working from home 101
« on: March 12, 2020, 02:22:30 PM »
WFH veterans post pro tips itt

how do you stay focused?
is it ethical to take a long break for a bike ride or a siesta or book or whatever leisure activity?
how do you avoid eating the entire time?
should you put on "real" clothes to get in the right "mindset"?
modelo season opens in about 9 days; what time does 5pm roll around when W'ingFH?
do you find yourself actually being more productive / efficient with your time?
is it frowned upon to call a coworker on the phone if you need to actually talk through something?

I prefer to go to the library because I don't get crap done at home. Doesn't really work if you're wanting to quarantine

how do you stay focused?

I try and set daily goals for myself

is it ethical to take a long break for a bike ride or a siesta or book or whatever leisure activity?

I usually go swim laps around 9 or 10 and give the dog a walk around 1 or 2. You need it for sanity purposes.

how do you avoid eating the entire time?

PLan your meals and stay active. See above. Protein bar in the morning. Make a salad or wrap for lunch. Make sure you have healthish snacks in case you need something around 3.

should you put on "real" clothes to get in the right "mindset"?

I wear K-State sweatpants everyday. I got 5 pairs for Christmas. The joke was "work clothes"

modelo season opens in about 9 days; what time does 5pm roll around when W'ingFH?

I don't usually drink unless it's a Friday lunch and then it's fair game with the wife. Shoot for 5 on other days I want a cocktail.

do you find yourself actually being more productive / efficient with your time?

Yes. Nobody bothers me. I've had a lot of success doing this, this past year. Anxiety has went down a TON!

is it frowned upon to call a coworker on the phone if you need to actually talk through something?

Nah. It's nice sometimes. You'll probably find yourself talking too long because you miss the interaction from time to time

Zoom calls with the execs. Throw on some shorts, throw on a button up, and throw some water on your hair.

This is what they see on the calls. Gotta look professional and like I’m ready to go somewhere for them.

how do you stay focused? I naturally hate to have anything on my to do list so I just do all of it really fast and then just field calls and questions and eff off all day.
is it ethical to take a long break for a bike ride or a siesta or book or whatever leisure activity? yes, this is fine. when really hungover I'll just crank the volume on my laptop IM/email tone and rest my eyes on my bed all day. Or, just go to the bar in the afternoon with the work bros and get hammered with our laptops and phones and do important business drinking
how do you avoid eating the entire time? drink a lot of coffee. routine is good. I have a set time that my body is used to where I get coffee 1 and 2, lunch break, etc. You'll just adjust to it.
should you put on "real" clothes to get in the right "mindset"? No, this is stupid
modelo season opens in about 9 days; what time does 5pm roll around when W'ingFH? Just whenever
do you find yourself actually being more productive / efficient with your time? Yes
is it frowned upon to call a coworker on the phone if you need to actually talk through something? why would it be? I'm confused by this.

make sure you have a designated office space. If you have an actual home office perfect. if you have a spare room turn it into the office. get it set up like an actual office and not just a desk. that's another tip.

Yeah, the basement is a lot of fun, but I could see it as a concern for some. I have a putting course, PS4, etc. I'm usually pretty good at avoiding it most of the time.

I have a legit setup in my home office so I am extremely productive when I work from home. I also can play music out loud which helps me be ever more productive.

kind of like when puni said it was an extreme faux pas if you try to go talk to a coworker during J-nap time.
i suppose the quarantine situation makes it different. if i was WFH like on a normal sick day i would be annoyed if someone called me for a stupid question that could have been handled via email

a lot of my people will IM me asking if I'm free to chat before calling me. others will just call me. I'm fine with whichever.

Plan a little bit to keep from eating all day.

No need to get real life dressed but I like to shower everyday. Don’t get gross.

Agree with SD that the best plan is to knock everything out immediately and the deal with whatever comes up. You can then eff around large portions of the day with a clear conscience.

Also, keep a tight calendar and check it every morning. I had a million reminders in an office and was always there so it wasn’t a big deal to me but had to tighten that up at home.

We got an email last night saying that starting next week we have the OPTION to work from home. Many of us already work from home when there’s a good reason like kids being sick or have a dr appointment or whatever. Had a follow up conference call encouraging us to continue focusing on meeting client expectations.

Folks have not been very inspired by leadership so far.

I should add that most of the people I work with are very smart and recognize the virus is probably already a widespread outbreak and that school, daycare, and other closures are imminent.

The company strategy so far seems to be we’re gonna do our best to work around this and hope it doesn’t get too bad.
