU coach that coached the 1988 team that played KU for the national championship.  Always wore double-breasted suits, and had a way to connect to players from a lower income demographic--I think he grew up poor himself.  Made him a fantastic recruiter.

Did we have any coaches outside of Tom Asbury that regularly wore double-breasted suits?

I grew up on Billy Tubbs basketball, he remains my favorite coach of all time. I love that man, outside of my father, he may be the biggest influence on me being a huge sports fan.

He had an incredible relationship with Norm Stewart. When Billy was hit by a car while jogging, Norm said he wished the car backed up and finished him off.

Those old Big 8 coaches added to the rivalry and the excitement during basketball season. None were “better” for Big 8 basketball than Billy.
If there was a gif of nicname thwarting the attempted-flag-taker and then gesturing him to suck it, followed by motioning for all of Hilton Shelter to boo him louder, it'd be better than that auburn gif.

Loved me some Billy Ball. Grew up an OU fan. Didn't really go all-in on KSU until I was on campus in Fall 1989.

My dad hated Tubbs so I did too. Only thing I remember about him was some game against the cats where he sent in two enforcers that got technicals and then got another one himself arguing about it.

OU has always been the conference program I hate.

I first saw a Billy Tubbs coached OU team lose to a very mediocre KU basketball team in AFH in front of about 7K people.

Wichita/Western KS has a surprising number of T-Shirt Boomer fans. I even have a western KS cousin who is named after an OU football player from the 70's  :dunno:

It isn't that surprising if you consider a lot of southern Kansas is closer to Norman than Manhattan and then factor in the level of success of each football program prior to Snyder. (Or even during and after Snyder).

That's exactly what it was.  Growing up in southern Kansas in the 80's there were a few KU and KState fans because of basketball but as usual football was king so a lot of us were OU fans.  I started following OU football in roughly 1984 and then they won a Natty in '85 so that solidified me as a hardcore little kid t shirt fan for almost the next decade.

My parents moved me in '87. I spent a couple of hours last week sending my mother old Oklahoma City commercials like BC Clark, Paul Meade Insurance, Braum's with Earnest, and Linda Soundtrack.

BTW I went to the same church as the babysitter in Borat.

That is a blast from the past. Spammed the Wichita area also.

Middle school me will never forgive him for losing to Danny and the Miracles in the championship game.

My favorite Tubbs memory: after a 62-61 win quote headline in the Collegian: "I don't give a crap how good they are. We're going to beat the hell out of them in Norman."

Result in Norman: 67-63 Cats.
