i could read delusional jared stories for the rest of my life.

Very much reminds me of Jared's brother's buds that I worked with. Harvard, privileged backgrounds. Absolute confidence that they could handle anything that anyone had ever done before because they were at least as smart as anyone who'd ever done it before (but probably smarter and could do it better). This was also when tech startups were all the rage. Breaking, disrupting, etc. So, that totally just fed right into their unconditional confidence in their own abilities.

LOL the NYT story in there

Quote
The culture clash between public and private sectors has been jarring. The senior official described the Kushner team as a “frat party” that descended from a U.F.O. and invaded the federal government. To government officials, the outsiders demonstrated a lax attitude to policy discussions, at one point using the website FreeConferenceCall.com to arrange high-level meetings.

Dang you nailed it.

Also reminds me of Elon Musk saying he can easily build ventilators

Well, I was told yesterday that if those are different at all, the home use ones are probably more complicated.

Really wasn't wanting to kick ass in this thread cause this is supposed to be about what an idiot Kushner is, but whatev.

1. I don't think Musk deserves much grief for offering to donate ventilators that are not rated for continuous life-sustaining support.  If they were used for COVID it would be purely as a stop gap measure.  I mean how can we have commentators decrying Musk's effort but celebrating this monstrosity: https://www.texasmonthly.com/news/rice-engineers-ventilator-shortage-coronavirus/

2. https://aeroflowinc.com/need-ventilator-instead-bipap-cpap/

CPAPs are most commonly used for obstructive sleep apnea treatment. Pressurized air is forced down the airway to keep the airway open and free from obstruction. This prevents sleep apnea from occurring.

Quote
BiPAP is a more complex type of sleep therapy machine that is used when CPAP can not be tolerated, the airway can not open adequately with a CPAP, or when a patient has central sleep apnea.

There is a common misconception that ventilators are large pieces of equipment for bed-bound patients. However, there are options like the Trilogy Ventilator or Astral,  that are small and mobile. By only weighing 11 pounds with a compact design patients are still able to maintain their freedom.

Quote
What is a trilogy device?
A trilogy machine is one that is also a ventilator. This ventilator helps to treat respiratory infections or respiratory diseases where a person needs assistance because they can not breathe on their own.
What is the difference between a trilogy and a BiPAP?
The trilogy can deliver either BiPAP or CPAP ventilation. BiPAP ventilation is when there are two pressure levels to the ventilation. The trilogy machine works on CPAP.
What is the difference between BiPAP and CPAP?
BiPAP and CPAP are both different modes of ventilation. CPAP is a continuous level of ventilation. BiPAP is used when there are two pressure levels. This is for people who need positive air pressure.

Anything Elon Musk does to help out is a bonus.  The fact that he is catching crap for doing *something* speaks to how inadequate our government response has been

The point is Musk said he could easily build ventilators for hospitals, got some good press that he was supplying 1000, but the stories didn't actually acknowledge that he bought them or that they weren't certified for hospital use. Good on him for donating, but he can eff off for tricking people into thinking he built them.

And that senior design project at Rice shouldn't be celebrated, either. It's another example of young people who went to elite or semi-elite schools thinking they're smarter than the entire medical device industry who gee whiz never thought that a low price ventilator would be good for business.

Those machines increase the spread of the virus by aerosolizing it and they are not adequate for patients that need the more invasive hospital-grade ventilator, anyway.

Not to make this into a Musk thread, but as a resident Tesla owner, his whole schtick this entire pandemic is just frustrating bordering on being opening angry at him. He pretty much trump'd it as the beginning (I actually mean that seriously, to me Elon is very much like trump at least ego wise, he's just obviously actually smarter, just not as smart as he thinks he is) calling it everything from the hysteria was too much, to claiming that kids were "essentially immune" to this crap promising he can build ventilators, when in the end they are CPAP machine that he clearly bought passing them off as Tesla built.

Just like trump he has an absolute sheep-like following that sees he can do no wrong, and opposition that sees wrong in everything he does. He makes wild ass claims (we can build 1000 ventilators in a week, when Ford/GM can't do that for weeks, cave submarine idea) /deadlines (Model 3 timeline) on things with very little blow back for when he's shown wrong or missed the deadlines. He's dealt in some pretty shady ethical practices both before this crisis (funding secured/the SEC removing from being the chair of Tesla, calling the cave guy a pedo) and ever since it started (easiest of this being trying to keep the factory open claiming it was an essential business), treats many employees and subordinates like crap. Also, Tesla as a company consistently struggles to turn profits yet until this whole crisis happened was magically worth more than Ford or GM, who sells orders of magnitudes of cars more than Tesla, but yet "cause Elon's awesome" it gets valued way more.

Yet, I want his overall mission to getting to sustainable transport and a less emissions to happen. Quite the pickle honestly. Like the idea, worried about the methods of implementation, and definitely a compromised individual with a giant outsized ego who often thinks he's literally the smartest person in the room, yet doesn't realize that he doesn't know everything about everything, and if you cross him he'll find ways to send his hoards of rabid followers to slam you on twitter.

read the NYT Kushner article - this post fits in here! It's about the problem of false confidence in your abilities and dismissal of people who know what they're doing.

Agree that he sucks, but he can't be expected to be any part of a realistic solution.  I just don't have the energy to be outraged about his expected fuckery.  I honestly don't think that he's making the problem worse by donating problematic machines as they'll get shoved in a storage container by the knowledgeable people.

This.  The government's expected fuckery at the hands of these billionaire grifters is where I channel my outrage.

I mean it's all the same problem, I have plenty of energy to be pissed at the government (and public) reaction to the billionaire grifters but also be pissed at the billionaire grifters for trying the grift

This more succinctly puts where I'm at. Lots of opportunists and grifters both private and public (and often enabled because of this admin) and it's just frustrating to watch actual experts have to deal with the dumbassery of the rich and powerful.

I'll have to read it, I got a lot of that kinda info from the new season of Dirty Money, so I expect it's a lot of the same high handedness just instead of just screwing over tenants it's the entire country.

President Xi and the Bank of China are getting a little upset about the lack of return phone calls of late from the Biden's.   They'll be requesting documentation on how the BoC's investment(s) in the Biden's are performing during these troubling times.

https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/495212-kushner-predicts-much-of-the-country-will-be-back-to-normal-in-june

Quote

White House senior adviser Jared Kushner on Wednesday expressed optimism that much of the country could be "back to normal" by June as several states prepare to lift restrictions meant to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

"I think what you’ll see in May as the states are reopening now is May will be a transition month, you’ll see a lot of states starting to phase in the different reopening based on the safety guidelines that President Trump outlined on April 19," Kushner said on "Fox & Friends."

"I think you’ll see by June that a lot of the country should be back to normal, and the hope is that by July the country’s really rocking again," the president's son-in-law continued.
